A beautiful hike along an oldPR® trail, which is unfortunately no longer well marked. The return journey is on gentler slopes than the outward journey. The end of the route crosses the vineyards of Irouleguy.

Le Larla, 705 m, is a magnificent viewpoint over the mountains surrounding Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry, Saint-Jean-Pie-de-Port and the entire eastern face of Iparla with its majestic ridge.

Another way to climb La Rhune. You won't have to contend with the crowds on the more popular trails. Here, there are very few people, except for the locals.

Far to the north, Mount Ursuya offers magnificent views of the Basque and Béarn mountains, the plain and the valleys of Piedmont.

Atxuria or Peña Plata is a beautiful peak with 100-metre cliffs on its southern face. Magnificent views of the Spanish mountains and the northern plains. There are numerous caves at its base. The most famous are those of Sare and Zugarramurdi, which were inhabited in the Palaeolithic era.

A lovely walk that takes you through a variety of landscapes, including open tracks, forest, pastures and, finally, vineyards.

The Muhnoa is a magnificent 360° viewpoint. Most of the climb is on a gentle slope of about 10%. The last 1,400 metres become more difficult, but the reward is at the end.

This is a beautiful walk. It crosses the largest beech forest in Europe. From the summit of Occabé, the highest point in the Iraty Forest, the view is magnificent. Below, there is a large necropolis of Neolithic shepherds. It has around twenty well-preserved cromlechs. They date back to 1000 BC and are a kind of circle in the middle of which the ashes of the dead were placed.

An easy and very pleasant walk, ideal if the weather prevents you from going to the high mountains.

The climb to the Larribet refuge is a pleasant hike. The first part of the route is marked by pastoralism, as evidenced by the numerous rock shelters (toues). From the refuge, there is a magnificent view of the Balaïtous and Palas mountains. In 45 minutes, it is possible to continue along the path to the Batcrabère lakes.

From the start, there is a superb panorama of the surrounding mountains. The view of the widening lake is splendid.

One of the most beautiful panoramas in the Cauterets region. Accessible without any particular difficulty. 360° view of the highest peaks in the central Pyrenees.

La Rhune in a wide loop below Miramar. A little-used path to the Col des Trois Fontaines. A little longer, but easy and with much better views.

This round trip hike requires a fairly good level of fitness. Long distance and steep gradient. Returning via Lake Artouste greatly reduces the difficulty. This hike is magnificent. Throughout the climb, you will have the high peaks in your sights. The trails are varied: you will cross forests, summer pastures with herds of cattle, streams and, early in the morning, you may even see some izards (a type of wild goat).

This is a fairly challenging hike in terms of elevation gain, but offers varied landscapes. This little-visited lake is a haven of peace and ideal for a picnic with family or friends.

This is a short hike with little elevation gain and no difficulty in clear weather. The view from the ridges of all the surrounding peaks and villages is magnificent all along the way. From the Gros huts, the return trip along the trail is very easy.

This hike starts in one of the most beautiful villages in the Basque Country. The route takes you up a series of climbs to the Col des Trois Croix. From there, you climb to the summit of Errebi. The view stretches from the ocean to the mountains of Labourd.

An easy walk offering superb panoramic views from the Organbidexka ridge, stretching from the Pic d’Orhy to the peaks of Béarn via the Pic d’Anie.

A little extra tip for this hike to Gorospil, which is already listed on Visorando. Of course, the views from the Haizagerri ridge are magnificent, but for food lovers, extending the walk to Esteben Borda to enjoy some delicious dishes or simply have a drink makes it even more appealing. Give them a ring the day before to check, as contrary to what’s stated on their website, it’s not open every day in the low season.

This is a very beautiful hike which, once you reach the ridge between Arthanolatze and Pic des Escaliers, offers superb views of the Pyrenees on one side and the Arbailles forest and the landscapes stretching from Mauléon to Oloron and beyond on the other.

The D428 alone offers wonderful scenery. Unless you make frequent stops, you won't be able to enjoy it much as it's best to keep your eyes on the road. The Urculu offers different scenery along this route as you pass through plateaus with magnificent views of the surrounding area and the Basque and Béarn mountains.

