Between Clara and Taurinya
A beautiful and easy hike open to all in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park, which will allow you to discover the villages of Clara and Taurinya.
The starting point is in the car park opposite the Church of Saint-Martin in Clara.
Pic du Canigou
If there is one peak to climb in Catalonia, it is Canigou (the Catalan Olympus). Rising to 2,784.66 metres, it offers exceptional views from the summit, where there is an orientation table.
The former Salver Mining Site - Torre Corts from St-Michel de Cuxa
Hike from pass to pass from the Abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuxa.
Pass through the old Salver mining site then on to the Cours tower.
The hike itself is not difficult, but a very good sense of direction, good terrain reading skills, the route on the app or GPS and the description are essential.
Variations are possible: see § Practical information.
Circular loop starting from Fillols
A beautiful hike in the forest with many different species of trees. A ridge trail from one pass to another. Fairly varied terrain offering beautiful views of Canigou, Tres Estelles and Madrès. A visit to the beautifully restored orri (stone hut) at Coll de Tuja and Clot de Baladres.
Roc de la Collada via the Chapel of Saint-Étienne de Pomers
A little-visited but very pleasant area, in winter or early spring when the Canigou is covered in snow.
The trail is mostly signposted and very well marked.
Double circular route between Villerach and Llonat
A walk beneath Canigou with views of the villages on the left bank of the Têt. You will pass a dolmen and the ruins of the church in the old village. No difficulty. Suitable in all seasons.
Codalet, Salver mining site and Saint-Michel de Cuxa Abbey
A pleasant hike in Conflent Roman, on trails partly through the woods, around the Taurinya valley, where the Abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuxa (10th and 12th centuries), one of the largest pre-Romanesque churches in Europe, is nestled. See also the impressive siphon of the Bohère Canal and, at the foot of Canigou, the former Salver de Taurinya mining site. Several viewpoints over the valley and the Canigou massif.
Tour of the chapels from Ria-Syrach
Hike on good trails that allow you to discover mountain chapels. Beautiful views of the Madres Massif. A visit to Conat is also interesting.
The only difficulty is above Saint-Christophe Chapel: the trail is unmarked and sometimes difficult to see. It is necessary to know how to use a map and compass and/or how to follow a GPS track.
However, it is possible to avoid this section and shorten the hike by connecting the points (3) to (9).
The Ribera de Fillols, Le Coll de Milleres, Fillols from Corneilla
A day hike from Corneilla-de-Conflent. The total elevation gain is approximately 785 m.Do not underestimate this hike. The slope is very steep from the start. From Coll de Juell (6) to the fork (7), the balcony path allows you to enjoy the landscape of the Canigó massif. The path to Ribera de Fillols and up to the track is very beautiful. The green path from Coll de Milleres to Fillols and then the descent to Corneilla are very pleasant. The GPX track may be necessary in some places.
Mas Malet loop to the Refuge des Cortalets
This two-day hike, with an overnight stay at the Refuge des Cortalets, allows for one or more alternative routes each day, depending on the weather or your needs. The route is fully signposted. The suggested alternatives stay on the signposted paths or tracks, so there is no risk of getting lost.
In addition, on thefirst day (upon arrival) or thesecond day (before descending): the ascent of Pic del Canigó (a round trip from the refuge).
Access details are provided at the start of the description for the first stage.
⚠️ Works at the Cortalets refuge in 2026, 2027 and 2028. Renovation of the Cortalets refuge; the Cortalets refuge is closed for works.
Mas Malet - Cortalets via Roc Mosquit, Ras dels Cortalets
First stage of the circular route from Mas Malet to the Refuge des Cortalets. Ascent to Les Cortalets via little-used paths, marked with directional posts that are present and in very good condition (as of July 2025). This is an alternative route through the forest, sheltered from the intense heat, and above all featuring a steady climb with beautiful views.
The only drawback is the access to the start via a recently resurfaced track suitable for vehicles (as of July 2025) up to Coll del Forn. After that, driving carefully, you’ll reach the car park without any trouble. It’s clear that a very low-slung car risks scraping the ground.
⚠️ Works at the Cortalets refuge in 2026, 2027 and 2028. Renovation of the Cortalets refuge; Cortalets refuge closed for works
Around Corneilla-de-Conflent via Fillols
A pleasant circular that allows you to take a break at the Fillols bistro. A few shaded sections make it enjoyable in all seasons. No difficulty. Only a small broken bridge over the stream at the start may deter the less agile.
Circular Canigou Loop starting from Vernet-les-Bains
The legendary mountain of Roussillon has always held a great appeal for hikers. The Canigou fascinates some and frightens others. From the Refuge des Cortalets, the ascent is fairly easy. But starting from Vernet-les-Bains, at a lower altitude, this route is aimed at experienced hikers who are not put off by the elevation gain. The magnificent panorama from the summit and the subtle landscapes along the entire route reinforce, step by step, the pleasure of walking in these surroundings.
From Ria to Conat via Bell Lloc Chapel
Starting from Ria, this route, in the foothills of the Coronat massif, leads to the discovery of a major site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
All that remains of the old abandoned village of Bell Lloc or Beau Site are a few house foundations and the12th-century Romanesque chapel of Sant-Andreu-de-Bell-Lloc, which is very well preserved and offers wonderful views of the Canigou massif and the surrounding valleys.
The Conat Nature Reserve is a regulated area; picking, gathering and damaging the site are prohibited, and visitors must respect the site.
A easy route.
