Circular route from Château du Touvet to Château du Montalieu

An easy circular route, half through woodland and half along small tarmac roads, from one castle to another. This circular route can be combined with another circular route, from the fortified house of La Frette to Château du Touvet.

Description of the walk

At Le Touvet, take the tree-lined road leading up to Château du Touvet, pass the castle entrance and park 150 m further on, at the crossroads; there are four to five spaces available before the bridge (which is very narrow). Alternatively, park in the hamlet of Le Vivier by turning left at this crossroads.

(S/E) Head to the hamlet of Le Vivier and follow the Chemin des Fontaines, which becomes a good path climbing gently. Reach a stream and follow it up the right bank.

(1) Cross the footbridge and continue along the flat path towards the old church or Montalieu. Ignore the side paths leading uphill to the left.

(2) Above the old church of Saint-Vincent de Mercuze, take the path on the left, which climbs steadily. Follow this undulating path.

(3) On reaching Montalieu, above the torrent, turn left onto the Chemin d’Autrefois, which descends for a few dozen metres before climbing back up the Ruisseau d’Alloix via several footbridges.
At the ruins of a mill on the left bank, leave the gorge via a path climbing to the right. Join a wider path and descend, turning right. It soon leaves the gorges to reach the village of Montalieu on the left bank.

(4) Walk down the tarmac road to the pretty wash house and retrace your steps for 30 m before turning left and crossing over the stream, 50 m upstream of the bridge on the D9 road. Follow the straight, level path.

(5) At the White Cross, head slightly uphill to the right to continue along the small tarmac road which climbs gently towards the old church mentioned.
Take the path that descends below the old church and head towards the town hall of Saint-Vincent-de-Mercuze.

(6) Pass the town hall on your right and continue straight ahead; then, 150 m further on, climb 10 m to the right and continue straight ahead, cross a narrow bridge and reach the car park (S/E), or the hamlet of Le Vivier, which is 100 m beyond the bridge.

Very pleasant parish-specific to Brittany walk with no major difficulties except for the climb to the waterfall. Lovely views along a fairly short route.

A lovely little walk with plenty of interesting sights: two streams, two castles, two churches. The only slightly tricky bit is the Alloix stream after point 3, with its large boulders, but iron arches have been installed in some places.

Hike completed on Monday 17 March 2025; we didn’t come across a single other hiker; there was plenty of water; we climbed higher than described on Visorando, all the way to the large waterfall; this final section is more challenging, although well-marked, which might make it a ‘moderate’ difficulty.
A minor difficulty at the start: the map does not quite match the description, though this was not a real problem in finding the route. There are numerous clearly visible markers.
We think the route described in Visorando must be very busy in the summer months.

A very beautiful hike with varied scenery, BUT: between points 3 and 4, you have to walk alongside the stream, which was raging at this time of year. The rocks were extremely slippery; there are ladders and cables above this raging stream. The season wasn’t ideal for this section of the route. Furthermore, rocks were falling from the cliff, dragging trees down with them. I strongly advise against taking young children at this time of year, but it is possible to shorten the walk by going from point 3 to point 5. It remains a very lovely walk.
Thank you to everyone who keeps Visorando alive by posting such interesting hiking routes.

A really lovely walk. Best done in winter when the weather is fine, for a number of reasons.
- People are out skiing, so the paths in the valley are fairly deserted
- With no leaves on the trees, we have a constant, beautiful view of the Belledonne.
- It’s best to go in the morning as it’s in full sun.
