Saint-Pierre-d'Allevard walks
From the Bassin du Flumet to Montouvrard
This is a half-day hike. A steady climb takes you to the village of Montouvrard, where you can enjoy beautiful views of Belledonne.
The yellow markings are a little faded.
Le Grand Rocher via the Crêt du Poulet refuge
An easy hiking version of this climb to the Grand Rocher. Once past the refuge, the route follows the Crêt Luisard ridge, where the view is breathtaking in all directions, and you can even see Mont Blanc from the summit.
Crêt du Poulet via the Chalet Pierre Roubet
Short hike to the Crêt du Poulet orientation tables via the Chalet Pierre Roubet.
Crêt du Poulet, Grand Rocher and Col du Merdaret circular loop
A beautiful circular route on the ridge of the Grand Rocher, which acts as a balcony with a superb panorama of the Haut-Bréda valley, the Allevard massif and the Sept Laux massif. Easy access from the Barioz cross-country ski centre and an easy route to do in mid-spring when the peaks are still snow-covered.
Crêt du Poulet, Crêt Luisard
A family walk through forests and meadows in the Belledonne Massif with superb panoramic views of the Grande Chartreuse Massif on one side and the Vanoise and Sept-Laux on the other.
The Grand Rocher and the Crêt du Poulet
A stone's throw from town and you're high in the mountains. But pay attention to the risks.
Crêt du Poulet in winter
A lovely snowshoe hike above Grésivaudan through forests and meadows, offering beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The route is easy and ends at the Crêt du Poulet refuge, where you can enjoy a glass of mulled wine.
Brame-Farine ridges
Hike starting from a small village in Isère (on the border with Savoie) to reach the summit that separates it from its neighbour Allevard-les-Bains. From the ridge, a superb panorama allows you to discover the latter at the foot of the massif of the same name. This hike is more athletic than recreational, with a long and fairly steep climb, mainly through sometimes damp undergrowth, which can make the descent quite slippery.
From Chapelle-du-Bard to Pont du Diable via Beauvoir
A lovely hike with beautiful views and scenery, quite varied, a little bit of tarmac but not much, with good signposting. Doable almost all year round, except in muddy conditions after rain, of course. At the Pont du Diable, you will cross the Dauphiné-Savoie border, with its pretty, colourful boundary stone. By whom?
Boucles des Plagnes - Trail 2000 - Col de Claran
This is a very pretty route through the mountain pastures to the Col de Claran, offering panoramic views of all the mountains in the Bauges and Chartreuse regions in particular, but also far beyond, as far as Mont Blanc and Mont Aiguille.
The circuit is very well marked with traditional yellow signs and markings on the rocks at regular intervals.
Le Grand Charnier via the shortest route
On the Allevard side, the Grand Charnier is the Belledones peak that must absolutely be added to your list of conquests. At 2,561 metres, it offers 360° views of all the peaks of the two Savoie departments and Isère. Here I suggest the shortest route to reach it, but ‘shorter’ means steeper, and is best suited to experienced hikers. A pleasant hike with a significant elevation gain that becomes technical over the final 300 metres; this summit sometimes remains snow-covered until the end of June.
Petit and Grand Charnier from the small pass
Le Grand Charnier is the peak overlooking the Collet d'Allevard resort. You can climb it via a very scenic walk, which follows the ridge for almost the entire route, and the summit offers magnificent views of all the surrounding mountain ranges.

Circuit of the Refuge de l'Oule and the Chalet du Bout
This is a beautiful loop for a day trip in the Belledonne massif, with varied terrain and landscapes.
The refuge can be a stopover for more alpine hikes.
Croix du Léat, Pierre du Pin and Lac du Léat
Starting from Gleysin, here is a route that is accessible almost all year round (with snowshoes in winter) on the Montagne de Combe Grasse, offering unobstructed views and a visit to a charming lake.
La Croix du Léat
This hike was done on snowshoes, but it can of course be done on foot when there is no snow. Most of the route is marked, with no specific markings for snowshoeing.
Lac du Léat - Refuge de l'Oule
Starting from the village of Gleysin, from the Bourgeat Noire car park, this beautiful loop in Belledonne connects several iconic sites in the Haut Bréda valley. The route passes by the Chalet du Bout, then climbs up to the Croix du Léat, before descending to the peaceful Lac du Léat, ideal for a quiet bivouac with views of the Chartreuse and the Bauges. The route continues to the Refuge de l'Oule, a small, friendly alpine lodge where you can also spend the night, then descends back to the starting point. We did this hike over two days with a night at the lake, but it can also be done in a day for the more experienced. A beautiful and varied loop, between forests, alpine pastures, open ridges and wild waterways.
Alloix waterfalls from Montalieu
This is a short, unusual walk that follows the Alloix torrent. Curious walkers will spend more time admiring the work of the water than walking. This walk can end with a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets of the old village or, as the locals say, "on the paths of yesteryear", where local markings will guide you.
Route on the Plagnes ridges via the Tournelalon bypass
Circular route via the Tournetalon bypass. Climb up to the orientation table at the top of Les Plagnes, where a 360° panorama awaits you. Descend via Super Small Pass before returning to Prerond via the snowshoe trail.
Circular of the Alloix waterfalls and return via Bellechambre
From Saint-Vincent-de-Mercuze, this is a varied, beautiful and enjoyable hike, accessible to children in dry weather. Please note that the climb up the Ruisseau l'Alloix can be very slippery in wet weather. Most of the route is under trees. It is pleasant to do in hot weather, with a short stop halfway to eat at Moulin Tardy (picnic table) and the possibility of swimming in the Alloix. It is best to do this in spring when there is plenty of water and the waterfalls are magnificent.
