Park in the car park on Rue du Canigou in the village of Casteil next to the cemetery.
(S/E) Leave the car park and follow Rue du Canigou until the first fork.
(1) Continue straight ahead, passing the Saint-Martin Church, which is open. At the next fork, continue on the road that climbs to the left at the tourist office.
(2) Follow the signs for Abbaye St Martin du Canigou, taking the path that climbs up to the left. Pay attention to the white and yellow PR® markings. At the next fork, continue climbing to the left. The forest path climbs steeply until you reach the abbey. Be careful, as the ground is slippery and uneven.
Do not go onto the Gorges de Cady footbridge.
Cross the river on your left to return to the side of the abbey.
Follow thePR® markings, which are not always very visible. You will then discover the Abbey of Saint-Martin du Canigou. Guided tours are available and last approximately one hour (please check the times on the website).
(3) There is a splendid view overlooking the abbey. Retrace your steps and turn right towards the chapel. On the way, you will find a refuge, water and a hot drinks machine.
(4) Arrive at the Saint-Benoît Chapel. Picnic table with a view of Vernet-les-Bains, Casteil and the Tower of Goa. Return towards the Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey.
(3) Take the road downhill (Chemin de l'Abbaye). This is an interesting point in the history of the Saint-Martin le Vieux Chapel, which is directly linked to the abbey. Follow the winding path to reach the Church of Saint-Martin.
(1) Turn right after passing the barrier at the bottom of the road and continue towards the car park on the right (S/E).
