From Bayonne, head towards Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. At Bidarray, cross the Nive. Turn right after the bridge and continue for a few metres, then cross the Bastan stream on the right. Follow the road that runs alongside it, ignoring all the turnings on the right. Cross the Bastan at Pont d'Enfer. Quickly leave this road and turn left. The end of this road is the Basasagara farm. It is best to park 400 m before reaching the terminus car park on the right, at an altitude of 290 m. There are few parking spaces. See § Practical information.
(S/E) Take the track that leaves the road on the left. If you park at the terminus car park, a small path will take you back to this track. The gradient is steep. This track, which is largely concrete, is challenging, especially on the way back.
Leave a path on your right and continue along this wide track until you reach a right-angle bend and a barn on your left (Larantonaldeko Borda). Border marker 87. Pass to the right of the barn and after three hairpin bends, you will arrive at the Col de Lacho at an altitude of 540 metres.
(1) At the end of the track, a path arrives opposite Bidarray (Tour de l'harihandi, yellow markings). Take the stony track on the right and follow the yellow markings to an unnamed pass. On the left are ruins at around 630 m.
(2) Leave the yellow markings that go left and follow the grassy track that climbs south. The slope becomes gentler. You will arrive at a gate.
(3) After the gate, quickly leave a grassy track on your left and continue on the one that veers slightly to the right. Continue climbing southwards until you reach a small path coming from the left.
(4) This is an important point, especially on the way back, as you must remember to turn left. Continue straight ahead. Pass to the left of a Basque cross, arrive at a ruin and a small pond, and join the GR® 10 coming from the left.
(5) Turn right and follow it to the first summit: Atalatze (906 m). The view from this spot is already breathtaking.
(6) Follow theGR® 10, which veers right and runs along the ridge to the Col d'Iparla at an altitude of 960 metres.
(7) There is a bird's eye view of a path coming up from below.
From there, there are two options. You can take the path marked with a cross on the right, which simply means that theGR® 10 trail goes to the left. This is a small, very passable path. Alternatively, you can continue this route via theGR®10 trailon the left, where you will sometimes need to use your hands to help you along. Reach the ridge and follow it to Pic d'Iparla at an altitude of 1,049 metres.
(8) There are breathtaking views in all directions. The summit is a dome and there are many places to rest and contemplate the view.
From the summit, there are two options for descending. Either take the same route, paying close attention, or (route choice) pass the summit and follow theGR® 10 for about a hundred metres to the next pass (Iparlako Lepoa) at around 1026 m: there is a cairn here.
(9) Go to the right (west) and follow a small grassy path that follows a gully. There are a few orange markings. You will soon reach a cross path at around 990 m: another cairn.
(10) Take this path on the right, which is not easy to spot. It first follows a contour line and then descends 40 m to the Col d'Iparla.
(7) Follow the outward route in reverse, then descend to (S/E).