Circular route from Château du Touvet to Château du Montalieu
An easy circular route, half through woodland and half along small tarmac roads, from one castle to another. This circular route can be combined with another circular route, from the fortified house of La Frette to Château du Touvet.
Montagne de Tigneux
A good hike that can be done from spring to autumn when snow conditions prevent you from going higher. However, you will be close to 2000 m.
Circular route around Sainte-Marie-du-Mont
A route offering stunning views of the Chartreuse, Belledonne, Maurienne and, time and again, Mont Blanc (especially when the trees have no leaves or have shed them).
Numerous streams and torrents create a lovely atmosphere, but require good footwear, unless you fancy having wet feet.
Unfortunately, my route description seems to be causing problems, so I strongly recommend using GPS and the map on your phone!
Crête de Montraillant from the Chapelle Blanche
A good half-day walk to enjoy panoramic views of the Chartreuse, the Vercors in the distance, Lauzière and the nearby Belledonnes.
Please note: there is an error. This hike is on foot and not by mountain bike as indicated.
Montmayeur Towers Route
A walk on Montraillan Hill between Belledonne and Les Bauges, following in the footsteps of the Lord of Montmayeur, vassal of the Duke of Savoy.
Combe and lakes of the Grande Valloire
A very pretty hike in the Belledonne massif. A forest to climb in the cool, mountain pastures offering unobstructed views of the surrounding area and very pretty lakes that reward the effort it takes to get there. Raspberries and blueberries along the way in season, which is a nice bonus!
Col du Merdaret
A very pretty walk above Theys, with a climb towards Belledonne and fantastic views. Between forest and mountain pastures, with the chance to take in the peaks.
Tour de la Villette between Theys and the Col du Barioz
A circular route in the beautiful valley between Theys and the Col du Barioz, ideal for a sunny winter afternoon. Yellow signs mark the route, as well as wooden signs marked "Tour de la Villette".
The Bois de Chavot loop
The tour of the Bois de Chavot is merely a pretext for a lovely route in the Belledonne massif. In this part of Belledonne, the chalets are numbered: first chalet of this, second chalet of that...
This route is accessible for quite a long time in the season due to its moderate altitude of 1,860 m.
The route is signposted, with a large section following theGRP® “Tour du Pays d’Allevard”.
Vallon du Bens circular
This hike is certainly a little long in its entirety, but it can easily be broken down into shorter circular loops. In addition, the wide, shaded track along most of the route is well suited to family walks. And it offers a magnificent panorama at its highest point over the Allevard massif (Belledonne range).
Puy Gris
The title of this hike should be "Bivouac at Puy Gris", as this viewpoint offers a unique experience to anyone who spends a night there under the stars: splendid sunsets and sunrises in a magnificent panorama, the most beautiful in Belledonne. Magnificent lakes dot the route and alpine wildlife is a regular feature.
Any difficult hike requires preparation, and this very difficult hike requires prior study.
From the fortified house of La Frette to the Château du Touvet, a circular route
An easy route in the hills above Le Touvet, from one castle to another, with the first part in the forest and the return via the hamlets on the road, including 250 m on the D29, but without any danger.
Mont Pezard route
A family hike with a variety of attractions: flora, slate quarry, chapel and other points of interest. Beautiful view of the Val Gelon on the way down. Directional signs on the ground complement this description. In addition, Lac Saint-Clair is a pleasant place to relax before or after the hike.
Sangle des Belles Ombres and Porte de l'Alpette
A wild and off-the-beaten-track hike linking the high-altitude ridge of Les Belles Ombres, where chamois frolic all year round, with the bucolic meadows of L’Alpette, where marmots abound.
This route is mainly off-trail and requires sure-footedness and a good sense of direction. It is unlikely that you will encounter other walkers, except at the Croix de l’Alpe and on the section of path leading there.
Col de l'Alpe via Sainte-Marie-du-Mont
This short hike leads to the Col de l'Alpe via the path used by cows going up and down from the mountain pasture.
From the Pas de la Rousse to the Col de Belles Ombres via the Croix de l'Alpe
A circular route along the eastern ridge of the Hauts de Chartreuse, combining a variety of terrain (rocks, forests, mountain pastures) with stunning views across the Alps. Can be completed in half a day, preferably in the morning.
Please note: read the information regarding the difficulties in the ‘Practical Information’ section carefully.
Route to the Sept Laux
A beautiful hike which, after leaving the forest, takes you to some superb lakes through a fairly rocky landscape.
Combe Madame refuge and Pissou waterfall
A good hike in the crystalline Belledonne massif, the Combe Madame refuge is not very high up, but it provides access to areas for experienced and hardy mountaineers.
Water is everywhere, lakes are nearby, wildlife inhabits the vertiginous slopes and hikers are treated to breathtaking views.
The Sept Laux from Fond-de-France
Hike between lakes and mountains around the Refuge des Sept Laux.
A circular on the heights of Chapareillan
A charming circular route in the hills above Chapareillan, facing Mont Blanc, between vineyards and forests, from village to village. This route, in the direction described, offers a long, gentle climb and ends with an hour-long descent, the first part of which is sustained without being very steep. A third of the route is on quiet tarmac roads, so 1 km of what I would call a tarmacGR®.
Please note: several hikers suggest doing the route in the opposite direction to climb the steepest part, especially if the ground is wet. In this case, a map and GPS are recommended as the description loses its usefulness.
Mont Granier via the Porte de l'Alpette and the Pas de la Porte
A very beautiful loop, much less frequented than the classic Mont Granier route, starting from the beautiful church of Bellecombe and particularly pleasant in summer.
After the Porte de l'Alpette, the hike runs along almost the entire cliff face of the mountain, passing through the magnificent "gardens" of the upper Alpette du Granier and returning to the Pas de la Porte pass overlooking the Grésivaudan valley.
