From Perpignan, head towards Andorra on the N 116 dual carriageway. After Ille-sur-Têt, the road becomes single carriageway. Pass through Prades, then at the roundabout in Villefranche-de-Conflent, turn left towards Coneilla-de-Conflent on the D 116. After 2.5 km, in Corneilla, turn left onto the D 47 towards Fillols. After 350 m, you will quickly see the town hall car park on your right.
(S/E) Opposite the town hall entrance, turn left towards the large playground. Keep to the right of the mini handball court fence.
At the end of the playground, facing the hill, climb a few concrete steps and then turn right, heading west, onto a small path that covers a stream for 150 m.
(1) Go up to the left into the forest, following a well-marked trail with a very steep slope. From this point, head south-east until you reach the Coll de la Truja.
Join a track and follow it to the left for 100 m.
(2) At the fork in the three tracks, take the left-hand track, climbing steeply, heading south-east, following the Planes ridge through the spruce forest. The track then descends to Coll de Sant Eusebi.
(3) At this pass, at an altitude of 795 metres, there is a steel bench on the right. Cross the D 27 road. There is little traffic.
Turn right/left onto the road and pick up the trail opposite, which climbs steeply again.
The track becomes a good path and descends towards Coll Vell (the old Fillols pass).
(4) At this crossroads, at an altitude of 845 metres, cross the GRP® Ronde du Canigou. Continue climbing again along a good path. Then descend slightly towards Coll de la Truja (the sow) at around 865 metres.
(5) Leave the path on the left that descends. Continue straight ahead on flat ground. Excavations from the old mines are still clearly visible. Pass an orri on your right. The path then climbs again.
At the top, at around 915 m, leave the path on the left that descends. Continue to the right and then descend steeply towards Coll de Juell.
(6) At this wide, flat spot at an elevation of 899 metres, be careful: the IGN map is confusing. The OSM map is clearer because it shows the crossroads and fork ahead.
Cross the crossroads and 30 m further on, at the fork, turn right, heading south, onto the Circuit des Crêtes.
A yellow and white sign in good condition may help.
The beautiful path turns left at a 90° angle and winds its way eastwards. The view is magnificent.
Cross an area with a handrail and wooden steps. After heading north-east, the path arrives at a fork at around 1,045 m. Directional signpost.
(7) Descend to the left on the correct path and reach a new fork at around 990 m. Directional posts.
(8) Turn right, 90°, towards the east, in the direction of Coll dels Voltes. Cross a first stream (torrent) and pass a ruined hut.
Then descend steeply along a beautiful stony path to Ribera de Fillols.
The passage can be difficult after heavy rain or in spring. *
Fork right, following the signs for Coll dels Voltes.
A steel plaque is affixed to the rock on the right, indicating an altitude of 1,046 metres.
(9) Follow the unmaintained and prohibited track to the right, heading north. 150 m further on, at the fork, leave the path to the Coll dels Voltes on your right. There is a spring just after this point. Continue for 600 m on this track until you reach an elevation of 1103 m.
Please note: you will need to leave the track.
(10) Look for two cairns that I reinforced when I passed through.
Go down completely to the left along a pretty path with beautiful views. Then cross the track three times. I have replaced the cairns at the intersections. A recent signpost has been put up at one of the intersections.
When you reach the track for the fourth time, follow it downhill to the left. Stay on this wide track, which heads north downhill to the Coll de Millères.
This is a good place to take a well-deserved break. There is a small family campsite here.
Return to the end of the tarmac road and follow it to the left onto the GRP® Ronde du Canigou, keeping the campsite on your left.
(11) At the corner of the charming campsite surrounded by nature, at an altitude of 843 metres, turn left, then 90° and take a magnificent path lined with stone walls. At the gate, continue to the right. Look out for the red and yellow GRP® markings and follow them. You will come to a road at the entrance to Fillos and turn left, still on the GRP®. Make a right turn. Cross the Route de Taurinya (D 27). The town hall is opposite, on the right. Continue downhill along the river via Carrer del Riu (Rue du ruisseau). See During the hike or nearby.
(12) Two hundred metres further on, leave the GRP® on your left. Continue straight ahead on Cami Vell (the old path), with the river on your left and the Route de Corneilla on your right (D 47). This pleasant old path crosses the Ribera de Fillols and winds its way through beautiful pastures and small converted huts.
Reach the main street of Corneilla (D 47) and continue for a few metres to return to the car park (S/E).
