At Sare, take the D406 towards Vera, passing Haranbura. Continue to the Mikeletegikoborda farm on the left. Pass a picnic area just beside it. Park one kilometre further on. Several spaces on the right along the road.
(S/E) A wide red-earth track starts behind a culvert. It initially runs alongside the road, climbing steadily westwards. It then turns north-west; the red, sticky earth disappears and the track becomes a most pleasant forest path. Follow this main track, ignoring all the paths you come across on your right. After 1.5 km, you’ll come across a narrower path coming from Sare.
(1) Turn left. On the day of this hike, a tree with all its branches was lying across the path and is likely to remain there for some time. Go round it on the left without straying too far. Continue along the path until you reach an open area. Note the numerous hunting posts for wood pigeons on the left. Reach boundary marker no. 32 and turn right towards a ruin. An old black inn that has been disused for a long time.
(2) Turn right onto a narrow path that starts behind the building and follows the border, keeping a rocky outcrop in sight. This path climbs very steeply. Take your time. Elevation gain of 180 m over 0.5 km. Gradient of 36%.
(3) After a well-deserved short break, continue along the path on the right. The slope levels off slightly. Walk amongst ferns and gorse. You’ll reach a grassy clearing. (Boundary marker).
(4) Immediately pass a grassy path on your right and head due north. After a bend to the east, cross the path coming from the reservoir.
(5)PR® and yellow markings for about 150 m.
(6) Leave the yellow markings, which head towards the Athekaleum pass, and go straight on along the path marked with a Yellow Cross on a stone. Keep your eyes on a pass slightly to the left. Several paths will appear. Choose the one that suits you best. The paths lead to a grassy area and slope towards the west. Reach the pass via a sort of staircase in poor condition.
(7) From here, the slope levels off. Pass to the right of a boundary marker and cross a stream. From there, walk across the grass. The path is difficult to follow in foggy weather. No markings. Bring a compass or, preferably, follow the GPS track. Pass to the left of two small rocky outcrops and head for the one looming across a passage. From there, the path follows slabs and then winds through the grass. Pass to the right of a sheepfold and join the track. Turn right and head towards the summit of La Rhune (Larrun).
(8) Turn back on the track. At the fork, continue straight on along this track. After three sharp bends on a steep descent, keep a close eye out for the start of a path on the left. It’s not easy to spot.
(9) This path, which is quite stony at first, becomes grassy after the first bend. After several hairpin bends, you’ll reach a path running perpendicular to it.
(10) Turn left. You’ll briefly enter the forest. Upon exiting and after a wide right-hand bend, you’ll reach a crossroads.
(11) Take the narrow path opposite which descends and, further on, joins a track coming from the right. Turn left onto this track which, after a long stretch through the forest, leads back to the venta.
(2) Follow the same route back as on the way there until you reach (S/E).
