Le Crêt du Boeuf

This is a lovely walk which, although it occasionally passes close to ski lifts, is full of beautiful scenery. The views of the Pic de la Belle Etoile range are fabulous. And for those who enjoy downhill skiing in winter in the Sept Laux massif, it is great fun to see landscapes usually covered in a blanket of snow completely free of any trace of snow.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the left when coming from Allevard. This car park is located just before the small road on the left leading to La Martinette.

(S/E) Walk down the road for a few metres.

(1) Turn right onto a small path that climbs and ends in steps, roughly opposite (just after) the road leading to La Martinette. Turn right onto the small road and cross the D525A.

(2) At the “Fond de France” hiking sign, turn right towards Le Pleynet (signposted as 1 hour 15 minutes). Follow a path that climbs through the forest, heading south-west until you reach the Le Pleynet car park.

(3) At the corner of the Pincerie chairlift departure station, turn left and head up a grassy valley heading north-west.

(4) At the junction with a clearly visible path on the left, take a slightly hidden path on the right that leads into the undergrowth. Below the Crêt du Boeuf, join a forest track that is circular and follows the same route as the previous track. Follow the track for a few dozen metres.

(5) Turn right and climb up the grassy slope (no clearly marked path) then follow the ridge east-northeast to the Crêt du Boeuf.

(6) Retrace your steps, then continue at a leisurely pace south-westwards across the mountain pastures.

(7) Turn south to pass near the Pincerie chalet and join a forestry track. Follow this track straight on, keeping a southerly direction.

(8) At the Soleil ski lift, leave this track, which is circular and goes down to the left, and instead head straight on along a narrower path that runs alongside the slope. This path is marked with yellow markings that are not always very visible. Continue down for a few dozen metres (below the Aigle chairlift).

(9) Turn left to take another path marked with faint yellow markings along the slope (although parallel to the contour lines, this path ascends and descends from time to time) up to an altitude of approximately 1,860 metres.

(10) Pass under the Oursière chairlift.

(11) Once you reach the bottom of the valley, change your general direction of travel and head down towards the north-east. The yellow markings are still there, though still partially faded.

(12) Continue descending alongside a tiny stream and reach the Habert du Pra signpost.

(13) Follow the path on the left. Keep to the right at the next fork and continue along the path which, at around the 1600m mark, joins a forestry track.

(14) Turn right and follow this track to Le Pleynet.

(3) Turn right and return to the starting point via the same path you took on the way out (S/E).

A lovely walk that I’d highly recommend – it’s not difficult at all, apart from the start where I couldn’t find the narrow path. Just so you know, you need to follow the snowshoe trail.
I altered the return route from Le Pleynet to Le Fond de France by turning left when I reached the resort. The road is currently under construction but poses no problem for walkers, as it runs alongside the stream.

A very easy and pleasant walk.
A very warm welcome at the Chalet de la Pincerie. I highly recommend the homemade blueberry tart – delicious and generous.
The yellow markings, which were previously not very visible, have been repainted. The route markings are clearly visible all the way along.
Before reaching Combe du Pra, you’ll come across a wooden sculpture of a bear.

A wonderful walk in clear, sunny weather.
The start of the walk isn’t easy to find as it isn’t signposted...

The hike took place under overcast skies with only occasional breaks in the clouds, so it is not possible to describe the landscape;
signposting is sometimes missing where it would be useful. The IGN map is therefore essential once again. A compass too.
This route is very unique and you really don’t come across any tourists.
