The Consaterre Lakes from the Pont Tisné

The three Consaterre Lakes, dominated by the Pics de Berdalade, de Thou and de la Haille, are truly beautiful. The scenery is magnificent and wild. Silence reigns supreme here, and given the steep climb, you won’t be disturbed too much.

Description of the walk

In Saint-Lary-Soulan, head towards Spain. Continue on the D929 for 3 km, then turn right onto the D19 towards Tramezaïgues and follow this road for 2.5 km through the Rioumajou valley to the Pont de Tisné: start of the hike at 1,100 m

(S/E) Take theGR® 105 on the left-hand side of the road, which leads to Frédancon, Hospice du Rioumajou and Port d'Ourdissétou. You will soon come to a signpost indicating the lakes.

(1) Leave theGR® 105 and turn left towards the lakes. The path climbs steadily through a pine forest at a gradient of 28% in this first section. Take your time – this is only the start. This long climb leads to a clearing with a hut at an altitude of 1,498 m.

(2) The path climbs through the clearing and reaches the Hitte Longue stream.

(3) Follow the path which runs alongside the stream and continues to climb steeply. At around 2,070 m, the path bends left, heading due north

(4) Leave the Hitte Longue stream and head due north. You’ll join the path descending from Cap de Laubère, coming from the village of Ens.

(5) Turn right and follow this path due south. After a short rest, the gradient steepens again and you rejoin the stream.

(6) The path continues to climb alongside the stream to the first Consaterre lake (elevation 2344m).

(7) The three lakes lie in a row. After taking in the scenery and enjoying a well-deserved rest, the return journey follows the same route back to the Pont de Tisné car park (S/E).

It’s a long, steep climb!
A fairly straightforward hike to follow, although we did have to consult the map in the pastures (multiple tracks).

There’s an alternative route at the end of the walk if you don’t want to cross the stream bed (even though it’s dry, you’ll need to use your hands and there are large boulders).
Just rejoin the GR trail just above (the path coming from Hens).
To get back on it, just take the path on the left before ‘entering’ the stream bed.
It’s a bit longer but less challenging.

The lakes are magnificent.
And if you’ve still got some energy left, there are one or two peaks you can climb.

This hike offers some magnificent views. The paths and tracks are clearly marked. There are a few challenging sections, and the elevation gain is as described. Well worth a go

Easy trails, but very steep, especially in the first third through the forest.
I recommend climbing 150m further up; from there you have a wonderful view of the three lakes behind you, and the snow-capped mountain range in front of you in May
Thank you

This route really puts your legs to the test as it climbs all the way up (over 20% gradient)! But hang in there – the view at the top is magnificent!
On the other hand, the route is clearly marked and the terrain is pleasant, with no major difficulties apart from the final stretch.
Hike undertaken on a fine day.

The start of the walk takes place in the forest and is accompanied by the sound of water. Watch out, it’s uphill!
Once at the top, we arrive in the heart of a clearing, surrounded by trees and mountains (stunning!)
This section offers a bit of a breather before we resume the climb and face our final destination.
During the climb, you can stop halfway up the slope and watch the marmots poking their heads out

We continue the climb and the landscape changes, with less greenery and more rock. We sometimes have to walk over patches of snow that haven’t melted yet, which led us to take a slight detour to avoid them and rejoin the trail.

A few hundred metres from our destination, we come to another ‘flat’ section and finally reach the first lake (nothing to write home about), but as we continue towards the second, that’s where the view is truly spectacular! All the more so when we turn round and see the lake set against the mountains!

The descent, meanwhile, was very easy despite our concerns during the ascent!

Enjoy the hike!
