Le Larla from Saint-Étienne-de-BaÏgorry

The Larla can be climbed from several points. This circular walk is slightly longer than the others and has a greater elevation gain. Despite this difficulty, the walk remains very pleasant and offers, as is often the case in the Basque Country, magnificent views.

Description of the walk

The start of the hike is at the Eyrheralde car park, near the recycling centre (in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-BaÏgorry).

(S/E) Follow Suhilarreko Bidea towards Saint-Étienne-de-BaÏgorry. Take the first road on the right, for 200 m.

(1) Leave the road and take the path on the right, which winds uphill to a hut.

(2) Follow the path climbing north-north-west. Pass a hunters’ post and reach a track.

(3) Turn left onto it and follow it to the end.

(4) Follow the ridge line to Larrango, at elevation 582.

(5) Descend to the pass and the renovated hut below.

(6) Follow the path, which is sometimes stony, sometimes grassy, passing to the left of the hut and beginning to climb northwards. You will reach another renovated hut.

(7) Continue to the right until you reach a path on the right at the 638m mark.

(8) Take this path and continue to the summit of Larla.

(9) Descend north-east and follow the ridge.

(10) Continue straight on, reaching the right-hand side of some rock cavities. Continue descending, keeping as close as possible to the rocky ridge on the right. The path is not clearly marked and requires you to weave your way between the rocks. Join a paved path below.

(11) Follow this path to the right; it becomes grassy and initially runs alongside some cavities, then, after a wide circular loop, veers eastwards and passes to the left of a ruin.

(12) The path descends and heads north. The track is very well marked and passes to the right of a chasm before joining a concrete track.

(13) Turn right onto this track and, at the next bend, take a path on the right which descends and joins a small track, which you also take to the right. Pass close to caves from which iron ore was once extracted. The path widens and becomes a track: this is the Iron Discovery Trail. Follow it to a sort of enclosure, open on both sides, at the 500-metre mark.

(14) Leave the main path, which continues straight ahead, and take a track to the right through the ferns. This track leads back to the renovated hut you passed on the way out.

(6) Follow the newly resurfaced track to the left until the next junction.

(15) Go straight on. At the fork, at elevation 486, ignore a path on your left and go straight on to rejoin the track at a fork you passed on the way out.

(3) Turn left and follow the ascent route in the opposite direction to return to (S/E).

From (14) to (6), there are plenty of ferns from June to November.

A beautiful hike of moderate difficulty, with the climb mainly at the beginning. It is necessary to follow the GPS carefully as the intersections can be difficult to see and there are no signposts. In addition, there are long stretches through dense ferns and brambles, so long clothing is highly recommended! The scenery is superb. This path has very little shade, so I recommend cloudy weather, which will also enhance the contrast of the landscape.

A very interesting alternative route to Larla. The climb is steep, but there’s a stunning 360-degree view from the summit: the Pyrenees mountain range, Jara, Baïgura, Iparla and Toutoulia. The descent along the mountainside is very pleasant.

A hike we went on last Saturday in glorious autumn sunshine.
The view of the Iparla ridges during the climb is superb! ! !
Following the ridge from the summit down to the concrete track requires a bit of concentration but isn’t difficult at all.
The return journey poses no navigation issues; the path is easy to follow and well marked.
In conclusion, I would describe this as an easy hike.

This route is apparently not very well-used in certain sections. As summer draws to a close, the ferns are tall, and on two occasions we lost the trail; we headed into the undergrowth in what we thought was the right direction and found the trail again further on. I wouldn’t recommend this hike to anyone who isn’t an experienced hiker or who doesn’t have a good sense of direction. Although this hike offers some lovely views and passes close to the old mines (which are interesting), I didn’t really enjoy it. I won’t be doing this hike again in the summer. But why not in winter? It will certainly be easier to find your way then.

This walk often follows the ridge and offers stunning views. However, we had great difficulty finding the path, which was hidden among the ferns at the end of August – a little on the way there, but especially on the way back. Walking through the ferns was a struggle, even though the narrow path we were on ran parallel to wider, more open trails. We took a wrong turn several times, which spoiled what could have been a magnificent hike. We won’t be doing it again.

A magnificent hike that really takes you off the beaten track. Do watch out for fog in the rocky section, and the ferns will be quite a nuisance when they’re tall. But on this 14 February, with sunshine in the morning and sunny spells in the afternoon, the hike was very pleasant. The description was excellent and the GPS route was spot on; thanks once again to the author for this new suggestion.