This hike has a moderate elevation gain but is a bit long. The Pic d'Escurets is a magnificent viewpoint. From the summit, you can see the towns of Pau, Tarbes and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. And many peaks such as the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2,872 m), the Balaitous, the Palas, the Lurien, the Gabizos massif, the Pic du Ger and many others. On the way down, the view of Benou is absolutely beautiful.

Mailh Massibé is a magnificent vantage point offering views stretching from the Pic du Midi de Bigorre to the Atlantic, taking in all the peaks of Béarn and the Basque Country. Although the approach to this summit is a little long, it is easy to reach and presents no particular difficulties in the absence of snow or fog.

This hike to Hautza via the Trempetta ridge is well worth the effort. There is a significant elevation gain, but you are guaranteed to be rewarded with spectacular views. The ridge offers breathtaking vistas that will quickly make you forget the difficulty of the hike. This hike climbs successively to several viewpoints. From the summit of Hautza, there is a 360° view of all the peaks of the Basque Country and, further away, the Pyrenean peaks.

Seen from a distance, the silhouette of Behorleguy gives the impression of an enormous peak and of being difficult. In fact, this is misleading and when you arrive on its southern face, it has a rather rounded shape. It is an enormous limestone fold that heralds the Arbailles massif. Magnificent view from the summit with the Pic des Escaliers to the south and the Arbailles massif to the north.. At the Col d'Aphanize, you can see a vertical chasm 500 m deep, one of the deepest chimneys in the world.

The Adi overlooks the Urepel valley and the Quinto Real, which belonged to the kings of Navarre. The inhabitants paid a grazing fee corresponding to one-fifth of the herds, the quint.Currently reduced to 2,000 ha on the French side, but belonging to Spain, only the families of Saint-Étienne de Baïgorry have use of it. Herd owners pay a grazing fee (vacade) for each animal. This is why a fence marks the boundary of the Quinto Real.

A magnificent circular hike that allows you to climb to a high altitude without too much difficulty and arrive at a refuge guarded by very friendly people. The return journey takes you along a path carved into the rock, offering splendid views.

A very beautiful hike, but one that has to be earned. There is a 1,000-metre elevation gain over a short distance. The variety of paths taken, including rivers, forests, mountainsides and lakes, will make you forget the difficulty. The view of the Bassiès massif on the way up and down is truly magnificent. The bonus: the welcome at the refuge is very warm. From the refuge, you can continue on to several other lakes, or enjoy the beautiful view of all the 3,000-metre peaks around Montcalm.

This hike is magnificent. The climb starts on a wide, open path and then continues through the forest. It continues through beautiful mountain pastures along the Neste de la Géla, where large herds graze peacefully. The view across the valley floor is spectacular. The end of the route on the balconies of the cirque at the foot of the cliff, which towers 500 metres above us, is just as magnificent. The arrival at the lake with its islets and jagged contours is a marvel.

This is a fairly short hike with a moderate elevation gain. It is still enjoyable and spectacular at the end. The Port de Bielsa is reminiscent of a miniature version of the Brèche de Roland (in the Pyrenees). It can be seen from several places along the road that takes you to the start. Once you reach the other side, the view of the valley and the Sierra Pelada is magnificent.

Lac de Houer is very quiet, as hikers prefer to head towards Lac de la Pombie from Cabane d'Araille. In summer, this walk allows you to admire the equally beautiful landscapes far from the crowds, surrounded by pastures and herds of cattle.

This is a short hike that is rarely done, seems unremarkable and does not appear in most guidebooks. However, it is well worth the effort and the lake is magnificent. Once it's time to go back, you'll want to stay longer. There are very few people, just a few hikers, a fisherman, some marmots and, very early in the morning, some chamois. For those who like camping, I would recommend pitching a tent here. A day and a night here is pure bliss!

This round trip hike is mostly in Spain and is suitable for all walkers. It is a very easy family walk. The green surroundings are home to marmots and chamois, if you know where to look. From the end of June onwards, numerous flocks of sheep, cows and horses graze here. The lake is splendid and is surrounded by white rock mountains on the left with the Aspe peak and the Visaurin and on the right by red rocks with the Gabedaille peak.

The aim here is to make a loop. You will need to climb down a small chimney and follow a path that runs along the cliff and takes you down a ladder. Magnificent view of the peaks and the valley below.

