Description of the walk

The route starts from the Hautvillers picnic area, located behind Hautvillers Abbey, next to the tennis courts. There is a panoramic view of the valley.

Red and white GR® markings

(S/E) Take the GR®14 (red and white markings) between the picnic area and the tennis courts, heading north then west. It first crosses the vineyards and arrives in front of the Croix Bidet.

(1) Continue and go round the Bois de Saint-Marc without entering it.

(2) When you reach a left-hand bend, follow the edge of the woods for another 25 m and continue along the path which now crosses the vineyard. Pass a junction, then take the path on the right, following the contour lines. At the T-junction, turn left and walk 100 m to a hairpin bend.

No signposting

(3) Turn right, then straight on. Do not go down towards Damery. This is where you leave theGR®14. The path crosses the vineyard and reaches a wood on the right-hand side. Follow the edge of the wood for 50 m and look out for a junction.

(4) At the junction, turn right and enter the woodland. Continue without changing direction for 2 km. You’ll reach the vineyards, then a small road and the Romery picnic area.

(5) Continue along the Route de Damery (D322) on the right. Then turn right onto the Route d’Hautvillers, walking carefully along the edge of the road. Pass a reservoir. The road climbs through vineyards, then through woods. At the large bend, continue straight ahead and leave the road. Keep going straight on. After more than 2 km, the path descends, runs alongside a vineyard and reaches the road (D386).

(6) Turn right and walk alongside the road. At the bend, continue straight ahead. Walk alongside the abbey wall to the picnic area (S/E).

A lovely, varied walk through vineyards and woodland, with superb views of the Marne Valley and the surrounding countryside. At some junctions, there are occasionally no signs indicating the route ahead, so using GPS is helpful. The forest track is rutted and muddy in places, but these sections can be bypassed without too much difficulty.

Thank you for your review.

Hautvillers has become very touristy. If you want to visit at a leisurely pace, it’s best to avoid summer weekends.

That’s the ‘UNESCO listing’ effect

Lots of ruts and slush between (4) and (5), but a pleasant walk.

A brilliant route with lovely views over the Marne Valley. The section through the woods was particularly pleasant in the bright sunshine. Despite the lack of rain over the last few days, there were a few muddy patches, but these were easy to get around. There’s a bit of road at the start and near Romery, but very, very little traffic.
A very quiet path, which is easy to follow using the Visorando app.

A very pleasant route of moderate difficulty.
Signposting is rather poor, difficult to spot without GPS.
That’s the only downside to this hike. The location is exceptional!

Hello

Indeed.

Hello @Virgule, you can also combine the two routes by taking the one from Damery to Romery, then, once you reach the end of the route in Damery, heading back up that route to join the one that goes to Hautvillers; I think that would make for a lovely circular route worth trying

A lovely route, featuring some steep but short climbs that come one after another towards the end. There were a few places where we missed some signposts, particularly near Damery at a crossroads, but nothing serious – we quickly found the trail again. Part of the route from Damery to Romery takes you through the woods; there’s always the same logging area which gets tricky – you have to veer off the track by 10–20 metres – but as we’d been there before, we knew what to do. It’s a lovely route and well worth doing.

Hello
We found this route very enjoyable, with lovely vineyard scenery and pleasant forest paths.
The only downside was that some sections were completely rutted and very muddy.
The Visiorando app is essential for following the route.

Hello,

You can extend this route to 15 km by heading down towards Damery and following the banks of the Marne as far as Cumières. From Cumières, head back up towards Hautvillers, following the signposts.
