Description of the walk

Barraux church car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head south towards the Chemin du Replat, keeping to the right.

(1) Take the road, which turns into a path, climbing gently above the Barraux plateau to the fork before the (dry) Dégoutés stream.

(2) This is the most difficult part of the circular route. Take a well-signposted path on the right, a steep, direct climb with a view of the Rochers de Saint-Georges, then arrive at the village of the same name.

(3) In the village, turn right onto the D282, which you follow for the entire stretch across the plateau, facing the Rochers de l’Alpe, until you reach Saint-Marcel d’en Haut.

(4) Continue to the right on the D285, pass a large livestock farm and reach a junction 200 m further on.

(5) Descent route: turn right onto a path leading towards Saint-Marcel d’en-bas. Immediately afterwards (100 m), turn right onto a wide path leading towards Barraux, via the Cascade du Furet.

(6) Near the Cascade du Furet, cross the Ruisseau du Furet, continue towards Barraux and arrive at the church (S/E).

A beautiful view between Saint-Georges and Saint-Marcel-d'en-Haut.
During this wet spell, the ground is slippery around point 6 and on the route to and from the Cascade du Furet.
Between point 5 and point 1, the times indicated on the yellow signs are inaccurate.

We followed the path up to St Georges, which was easy but quite steep; once at the top, we took Rue des Lodges and decided against taking the road route indicated on the itinerary. We also decided against the suggested alternative of a more direct path: we were advised against it, as the ground was wet and muddy and the path very steep. We made our way back down, turning left onto the flat stone path, which was wider and well signposted. This path (a very long descent) took us back towards Le Boissieu. When the yellow sign at Le Boissieu indicated an altitude of 500m, we left this path, took the track on the left through the forest towards Barraux (marked at 0h50 and 512m) in order to rejoin our original route. But we hadn’t anticipated that we would have to climb back up about 200m before descending to Barraux. We are slow (70-year-olds) and arrived after dark
It was a longer but safer route, as the ground was slippery, damp and muddy.
It’s not a spectacular hike, but it’s pleasant and wild
At Saint Georges, there is a beautiful view of Belledonne and Mont Blanc

A pleasant walk, though without many interesting views; a few steep climbs, always through woodland, accompanied by birdsong (lovely); the Furet waterfall is well worth a visit, though it’s a short detour from the main route.

Most of this route is through woodland, so there aren’t many views of the valley or the Belledonne range; then there’s a 3 km stretch of tarmac road, and the path to the waterfall isn’t great! As for the waterfall itself, given the drought, it’s not worth the climb to see it up close.
Best done on a route in small groups and in dry weather.
A shame about the view, but it’s a great workout for the legs!

We went on the hike yesterday. The climb was, indeed, quite steep, but the path is very pleasant. It’s very well marked in yellow. The route isn’t quite the same as on the “Visorando” map, but that isn’t a problem. Once we reached the plateau, we immediately turned right (yellow markings). We were glad not to be walking along the main road. This path is very well marked. However, when we reached the place known as “Les Combes” (909m above sea level), the sign for “Barraux” indicated a 30-minute walk. It’s more like an hour. We chose this route to avoid having to go back up the main road. So we didn’t go past the Cascade du Furet. A very lovely walk.
