The memorial to the 37 brave soldiers of the 60th Infantry Regiment

This route is not strictly speaking a hike; it simply takes you to the monument, which is situated deep in the woods and very difficult to find. Use of the app is strongly recommended, as the stele is off the path and not very visible.

This memorial is likely on private land. Please respect the site.

It will be of interest to enthusiasts of the First World War.

Description of the walk

The start is on the heights of Champillon, at the end of Allée des Pins, where there is space to park one or two cars.

(S/E) The path starts at the edge of the woods, after the last house, on the right. It is marked by yellow signs indicating several hiking routes. Follow the sign towards Mutigny. After 50 m in the woods, turn left and continue straight on.

(1) When you reach the small road, near La Malmaison (a small castle), cross over and head straight ahead, behind the large pile of gravel. Walk 300 m and turn right, staying on the wide path. Continue for 150 m to the next crossroads.

(2) Look out for the entrance to the path on the left, marked by a badly damaged sign. The path is completely blocked by a fallen tree, which you must go round. N.B. Do not take the pretty tree-lined path; it does not lead to the memorial. Walk 250 m along the path and look out for a huge chestnut tree in the middle of the woods. The memorial is a few metres off the path, on the right. It is not very visible.

(3) Then return to the starting point via the same route (S/E).

Notes

I went back there again on Sunday, walking from Rilly-la-Montagne to Ay – it was almost on my way. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the fallen tree had been partially cleared away, and that there’s a small white sign pointing to the memorial. I think it will be much easier to find now.

However, don’t expect to be able to get there from the other side – the path isn’t cleared at all.

Hello,

I went back there today and put a warning tape on a tree at the spot where you need to turn right off the path to get to the memorial.

While looking for the big chestnut tree that I couldn’t see, I missed the monument.
After turning back, I eventually spotted the monument, which was quite visible from the path.
Indeed, a sign on the path near the monument would be very useful.

Thank you for this feedback. If I go back there, I’ll tie a ribbon to a tree near the memorial.

The sign has been cleaned recently.

Hello
I’d already seen the sign for the monument but hadn’t found the memorial stone.
Thanks to the map, I was able to find it, but it wasn’t easy as the final path isn’t maintained. Nor is the stele, for that matter.
I’ve posted a message with a photo on the Parc de la Montagne de Reims Facebook page
Have a good day

Hello,

I bumped into a hiker today, map in hand, heading for the memorial. I hope she found it.

The sign has been cleaned by volunteers – thank you to them.
