Start from Vernet-les-Bains, a charming village that is also worth a visit. The part of the village below the church is very charming with its pedestrianised streets.
The route is described from a car park at the entrance to the village, but there are plenty of parking spaces along the Cadi.
(S/E) Follow the El Cadi river and then cross it, turning right onto the Pont Louis Noguères bridge. Take the Avenue des Mines for about 200 metres.
(1) Turn left onto Chemin de la Pena, which is signposted. When you reach the campsite entrance on your left, continue straight ahead on the path that climbs uphill. It is well marked. After 150 metres, you will see the stream on your left. Cross it and continue a little further, leaving theGRP®® Ronde du Canigou trail on your right and climbing up the hillside.
(2) 200 metres after crossing the stream, the path turns 90° to the left and climbs steeply. Straight ahead, a few branches seem to indicate the direction to take.
Follow them and take a 200m detour to see a dry stone hut, which an enthusiast protects from the ravages of time by removing the branches and trees that grow on it. It is a remnant of the habitat in this area. Return to the path and continue the ascent. There are no orientation issues, but the path climbs steeply and you will be rewarded for your efforts.
(3) The view is superb, and you will have no trouble finding Canigou (weather permitting). For Saint-Martin du Canigou, look for the church tower in the south-east (131°). Continue and take the ridge path to Puig de la Falguerosa.
(4) To return, descend by taking a ridge path on the right that runs north-west for about 100m, then veers west-south-west (255°) for about 300m.
(5) At an altitude of 1,005 m, you will find a larger path which you should take northwards (to the right).
(6) Pass the Coll de les Manxes. Continue along this path until you reach a track, 100m south-east below the antennas.
(7) Take the path on the right, which heads due east and descends towards Vernet. Follow this track for 1.7km until you reach an altitude of 700m. You will then be 100m from the D27 road.
Take the grassy path for as long as possible to avoid walking on the road (D27 = Route de Sahorre).
(1) Finish on the road, which fortunately has little traffic, and head to Pont de Noguères, then your starting point (S/E).