Henri Barbusse memorial, Cogulló, then the Juell, Vell and Eusebi passes
The only place in the region where there was no wind! We were able to walk all day without a breath of wind, whilst everywhere else, gusts of over 100 km/h were sweeping across the mountains. Incredible! On the other hand, there are quite a few trees blocking the paths, which sometimes makes progress difficult or tedious. Nevertheless, a lovely hike despite the final section being entirely on track.
The Vernet-les-Bains waterfalls
A beautiful, refreshing family hike with three stunning waterfalls, including the Cascade des Anglais as a reward.
Vernet-les-Bains: Pic Cogollo, circular return
A lovely, uncrowded hike above Vernet-les-Bains. Pass above the waterfalls and flirt with the access routes to Canigou.
Historical route above Villefranche-de-Conflent
This route allows you to discover military remains (Vauban's cistern and redoubt) as well as former ore quarries (marble, manganese and talc) and, above all, superb panoramic views of the Têt and Cady valleys. You can also see Villefranche-de-Conflent and Fort Libéria from above.
This is a fairly easy hike, but don't underestimate the length.
Pic de la Pena
A half-day hike offering superb views of Canigou and the surroundings of Vernet-les-Bains. You will also see the Church of Saint-Martin du Canigou nestled in its setting. The longer version of this route can be extended to Torre de Goa, returning via the path marked on the map on the western side, or by going to Colle de Jou and descending via the correc del coll de Jou and Casteil.
Cascade des Anglais via Coll de Lloseta
A very beautiful hike, partly on marked trails. The route includes a circular path on the map that is not marked, where the descent to the Cascade des Anglais is very steep for 100 metres and should not be attempted if it is raining or still wet. In case of bad weather, plan to descend via the usual trail.
The Tour de Goa circular from Vernet-les-Bains
A fairly challenging hike leading to the Tour de Goa, a listed historical monument. A breathtaking panoramic view from the ridges between the Pic de la Péna and the Tour à Signaux. And an incredible 360° view from the Tour de Goa with an orientation table.
The Tower of Goa (Torre de Goà) from Vernet-les-Bains
A very pretty hike that takes you to this beautiful restored tower and its stunning views.
No particular difficulties.
The GPX track may be useful, particularly from (S/E) to (6).
La Cicerola from Vernet-les-Bains
A beautiful and challenging hike above Vernet-les-Bains. I have classified this hike as difficult due to its significant gradient (900 m over 5 km) and paths that are sometimes difficult in certain places.
Tricky section at the Font del Bac dels Monjos (5) and difficult right up to (6).
From Vernet-les-Bains to Corneilla-de-Conflent
This hike takes us from Vernet-les-Bains to Corneilla-de-Conflent, a pretty route between the hills and the valley, part of which is through wooded areas. We pass a well-preserved dolmen and can take our time to visit the village of Corneilla-de-Conflent with its Romanesque church. At the end of the route, I suggest you take a look at an unusual wash house.
Casteil - Mariailles Refuge
First stage of the Three Days on Canigou.
This climb to the Mariailles Refuge allows you to discover a magnificent water supply channel.
Three days at Canigou
Three-day circular hike starting from Casteil.
It takes you up to Mariailles via an old water channel, up the Canigou via the chimney, and back to Casteil via pretty, uncrowded paths.
Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey
A very classic walk to Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey, an easy route, but very popular.
The route is shaded and very pleasant. It is suitable for vehicles and pushchairs.
The abbey is nestled in a beautiful setting and is well worth a visit.
Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey loop
A pleasant circular walk starting from Casteil. The climb is steep on a rough path to the abbey and a viewpoint.
The path is then flat until you reach the Saint-Benoît Chapel, which offers a magnificent view of Vernet-les-Bains.
The return journey is on a paved road that descends past the Saint-Martin le Vieux Chapel.
Cortalets - Mas Malet via Prat-Cabrera, La Mouline, Chemin des Muletiers
Second stage of the Mas Malet loop to the Refuge des Cortalets. Return (descent) to Mas Malet via little-used paths, marked with directional posts (as of July 2025).
Allow around 5 hours for the walk. The GPX track may prove very useful in places. Please note: classified as difficult, with a descent of over 1,500 m, but sheltered from the heat and offering beautiful views and refuges.
The only drawback is undoubtedly the climb back up to follow the beautiful Chemin des Muletiers from La Mouline (15). There is an alternative route that avoids this by descending via the track. Another more radical alternative is to descend only via the track from (9) to (E).
Refuge des Cortalets - Casteil
Third stage of the Three Days at Canigou.
A very pleasant return to the starting point of these three days via old, little-used paths.
This hike is classified as difficult because it involves a 1,650-metre descent, with a steep slope over a little more than two kilometres. Allow at least five hours of walking.
From Cortalets to Mariailles via the Barbet ridges and the Moura hut
Variation of a mountain stage that is part of theGR®®36.This way of connecting the two refuges allows you to avoid the crowds. The path from the Cabane de Moura to Coll del Cavall Mort is quite challenging.Read practical information in case of bad weather.
Pic du Canigou - From the Cortalets Refuge to Los Masos
This is the continuation of the Pic du Canigou - Los Masos hike from the Refuge des Cortalets. It passes through the Crêtes du Barbet, the Portella de Vallmanya, the Brèche Durier, the Pic del Canigó, the Refuge des Cortalets and ends at Los Masos.
Pass through the chimney as the yellow markings have been erased - path closed (not recommended).
See practical information below.
Refuge des Cortalets - Refuge de Mariailles via Canigou
This day is devoted to the ascent of Pic du Canigou from the Refuge des Cortalets, and the descent via the chimney to the Refuge Arago, then to Mariailles, the starting point of the hike.
