Village, vineyards and forest of Rilly-la-Montagne

Everythird weekend in July, Les Secrets du Petit Bonhomme are given a new twist, allowing you to explore the village of Rilly-la-Montagne via the existingPR79 trail with a few variations. Interesting viewpoints, a link between the forest, the village and the vineyards, and features related to the village’s floral displays.
Route available all year round, except in the forest during the hunting season.

Description of the walk

Park near the Espace Culturel on Rue Carnot.

(S/E) Head west towards the station. Before turning right into Rue Gambetta, look out for Le Petit Bonhomme on the left, the village’s emblem. Walk down Rue Gambetta to the right and join thePR79, marked with a yellow line on a grey background. Turn left towards the railway bridge and follow the signposted route to reach thefirst viewpoint, following the additional signposts.

(1) Follow the marked route again to the picnic area, then turn right and, at the fork, turn left to reach another viewpoint overlooking the village.

(2) Join thePR79 route to reach Le Pressoir; read about the history of the flower displays here and enjoy the view of the station.

(3) Cross the main road to take the Chemin de la Forêt. Continue to follow thePR79 to reach the car park at the top of the village and find the La Godasse viewpoint.

(4) Walk down Rue du Pavé, which turns right, then, opposite, take the small Rue du Gué and continue along the footpath to the secondary school, then veer slightly right towards Les Rozais. Walk alongside the former property of Mrs Ppmmery, with views of the outbuildings, the chapel and some superb trees, before reaching a new viewpoint.

(5) Walk down Chemin des Wardes and cross the D26 to continue straight ahead onto the first path on the left. Continue until the second turn-off on the left, then follow this path to the cross, turn right onto Rue Kellermann – be careful, it is a narrow street. Enjoy the view of the Château Park.

(6) Turn left, continue to the end of the street, then turn left to walk up Rue de Reims to the church.

(7) Take Rue Carnot opposite to reach the car park, near the Cultural Centre and the War Memorial (S/E).

We are a small group of walkers based in the Paris region and were staying in Reims; we made our way to the charming station at Rilly-la-Montagne to take the walk through vineyards and woodland (the paths were a bit muddy), unfortunately in weather that wavered between fog and drizzle. A lovely walk ending with a stroll through the beautiful village of Rilly-la-Montagne. We made the most of the welcome picnic spots.

A lovely, easy walk with a straightforward circular route around the village. The castle grounds are currently under renovation, but the walk through the vineyards and woods is lovely

We didn't see anyone, but we were there during the week, so we thought that was to be expected.
Best regards!!!

Hello,

You’re right, you do need to check the hunting days. Last year, it was on Saturdays, but they often finish by late morning.
