Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Col d'Hurtières.

(S/E) Take the forest track that climbs gently towards the woods, behind the barrier blocking cars.

(1) When you reach a small path on the right, take a short detour into the field on the left to admire the view of the Chartreuse and the Grésivaudan valley, then rejoin the forest track.

(2) Continue straight on at this junction. See alternative route in the ‘Practical Information’ section.

(3) Not far from the Grange de Bel aux Airs, turn right onto the small path that leads into the forest. You’ll reach the meadow at the Grange de Couvet. Take a moment to breathe in the air; the view is idyllic. Continue straight on along the path, passing under the walnut trees to reach the hamlet of Les Berts. Turn slightly left onto the road and continue straight on.

(4) At the first junction, walk a few metres to the right to join the Chemin des Fauvettes (signposted). Follow this path out of the hamlet, then climb alongside a stream. When you reach the road, turn left and continue straight on through the bend to join a path.

(5) At the end of the track, continue straight on to descend onto the road, then follow it to the right.

(6) At the junction with the bins, turn right and cross the hamlet of Villard Bernard. As you leave the hamlet, enjoy the view of the Crêt de Chazay. Continue straight on to reach the Col d'Hurtières (S/E).

Notes

The path can be a bit muddy in places during snowmelt or heavy rain.

The walk passes several water sources where you can cool off or let your dog have a drink. The only source of drinking water is in the hamlet of Villard Bernard.

(2) Possible alternative route via the ridge to reach (5).

Worth a visit

In winter, at the Col d’Hurtières, sledge riders hurtle down the Crêt de Chazay.
In summer, the moderate altitude, the forest and the streams provide a cool respite.
You’ll come across donkeys, cows, pygmy goats and sheep.
With a gentle gradient and varied scenery, this walk is very popular with children.

A lovely little 3-hour walk, taking it slowly and stopping for a bite to eat
As other users have mentioned, the path can be quite muddy in places, although it was mostly frozen at this time of year.
We managed it without any special equipment.
Lovely views.
Note regarding point 3: you must turn properly when you see the barn, at the ‘Tour de Bel Aux Airs’ sign, as we turned too early.
Please note, we came across some hunters, although they were very friendly.

A lovely, easy, family-friendly route. The signposting was generally very good, except in the village on the way back where there was a sign for bins; we turned at the ‘wrong’ bins and ended up on private property, but it wasn’t a big deal. You need to wait until the second set of bins before turning right.

The description mentioned a barn, which we found, but the path near the barn didn’t exist.
So a little further on, we turned back.

A pleasant, relatively easy and varied walk through the woodland, with some lovely views. We chose to take the alternative route along the ridge. It adds just 100 metres of elevation gain. The only difficulties on this route are the mud (which you can work your way around) and the large fallen trees blocking the path (which you can also work your way around or crawl under).

A lovely walk with varied scenery, easy to manage and enjoyed with children who loved seeing the animals.
At point 5, there was some confusion about which route to take, as the path runs to the right and slightly below a property, the perimeter of which is lined with numerous ‘private property’ signs discouraging people from using the path...
