The tour of Atxuria via the Venta Loretxoa

Several hikers have reported that the path after the Zugarramurdi caves is now blocked. I have modified the route (July 2023). From the centre, take the road that leads to the cemetery.

A superb hike that avoids the climb to the summit, which can be exhausting and difficult to find.
I have already posted this hike on Visorando.
You will walk along the magnificent and impressive cliffs of Atxuria. On this southern side, the hike, with less elevation gain and a few hundred metres more, becomes bucolic.

Description of the walk

From Sare, follow the signs for the Grottes de Sare. Park just before the caves, in the small car park on the right.

(S/E) Go through a gate and take the stairway on the right, marked with red and blue Venta Loretxoa signs. The start of the stairway is quite steep. At the end of the steps, it becomes less steep. When you reach a wooden barrier, turn right onto a stony path.

(1) Turn left and continue climbing. Ignore a path on your right and take the next one on your left.

(2) Turn left and join a track. Turn right and follow it to the next junction.

(3) Leave the yellow markings and continue straight ahead on a slight downhill slope. Turn right, then left. The path passes to the left of the Venta Loretxoa. A few metres from the path, it is worth stopping to admire the bucolic setting.

(4) Just above the signposts, take the path on the left that passes in front of a renovated barn. Continue climbing and you will come to a fork on the right. Continue straight ahead until you reach another fork on the right, on a grassy plateau.

(5) Follow the path opposite which, after a section along the contour line, climbs up to the left to join a fork just before the unnamed pass on the Atxuria ridge.

(6) Turn completely to the right. The path descends steeply to a fork with some large oak trees.
Turn left onto this path and descend to the Ibaineta Pass near a larch forest.

(7) Leave the well-marked paths on the left and right and follow a grassy path that goes straight ahead, skirting the larch trees on the right. Pass through a slightly marshy area. The path passes two fences with passages to cross them. Just after the second one, turn left. Reach an enclosure, go around it on the right and reach the Urbia Pass.

(8) Take the road on the left and head towards Zugarramurdi.

(9) Go back and take the road that leads to the cemetery until you reach the next junction.

(10) Follow the road that branches off to the right until you reach the next sharp bend.

(11) Take the road on the right. Further on, leave a road on your right and continue on the left. You will come to a small meadow.

(12) Follow the paved path that descends to the right towards the rock face and joins the Venta Halty.

(13) Do not go towards the venta but take a path that branches off to the left. An interesting feature along the way is a hole on the left, from which cool air flows from the depths of the earth. Very pleasant in hot weather. The path leads to a road and immediately turns off again. Follow it on the left-hand side until you reach the entrance to the quarry. Continue to the small car park at the Sarre Caves (S/E).

A superb circular offering magnificent scenery, particularly in the southern section. Only the last section on the road between Zugarramurdi and the Sarre caves is slightly less interesting. You can do the hike without stopping at the Venta Loretxea, but if you pass by at lunchtime, it would be a shame not to stop for a bite to eat.

A very beautiful hike done early in the morning. Departure from the caves at 8:15 a.m.
It's a shame that from the Urbia Pass onwards, you have to walk on a tarmac road.
Be careful, you can be misled when you reach the pass-like area at the end of the climb from point 4. You have to continue slightly to the left to finally reach point 5.
Furthermore, starting from point 5, I would say that the path is on a contour line, but rather descending.

We had done it before in reconnaissance and the passage was open. Too many tourists or others...

A very beautiful hike with varied landscapes.
When we arrived in Zugarramurdi, we found that the passage after the cave was closed, which meant we had to find our way back to the road at the top of the village to rejoin the trail.

Hello
For papoupasin, I redid the hike in reverse on Visorando with all the explanations. I then added it to my favourites with all the explanations. This was in autumn 2021. I have since deleted it. The best thing would be for you to send him a message directly via the message box, without going through the reviews. See how it went with him.
Best regards

Good evening,
I have the same question as Patoupasin. I would like to do this hike but in reverse, ending at La Venta. How should I go about it? Many thanks.

Please note that from point 8 onwards, 70% of the route is on roads, for those who wish to remain in natural surroundings.
At point 5, take a short detour to the left to reach the summit of Mount Arxuria (visible) and enjoy a panoramic view.

Hello, I would like to do this hike with a group of hikers on 24 October 2021, but my concern is that I would like to eat at the Loretxoa sheep farm at 1:00/1:30 p.m. Your route seems very interesting to me, but if we do it in the proposed direction, Loretxoa is too close to the start, so we would have to do the hike in the other direction.
My question is, what time would we need to leave the car park to arrive at Loretxoa at 1 p.m. if we did the hike in the opposite direction? How difficult is the route in the opposite direction? And, if you don't mind, could you give me the same description, but starting from point 11 and arriving at point 1?I often use Visorando for my hikes, and I love the fact that our movements follow the proposed route, so we can quickly see if we stray. But in reverse? I'm really afraid of leading the group astray. Thank you for your help, which will be invaluable to me. Best regards

We couldn't quite follow the description. We lost our way after number 3: we couldn't find the venta... we saw an old barn and then a house that had been restored by a young man... no restaurant... no signposts...In short, we must have taken a wrong turn somewhere, but we couldn't figure out where! The walk was splendid nonetheless. Thank you for the idea!

A magnificent hike where you encounter all kinds of different animals and an equally interesting passage through burial sites dating back several millennia.
