Irubelakaskoa from the Otxondo Pass

For those familiar with the Irubelkaskoa route from the Basasagarra farm, this hike is much easier.
The road leading to the start from the Otxondo Pass already offers magnificent views.
The hike passes through a beautiful forest and continues along grassy paths, arriving – as is often the case in the Basque Country – at the summit with a 360° view. The return route follows a ridge line to Gorramakil and then Gorramendi for those wishing to extend the hike, with splendid views of all the peaks throughout. For this hike, I joined the track at the Otanarteko Pass.

Description of the walk

At Col Otxondo, take the road signposted Gorramendi. Pass Col d’Itzulegi and park 300 m further on.

(S/E) Take the middle path which passes immediately to the left of a sort of lodge (converted hut). The path climbs along the western flank of Gorramendi-Gorramakil and arrives gently onto a small plateau where there are two huts: Urtsuko Borda, sheltered by large rocks.

(1) Continue along the path, which veers sharply to the right. This path winds through the forest, crossed by a few streams. You will reach a clearing, Unizko lepoa (754 m), below the Uniz hill (778 m).

(2) The path heads back into the undergrowth to reach the Burdimotzeko Pass (898 m). You are now below Barda or Akomendi (956 m).

(3) Follow the path north-east towards Irubela, passing along the western flank of its ridge. A little further on, you reach the Gorostiko Pass.

(4) Follow the grassy path which veers south-east. Pass beneath and go round the 861 m peak on the right. Reach a pass (835 m), then continue along the path to the summit of Irubelakaskoa or Alkaxuri (950 m) by following the ridge line. This path passes through a rocky area but remains clearly visible. Magnificent views of all the peaks.

(5) Retrace your steps back to the Burdimotzeko Pass.

(3) Take a path on the left that climbs south-south-west along the ridge to the summit of Gorramakil (1090 m).

(6) Follow the track due south. At the first bend, leave it and take a path straight ahead which joins it a little further on at Col Otarnarteko (1032 m).

(7) Here, either continue along the grassy path which leads to Gorramendi or, as shown on the map, follow the track to reach the Gorramendi junction.

(8) Descend, still on this track, to the next junction.

(9) Turn right and follow this road back to the car park, past the Col Itzulegi (S/E).

Notes

At point (7), it is possible to climb the peaks of Otanarte, Gorramendi and Aizpitza in succession. This adds approximately 70 m of elevation gain. The paths after Gorramendi are not always clearly visible, depending on the season.

The final stretch remains on the road
I'm going to see if we can return via a trail down from Goramakil
We'll see, and I'll share the track if it's clear

Nice outing but too much driving on the way back; there are other options.

A lovely walk, done on a Friday, so I only came across two people, despite the brilliant weather. Beautiful scenery, lots of horses and Pottoks, and young foals. A well-marked route with a reasonable elevation gain; take care on the Irubela ridge if you’re afraid of heights, or if it’s windy or the ground is wet. At the end of the Gorramakil, you cross a road to return to the starting point. Personally, it didn’t bother me too much as it means you don’t have to watch your step so closely and can walk with your head in the clouds! Perhaps those who dislike roads will find paths or tracks already made.
