L'Iramendy from Estérençuby

The Iramendy ridge is bristling with poudingue peaks (conglomerate of round pebbles). From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, this gives it the appearance of a dinosaur. Climbing to the summit via this ridge from north to south requires a bit of scrambling (level 2 lower). The proposed hike climbs to the summit via the other ridge. No difficulties other than the total elevation gain and a few steep sections. Magnificent 360° view of the surrounding mountains.

Description of the walk

From Bayonne, take the road to Cambo and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. At Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, take the D 301 towards Saint-Michel, Estérençuby. In Estérençuby, park in the centre.

(S/E) Take the road that runs along the right bank of the Nive de Béhérobie for about 1.5 km.

(1) Turn right and cross the Nive. Immediately after, at Jauregitoa, at a crossroads.

(2) Head south on the path to the left behind a building. It enters the forest and begins to climb.
At the next intersection, stay on the trail, which climbs steeply and steadily southwards. You will reach an open area filled with ferns, then a hairpin bend.

(3) This time, head due north to return to the wooded area, until you reach the next hairpin bend.

(4) Leave the forest again and head south into new grassy areas. After another hairpin bend to the right, you will arrive at a sheepfold.

(5) Take a track on the left that follows a level curve through a magnificent beech forest. At the entrance to the woods, leave a track on your left that leads to sheepfolds. After a large detour to the left, the track begins to descend to a road that leads to Estérençuby (signposted Esterençuby).

(6) Take the road on the left. It climbs back up to a crossroads (757 m on the map).

(7) Then turn right, leave the road immediately after a barn and take a track that follows the ridge. Pass above a sheepfold at a crossroads.

(8) "On the right, the path leads to the sheepfold, which you will take on the way back." Cross the meadow or continue straight ahead to reach a drinking trough.

(9) Go around this fenced-in meadow on the left. A fairly well-marked trail leads uphill. It goes around a small forest on the right and quickly reaches Pic d'Iramendy (868 m).

(10). Lovely 360-degree view.
Return by the same route until you reach the crossroads.

(8) Turn left and descend towards the sheepfold, which you saw from above on the way up. Pass between the two buildings, turn right immediately and join a clearly visible track below that leads to another sheepfold. Turn right and join the road.

(11) Turn left and follow the road downhill for about 4 km until you reach the top of the village of Estérençuby.

(12) Turn left, then right and join the bridge over the Nive. Cross and join the (S/E).

We went hiking under cloudy skies, which ended up staying low, so we didn't get to see the undoubtedly magnificent landscapes!!! Nevertheless, it was still beautiful with the fog.
It was very hot and the climb from Estérençuby (230 m) to Pi d'Iramendy (868 m) made us sweat, literally!
To be repeated on a clear day...
Regarding the road journey: at the beginning, when leaving the village, it's not a problem. However, from point 11 onwards, there is indeed too much road travel...
There's a nice inn in the village where you can stop for a drink at the end of the hike with lots of other CR10 hikers...

I wasn't able to fully appreciate this hike because I climbed during a spell of good weather on a very wet and muddy trail!
It's a shame because the view (as far as possible) from the pass or the peak is magnificent.
I'll have to do it again when the weather is better.

Hello, I completed this route on Friday, 1 November. It offers a lovely view once you reach the top, although the road section detracts from the charm, as someone else has also mentioned...
However, be careful around the houses. I encountered three rather aggressive dogs, one in particular in a house about 2 km from the end. These are not sheepdogs with flocks, they are just untethered dogs with no garden fence.
I made a slight detour for the first two, which were from the same house, but for the third, a detour was not possible. Do not hesitate to show your superiority by shouting; this made it back off a little so that I could pass.
They are very territorial, none of them followed me more than 10-20 metres from their houses. They won't follow you, so don't be too afraid, even if it can be intimidating at the time.
Best regards

Most of the hike is on roads. It's a shame because the peak itself is very interesting.

Half of this hike is on a paved road, which takes away some of its charm. However, we only encountered one car on this winding road. There was a 360° view from the summit, except that we were above the clouds on the opposite side from the village of Esterençuby. So we were unable to enjoy the valley in that direction.
Walking at a leisurely pace, we completed the circular route in 4 hours and 15 minutes, excluding our lunch break.

Hike to the highest point for a 360° view. My altimeter showed an elevation gain of 690m. In winter, especially at weekends, this route crosses wild boar hunting grounds, so caution is advised.