The Refuge d’Arlet is accessible from several locations. This hike, which is a little long and involves a significant elevation gain, is one of the most beautiful, alongside the Aubise route. The lake, dominated by the Pic d’Aillary and the Pic d’Arlet, is absolutely stunning. The herds grazing all around add a bucolic touch to the landscape. In 20 minutes, you can climb up to the Col d’Arlet.

Please note: access to the Pic du Midi is prohibited until 1 November 2024 by municipal decree The Pic du Midi de Bigorre is a classic in the Pyrenees. Apart from its length, this hike is very accessible. The approach via the Ruisseau d'Oncet is magnificent, where you will encounter marmots and llamas. Once you reach the summit, you'll be blown away by the view of all the legendary peaks, including Aneto, Vignemale, Balaïtous and the Néouvielle massif. Below, you can see Lac d'Oncet, which you passed on the way up.

BaÏgura is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the north of the Basque Country, with a 360° view of the mountains and the surrounding plain. Unfortunately, like many peaks, it is dotted with antennas, but they are very useful... It is a favourite spot for paragliders who jump from the top of the north face.

The climb to the Cirque de Barroude is after a passage through the forest along the Neste de la Géla in magnificent summer pastures. The arrival at the lakes via a bucolic path offers a splendid view of the cliffs that tower 500 metres above. The return via the Port de Barroude and then the ridges allows us to see the Spanish side and its Aragonese sierras.

A very beautiful hike which, initially through the woods with informative signs, allows you to cover the elevation gain without even noticing. Ideal for children. Then the Clarabide Gorges with the path carved into the rock are magnificent and the reward is not far away.I would like to point out that, having done this hike again, the altitude figures given by the Visorando software are incorrect. The elevation gain is around 550 m.

The three Consaterre Lakes, dominated by the Pics de Berdalade, de Thou and de la Haille, are truly beautiful. The scenery is magnificent and wild. Silence reigns supreme here, and given the steep climb, you won’t be disturbed too much.

Although less well known than their prestigious neighbours, the Néouvielle lakes are also magnificent. We can add Lac de l'Ours, which is accessible by footpaths. This short hike with little elevation gain is an invitation to stroll from lake to lake, especially if you add Lac de l'Ours to the route, going from the small lake before Lac de l'Île and back. In this case, add an extra hour. You are entering the Néouvielle National Nature Reserve, which is protected by regulations. Please respect these regulations (see practical information).

A very beautiful hike through the summer pastures of Aulon. Best done after the transhumance so you can enjoy the many herds of cows and sheep. You will pass by huts, walk along and cross streams, and walk through meadows full of flowers.

A very beautiful hike that is accessible to everyone. The descent into the steeply-sided Sarrouyes valley retains a wild appearance. The end of the climb is in the middle of a meadow, following the stream. You may see many marmots here.

Oilarandoi is a magnificent viewpoint overlooking all the surrounding peaks. The nearby Munhoa and, further away, Iparla, Autza, Adarza and many others. At the summit, there was originally a hermitage, which was occupied from 1706 to 1792. The ruins were rebuilt twice, in 1941 and 1985. This hike includes sections with significant gradients of between 30 and 40%, but the reward is at the end and the view from the summit is well worth the effort.

A very beautiful hike. The descent into the steep-sided Sarrouyes valley retains a wild aspect. The climb to Lac de Sarrouyes takes you through meadows, following the stream. You may see many marmots here. From the Lac de Sarrouyes junction, the climb to Lac des Miares becomes more challenging. Good physical condition is recommended. I would say it is difficult rather than very difficult, as recommended by Visorando.

The climb to Haltzamendi is a truly enjoyable hike. Without any particular difficulties, it offers varied landscapes. From the summit, a splendid viewpoint, we have a bird's eye view of the eastern ridges of Baïgura.

The Iramendy ridge is bristling with poudingue peaks (conglomerate of round pebbles). From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, this gives it the appearance of a dinosaur. Climbing to the summit via this ridge from north to south requires a bit of scrambling (level 2 lower). The proposed hike climbs to the summit via the other ridge. No difficulties other than the total elevation gain and a few steep sections. Magnificent 360° view of the surrounding mountains.
