Port of Bielsa and return via the ridges of Port Vieux

The Port de Bielsa is reminiscent of a miniature version of the Brèche de Roland (in the Pyrenees). It can be seen from several places along the road leading to the start. Once you reach the other side, the view of the valley and the Sierra Pelada is spectacular
The return trip via Les Crête du Port Vieux offers splendid views, but requires some experience of high mountain terrain.
Following the GPS track is essential as there are no signposts. See Practical Information.

Description of the walk

Parking at the tunnel on the D173.

(S/E) Pass to the left of the buildings. Find the start of a path, marked in yellow. Very quickly, you will come to a small passage where you will need to use your hands. No difficulty.
Once you have passed this, continue following the yellow markings to the Riou Nère waterfall on the other side of the stream on the left.
The trail, still marked, continues to climb through the mountain pastures, interspersed with rocky areas, until you reach the Port de Bataillence junction.

(1) Leave the yellow markings that go left and continue on a path that heads south. This path is clearly visible. Keep climbing and, after several switchbacks, you will approach a scree slope.
The path climbing up the middle of the scree is clearly visible and easy to follow, with stable rocks. It then winds its way through several hairpin bends between the boulders and, after a final passage, arrives at a small gap overlooking Spain (altitude 2,429 metres).

(2) Port de Bielsa. The landscape is completely different on this southern slope. The view of the valley below is magnificent and very green.
The spectacle is even more striking if you have climbed up in the fog. What could have been a disappointment turns out to be a reward with this clear, sunny view. Sometimes it can be the opposite.
Descend a few metres on the southern slope to take a path that branches off to the right towards the west, on fairly steep slopes.

At around 2,421 metres, a cairn seems to indicate a direct route along the ridge towards Pic de Marioules, but choose to continue westwards along the slope

At around 2,465 m, you will reach a slightly more comfortable rocky section.
At around 2,499 m, join the ridge line, which climbs easily.

(3) At an elevation of 2,561 metres, you will reach the summit of Pic de Marioules. Descend westwards along the ridge line until you reach a pass at around 2,500 metres.

(4) Continue west.
At around 2,487 m, climb up to the right and you will reach the summit of Pic de la Forqueta (2,532 m).
Pass over the second peak of this double summit before descending westwards.
At around 2,492 m, cross another small pass and you will easily reach the last summit, Pic de l'Aiguillette (elevation 2,517 m on OSM)

(5) Descend southwards and leave a path that plunges directly north-west.

(6) At around 2,454 m, without descending to Port Vieux, take the path that crosses northwards on the western slope of Pic de l'Aiguillette. The ground is a little crumbly and, here too, the slope is steep. This path must therefore be taken with the utmost caution..

(7) At around 2,392 m, cross the Col de l'Aiguillette and turn right to descend into the valley on a rather confusing path to the tunnel car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike should be undertaken when there is no snow or fog. People who are prone to vertigo should refrain from continuing beyond point 2 and return by the same route. The ridge between points 2 and 6 is vertiginous and unmarked. A GPS track will be useful. At point 6, keep a close eye on the path that descends to the right and do not descend to the old port.

A magnificent hike with breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views.
We saw a little snow before crossing over to the south side.
The trail is a little difficult to follow on the ridge and you have to be careful to find the passage at point 6. We went a little too far to the old port hut and turned back.
I would not recommend this hike if you are prone to vertigo.

Fairly easy hike as the entire route is parish specific to Brittany and has good visibility from start to finish

Nice route, we came back down via the old port and the Plan d'Aragnouet, then we hitchhiked back up to the Bielsa tunnel.

Thanks to visotraceur for suggesting this hike.
Simply magnificent!
We are not experienced mountaineers and are from Normandy. The route seemed much easier than the comments and reviews suggested.
The path downhill just before Port-Vieux is between two cairns and before the rocky outcrop, so it's easy to find. As for the start of the ridges after the Porte de Bielsa, the comments seem technical and accurate in terms of altitude, but you just need to use the cairns to find your bearings and, above all, stay on the rocky part. Basically, you need to follow the ridges.
We found this hike a little short for a day. The hikers we met were doing the route in reverse, from the car park to Port-Vieux, along the ridges to the Porte de Bielsa and continuing along the ridges to the Port de Bataillance via the peak of the same name, before descending via the path indicated on the IGN maps.

The landscapes are magnificent, the arrival at Port de Bielsa is breathtaking, and there are 360° views from the ridges. Technically, the path up is very well marked and very passable. On the ridges, it becomes more complicated. The path is often non-existent. I don't recommend it if you're afraid of heights!
However, we were unable to find the way back. So we descended to Port Vieux and took the hiking trail that descends to "Plan d'Aragnouet". We had to hitchhike to get back to the car!

For those who don't feel like "playing the air girl" and are afraid of heights between points 2 and 6, it is possible to take a different route from the port of Bielsa (also called "Puerto de la Forqueta" by the Spanish). Once you reach the port, descend a little into Aragonese territory until you reach the fork with the path that climbs up from the southern mouth of the tunnel and leads to Port Vieux. At the fork, climb gently and turn right towards point 6.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Check the condition of the track between Port Vieux and point 6. I travelled along it a few years ago. It may have deteriorated since then.
