Park in the car park on Rue du Canigou in the village of Casteil, next to the cemetery.
(S/E) Leave the car park and follow Rue du Canigou to the first junction.
(1) Continue straight ahead, passing in front of the open Saint-Martin Church. At the next fork, take the road that climbs to the left at the tourist information office.
(2) Head towards St Martin du Canigou Abbey by taking the path that climbs to the left. Look out for the white and yellow PR®® markings. At the next fork, continue climbing to the left. The forest path climbs steeply all the way to the abbey. Be careful, the ground is slippery and uneven.
Do not take the footbridge over the Gorges de Cady.
Cross the river on your left to reach the slope leading up to the abbey.
Make sure you follow thePR®® markings, which are not always very visible. You will then discover the Abbey of Saint-Martin du Canigou. Guided tours of around one hour are available (please note: check the timetables on the website).
(3) Splendid viewpoint overlooking the abbey. Retrace your steps and head right, towards the chapel. On the way, you’ll find a shelter, water and a hot drinks machine.
(4) Arrive at Saint-Benoît Chapel. Picnic table with views of Vernet-les-Bains, Casteil and the Tour de Goa. Head back towards Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey.
(3) Take the road leading down (Chemin de l’Abbaye). An interesting historical point regarding the history of the Chapel of Saint-Martin le Vieux, which is directly linked to the abbey. Follow the winding path to reach the Church of Saint-Martin.
(1) Turn right after passing the barrier at the bottom of the road, then continue towards the car park on the right (S/E).
