A circular on the heights of Chapareillan

A charming circular route in the hills above Chapareillan, facing Mont Blanc, between vineyards and forests, from village to village. This route, in the direction described, offers a long, gentle climb and ends with an hour-long descent, the first part of which is sustained without being very steep. A third of the route is on quiet tarmac roads, so 1 km of what I would call a tarmacGR®.
Please note: several hikers suggest doing the route in the opposite direction to climb the steepest part, especially if the ground is wet. In this case, a map and GPS are recommended as the description loses its usefulness.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the car park behind Chapareillan church.
Yellow markings are clearly visible throughout.

(S/E) From the car park, walk with your back to the church and cross Chemin des Justes.

(1) At the next crossroads, turn right onto Chemin de l'Épitel and head towards the church in the town, which you can see in the distance. At the end of this path, turn right onto Rue des Gantières to arrive below the church in the town.

(2) At this crossroads, take Chemin des Buis opposite, then turn right onto Chemin des Rochettes, which becomes a dirt track and passes above the church on your right. Follow it.

(3) Cross the D285 further up, climb up and then cross a bridge on the right to join a horizontal tarmac road, the D285b, and follow it to the right (north) to La Palud.

(4) Cross the D285 and take Chemin de Joyan, descend to a four-way crossroads and turn left onto Chemin de la Croix, towards the vineyards. (Please note that this is not the crossroads with the fountain). When you reach a small memorial topped with a cross, go straight up. After a small hill, an interesting winegrower's hut appears on the right below. Join a tarmac road.

(5) Follow it to the left, climbing for 200 metres, then leave it for a path on the right. At the next fork, continue left (signposted Les Essarts de la Palud).

(6) At the Les Essarts de la Palud sign, turn left towards Les Martinons. Go straight ahead at the next crossroads, bordered by a beautiful field on your left, with a view of Mont Blanc. Then reach the hamlet of Les Martinons (beautiful stone buildings), turn left onto the tarmac road between the houses to rejoin the D285 (cross).

(7) Go down it on the left for 50 m and cross it to join a good horizontal path. Follow it for about 1 km to join another path and continue in the same direction to join the D285 road at Pont des Éparres (sign).

(8) Climb along this road on the right for about 1 km (yellow and red-whiteGR® markings) to reach Bellecombe.

(9) At the hiking sign, locate the Chemin du Barrioz on the left but continue for 100 m on the D285 to turn left towards the castle and the orientation table.

(10) Return to the hiking sign.

(9) Turn right towards Chapareillan onto Chemin du Barrioz, which becomes a wide path with a steep descent. After 600 m, you will reach a four-way intersection with no signs.

(11) Turn left. A yellow marker appears further down on a tree trunk. At the next crossroads, descend to the right onto a larger path. Continue downhill until you reach a tarmac road. Follow it downhill to thefirst crossroads you encountered on this hike.

(1) Continue towards Chapareillan Church (visible) and the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike with my 12-year-old son
We stopped three times and it took us 2 hours and 35 minutes. That's 2 hours and 12 minutes of walking.
Beautiful paths and stunning views. And, of course, our reward at the top: a clear view of Mont Blanc.
I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the route.

Hike completed in the "normal" direction, under bright sunshine and dry weather. The uphill section is fairly easy and very pleasant, except perhaps for the long climb on paved road towards the village of Bellecombe. I found the (very) long descent through the forest towards Chapareillan less interesting, with no clear views. Overall, I enjoyed this beautiful walk in the Savoyard countryside.

A beautiful hike on well-maintained trails in equally beautiful surroundings. Splendid views of all the surrounding mountain ranges of Isère and the two Savoie regions, particularly from the orientation table in the superb village of Bellecombe, with the added bonus of a view of Mont Blanc.

An easy and very pleasant hike, passing through charming little hamlets, walking along the edge of vineyards and through the undergrowth, with superb views of Mont Blanc, the Belledonne mountain range, the Bauges massif and the ever-imposing Granier.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Nice hike with some forest sections, but not too much. Views of the mountains. Avoid during rainy periods. The descent is quite steep.

We did this beautiful route in reverse.
The weather was beautiful and we had a magnificent 360° view of all the surrounding mountains.
We were very satisfied with our day.

Following the advice of a previous hiker, we walked the route in the opposite direction. We were very happy with this advice: the start is fairly gentle, allowing you to warm up gradually. The slope then becomes steeper below the hamlet of Bellecombe, and the slightly muddy section (which is short) is actually easier to walk up than down.
Beautiful views of the Isère valley, between Bauges and the other Savoyard mountains, with the majestic Mont Blanc in the background. A very good mid-season walk.

Nice hike uphill through woods and vineyards. The descent was a little less enjoyable, especially since I was on slippery ground today... So I found it long... and in the woods with no view. Maybe try it the other way around.
