From Bayonne or Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, head towards Bidarray. Cross the Nive river and immediately turn left onto the small road that runs alongside the Nive. Follow the sign for the hikers' car park. Turn right just before a pretty little stone bridge. The car park is further on, on the left, after a recycling area.
(S/E) Retrace your steps for a few metres and, at the first road on the right, cross the stream (signposted Saint-Martin d'Arrossa via the Chemin des Contrebandiers). Follow this road and, at the first three-way junction, turn left. The road climbs up to the Otsandaburua farm.
(1) Just before the farm, take the fork to the right. A clay and pebble path climbs very steeply. On this day, it was very slippery, which was a blow to morale. Reach a ridge line.
There isa magnificent view on both sides, with the Iparla ridges on our right. You will arrive at a flat area with a pretty hut.
(2) Opposite, facing south, a path climbs to the summit of Ineta. To descend, take the path on the south-west side that winds its way through gorse and heather to the altitude of 307 on the map.
(3) Continue straight ahead. The path widens and is bordered by a dry stone wall (a kind of drovers' road). Descend to a stream. Cross it and take the path on the right to the Itzeenea barn.
(4) Do not follow the path that climbs to the left of a fence (probably a shortcut, but not obvious), but go through a small gate and enter the meadow. Then follow a wide grassy path to the next crossroads.
(5) Turn left onto a pleasant path that becomes a narrow trail winding through the branches. It is not obvious here. Reach the fence you left at Itzeenea and arrive at a dead end.
(6) Go through a small gate on the other side of the fence. The path, which is once again well marked, leads to a barn.
(7) Then take the grassy path on the right and follow it to a dirt track. Go through a gate and continue to the next three-way junction.
(8) Take the track on the left, which is sometimes stony and sometimes concrete, leading to another track. Follow it to the left and very quickly, at a barn, climb up to the right along a path through heather to the summit of Larla.
Magnificent 360° view of the coast and the peaks of the Basque Country, Béarn and Hautes Pyrénées.
(9) Follow the ridge northwards and immediately after the remains of an enclosure, turn north-west to join a track at a barn. Take this track to the right to an unnamed pass (near altitude 466).
(10) On the right is the Saint-Martin d'Arrossa path. Continue left on this orange-marked track until you reach a road.
(11) Follow it to the left and immediately turn left to follow the orange markings until you reach the road you left earlier. Take it to the left and descend to a small path on the left just after a small bridge.
(12) Take this dirt track which climbs up to the Otsandaburua farm.
(1) Continue straight ahead along the same path you took on the way up until you reach the car park where you started (S/E).
) is not enough to compensate for the disappointment of the descent that follows. The path is concrete in many places and difficult until point 10, as is the road for the last 2 kilometres.
