Tour of the Chamery cirque and the Bois d’Écueil

A series of successive steps – sometimes steep but short, separated by less steep sections – will take you to the summit plateau of this part of the Montagne de Reims. After crossing a mix of wide, stony paths and other wilder, sometimes damp sections, you’ll circle the Bois d’Écueil before reaching the paragliding area, then head back down to the starting village to complete your tour of the Chamery cirque.

Description of the walk

Park at the top of Rue Haute, along the pavement by the last houses in Chamery. If there really is no space, you can park in the village centre in the car park on Place du Jard, next to the tennis court.

(S/E) Leave Rue Haute and take the Chemin des Vaches to reach the junction with a vineyard track.

(1) Turn right onto this track and follow it to the junction withthe GR®142.

(2) Turn left onto theGR® and, winding your way through the vineyards, gradually climb from one ledge to the next until you reach the edge of the forest.

(3) Walk uphill through the forest for about a hundred metres before taking the path on the right – this is still theGR® – until you reach the edge of the woodland.

(4) Leave theGR® here and take the path on the left, following the edge of the woodland until you reach a four-way junction further on at the top.

(5) Turn left to enter the woods and follow a very wide grassy path, avoiding any puddles if the weather has been wet. You’ll emerge onto a wide stony track.

(6) Follow it; further on, after a bend to the left, cross the Ruisseau des Grandes Fontaines. Turn at right angles twicefirst to the left, then to the right – before reaching the junction withthe GRP® de l’Ardre.

(7) Turn left onto the forest track marked with red and yellowGRP® signposts, and quickly pass the Écueil farm. You will reach the junction leading to the paragliding launch site.

(8) Turn right onto the track, follow the edge of the forest, then enter it and soon turn left to reach the launch site. Then begin the descent to reach a T-junction in the woods.

(9) Turn left and take the descending path, leaving the woods to find yourself in the middle of the vineyards on a wide track. Follow this track to rejoin theGR®142.

(10) Turn left onto it, then leave it at the next junction to continue straight ahead, eventually returning to the initial junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Turn right to return to the car park you chose at the start (S/E).

Notes

Some paths are damp in wet weather and, although you can easily take a detour along the sides, make sure you wear suitable footwear.
Watch out for ticks and mosquitoes once the warmer weather returns.
The route can easily be walked in either direction, as the climb up to the plateau is gradual whichever way you choose.

Worth a visit

Shortly afterwards (8), you’ll see the cross commemorating the children of Chamery who died for France.
Between (8) and (9) lies the Chamery paragliding site; to reach it, take a path on the left leading to the site where, if the wind is blowing in the right direction and isn’t too strong, you might be lucky enough to see paragliders taking off.
The views over the natural cirque surrounding the village of Chamery.
The surrounding Champagne houses.
The lovely hotel-restaurant in Sacy.

A superb route through vineyards and woods!
Some sections are quite muddy: nothing out of the ordinary at this time of year.
Some steep climbs in various places.

A very pleasant walk through vineyards and woodland with some lovely views from higher ground.....I did find the long, straight stretches along a wide path between points 6 and 7 a bit of a let-down, but that’s just my personal preference – I prefer narrow paths deep in the forest.......I was also lucky enough, on arriving at the paragliding launch site, to find several paragliders just about to take off..... I had a lovely time with them and managed to take some brilliant photos......

A walk through woodland and vineyards with lovely views over the vineyards.
Good descriptions; I would point out, however, that at point 7, the junction with the GRP isn’t very visible. It’s a path you need to take, which then turns into a track. I ‘missed’ it and had to turn back after realising my mistake a few hundred metres further on.
