The Pic d'Iparla from the Basasagara farm

This is an alternative route to the Pic d'Iparla. It starts a little higher up and avoids the additional detour that was recently put in place to avoid a farm and the degraded sections ofthe GR®10.

Be warned, this hike is not an easy one. The first 250 metres are challenging. The rest of the route along grassy tracks is very pleasant, with magnificent views of the ridges and Irubelakaskoa. The panorama from the ridges and the summit is spectacular.

Description of the walk

From Bayonne, head towards Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. At Bidarray, cross the Nive. Turn right after the bridge and continue for a few metres, then cross the Bastan stream on the right. Follow the road that runs alongside it, ignoring all the turnings on the right. Cross the Bastan at Pont d'Enfer. Quickly leave this road and turn left. The end of this road is the Basasagara farm. It is best to park 400 m before reaching the terminus car park on the right, at an altitude of 290 m. There are few parking spaces. See § Practical information.

(S/E) Take the track that leaves the road on the left. If you park at the terminus car park, a small path will take you back to this track. The gradient is steep. This track, which is largely concrete, is challenging, especially on the way back.

Leave a path on your right and continue along this wide track until you reach a right-angle bend and a barn on your left (Larantonaldeko Borda). Border marker 87. Pass to the right of the barn and after three hairpin bends, you will arrive at the Col de Lacho at an altitude of 540 metres.

(1) At the end of the track, a path arrives opposite Bidarray (Tour de l'harihandi, yellow markings). Take the stony track on the right and follow the yellow markings to an unnamed pass. On the left are ruins at around 630 m.

(2) Leave the yellow markings that go left and follow the grassy track that climbs south. The slope becomes gentler. You will arrive at a gate.

(3) After the gate, quickly leave a grassy track on your left and continue on the one that veers slightly to the right. Continue climbing southwards until you reach a small path coming from the left.

(4) This is an important point, especially on the way back, as you must remember to turn left. Continue straight ahead. Pass to the left of a Basque cross, arrive at a ruin and a small pond, and join the GR® 10 coming from the left.

(5) Turn right and follow it to the first summit: Atalatze (906 m). The view from this spot is already breathtaking.

(6) Follow theGR® 10, which veers right and runs along the ridge to the Col d'Iparla at an altitude of 960 metres.

(7) There is a bird's eye view of a path coming up from below.
From there, there are two options. You can take the path marked with a cross on the right, which simply means that theGR® 10 trail goes to the left. This is a small, very passable path. Alternatively, you can continue this route via theGR®10 trailon the left, where you will sometimes need to use your hands to help you along. Reach the ridge and follow it to Pic d'Iparla at an altitude of 1,049 metres.

(8) There are breathtaking views in all directions. The summit is a dome and there are many places to rest and contemplate the view.
From the summit, there are two options for descending. Either take the same route, paying close attention, or (route choice) pass the summit and follow theGR® 10 for about a hundred metres to the next pass (Iparlako Lepoa) at around 1026 m: there is a cairn here.

(9) Go to the right (west) and follow a small grassy path that follows a gully. There are a few orange markings. You will soon reach a cross path at around 990 m: another cairn.

(10) Take this path on the right, which is not easy to spot. It first follows a contour line and then descends 40 m to the Col d'Iparla.

(7) Follow the outward route in reverse, then descend to (S/E).

Notes

As mentioned, there are few parking spaces, but this hike is rarely done from this starting point.
If the small car park is full, go back down to Bidarray and take the classic route. Too many new hikers, a result of the lockdowns, do not respect the freedom of passage of local residents.
The inconvenience caused is forcing residents and local authorities to ban all parking, even in places where it did not bother anyone before. Proof of this can be seen in the nearby hike (Les Peñas de Itsusi). In conclusion, local hikers are being penalised.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Despite extremely foggy weather, a very pleasant hike with beautiful views.
There are also some lovely picnic spots next to the potoks.
It's definitely worth doing.
For regular walkers or people who are simply fit, allow around 3 hours for the 10 km.

I did this route yesterday. The road from the village to the start of the hike is very narrow (only wide enough for one vehicle, except near a widening in the road) and is about 3 km long, so we're glad it's not very busy. The steep, paved section at the beginning is the most difficult, I would say, both going up and down. It's a good warm-up. But you have to climb hard to reach the ridges and the Pic d'Iparla, where nature spoils us. It's truly exceptionally beautiful. I didn't see any vultures yesterday, but I did see some pottoks. We passed about fifteen people. Personally, I only use the GPS tracker for guidance and it was perfect. A wonderful discovery. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I highly recommend it.

Very, very windy today, but no rain and beautiful sunshine. We finally met a few other hikers, but they were all setting off from Bidarray... This route is very pleasant, with a steady climb throughout the hike...

Hello,
In my opinion, there is a small error in the details before point number 1, as you have to pass to the left of marker 87, not to the right.
Otherwise, everything is perfectly detailed and the views on the hike are magnificent!

On this beautiful day on Wednesday 22 December, I really enjoyed this hike off the beaten track. And that's what we're looking for here, not marked trails. The start was challenging, to say the least. But reaching the first ridges and the summit of Iparla made us forget the difficulty. For me, having climbed Iparla via Bidarray (GR10), the Iparla Pass or Baigorry, 80% of this new route was new to me. I enjoyed the little detour after the summit, where the GPS came in handy for finding the tiny path. I'll have to do it again with my hiking buddy. Once again, thanks to Taboulechat, who often finds original routes to popular summits.

Thank you, louis24k. It works this time. All we need now is some sunshine to test out this new taboulechat route with complete peace of mind. That will probably be my next comment here. Have a good day, everyone.

Good evening, Taboulechat
Thanks, but it's only this track that I'm having trouble with. All the others open fine, but this one gives me an error message. I think the link is incorrect. I've never had any problems with your tracks before. (It has happened with others, but it's very rare.)
In this case, I don't need GPS because I know the area and I've already done the Iparla via Bidarray and the Col de Lacho (starting from the GR10). But otherwise, I like to have a GPS (a Twonav) in my pocket that beeps when I've gone 20 metres in the wrong direction.
I think Visorando will solve this problem, as Gérard says.
Best regards
Xiberotarra

Hello Xiberotarra

I don't see what I can do for you.
Personally, when I want to follow another hiker's route, I add the hike to my favourites and I have it on my account with the GPX track. Then all I have to do is follow it on my smartphone.
Best regards
taboulechat

Hello Netra or Taboulechat. This version seems very interesting to me, but I can't download the GPS track. I've tried on two different browsers. Can you fix this, please?
