Ispoure walks

A lovely walk that takes you through a variety of landscapes, including open tracks, forest, pastures and, finally, vineyards.

You will discover an oak forest and pass through the Irouleguy vineyard with a panoramic view of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and its surroundings. A very pleasant hike that will take you to the Pic de l'Arradoy. The small flower-lined path leading up to it is very pleasant before entering the damp, cool forest. Very pleasant in spring and summer as the hike is mostly shaded.

A hike around Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to discover a unique feature of Basque architecture in this part of Navarre, then share a "piece of the journey" with pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Even if you are not a pilgrim on your way to Compostela, you will enjoy this pretty little tourist town in Lower Navarre, built on the banks of the Nive de Béhérobie. Let me give you a little guided tour.

The forty-sixth stage of the Camino de Santiago. A physically demanding stage, featuring the ascent of the Pyrenees, splendid views of the surrounding Basque Country if the weather permits, free-roaming herds, a sense of being high up, and the excitement of crossing into Spain. After a long, steep descent, you arrive at the Monastery of Roncesvalles. Given the altitude of the finish point and the cool temperatures, I preferred the monastery dormitory to camping. From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a whole new journey begins. The landscapes are no longer the same, nor are the pilgrims. From here on, there are ten times as many people on the paths. Very few French people and lots of Koreans, Australians, Americans, Filipinos and, of course, Spaniards. From here on, you have to speak Spanish or English or use Google Translate. But you always manage to make yourself understood and get by. That’s the magic of the Camino de Santiago.

Step back in time as you discover a unique heritage, walking along centuries-old cobblestones and enjoying the view of the Pyrenees – this is how you’ll discover the authentic town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. I visited this town at the end of the final French stage of my Camino de Santiago, after 47 days of walking.

A circular route to climb Pic d’Arradoy, starting from the orientation table and passing via the Chemin du Génie

This route is also known as Elurti. It allows you to discover the Artxuita dolmen from the village of Ascarat.

The Muhnoa is a magnificent 360° viewpoint. Most of the climb is on a gentle slope of about 10%. The last 1,400 metres become more difficult, but the reward is at the end.

This lovely circular route starting from Lasse follows part of theGR®10route. The signpost describes this route as offering "Unbeatable views of the citadel of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port".

A sublime hike along part of the historic Way of St James. The weight of history is on your shoulders, but it feels light as the arrival at the Virgin of Orisson is so beautiful. A long climb on unpaved ground with a steady slope through the summer pastures of the Basque Country does not spoil the pleasure, especially as the path is shaded.

A pleasant hike of moderate difficulty, except for the final climb up Munhoa, which is quite steep. Magnificent views of the Basque Country landscape. The outward leg of the hike follows the GR®10 to the Col d'Urdanzia. The return leg is not marked, so we recommend using the Visorando app.

A beautiful hike along an oldPR® trail, which is unfortunately no longer well marked. The return journey is on gentler slopes than the outward journey. The end of the route crosses the vineyards of Irouleguy.

Circular loop through the Irouléguy vineyards. On a sign in front of the church, this route is described under the title "Menta: trail showcasing the unique characteristics of the Irouléguy vineyards". Surrounded by stunning peaks and offering a peaceful atmosphere, this is an easy walk suitable for the whole family.

This is a beautiful hike that takes you around the Guermiette valley via Munhoa and the Urdanzia and Leizartzeko passes. Once you reach the Ahartzako Pass, those with the most stamina can climb up to the Olharandoï Chapel or continue along the hillside following theGR®10.

A circular route through the hills around Ahaize. If you’re lucky enough to do this route in autumn, the colours are splendid.

A beautiful walk that crosses three promontories with stunning views.

From the Nive de Béhérobie in Estérençuby, head up one of its tributaries, the Bihurriko Erreka, to discover the peaceful heights where shepherds and their sheep reign supreme. The Azketa huts are inhabited during the summer grazing season. They shelter beautiful Basque-Béarnaise horned sheep. These pastures are also popular with pottoks, the small Basque horses.

The Iramendy ridge is bristling with poudingue peaks (conglomerate of round pebbles). From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, this gives it the appearance of a dinosaur. Climbing to the summit via this ridge from north to south requires a bit of scrambling (level 2 lower). The proposed hike climbs to the summit via the other ridge. No difficulties other than the total elevation gain and a few steep sections. Magnificent 360° view of the surrounding mountains.

A challenging walk offering unrivalled views of the valley from the top of the Okoxtei vineyards. The walk takes you through the forest and then along the edge of vineyard plots before returning to Otikoren. - A paper map of the walk is available at the La Cave d’Irouléguy shop -

A hike for the fit and active. Starting from La Cave, hikers take the track from Leispars to reach Soramehaka along the vineyards. Head towards Mignaberry and then descend to Eiheralde, where they cross the bridge to reach Otikoren via the vineyards. - A paper map of the hike is available at the La Cave d'Irouléguy shop -

A short walk for families or those who don’t have much time to spend hiking. Walkers pass through the forest of the old quarry and head up towards Oronozia, where they can enjoy the vineyards overlooking the village and Etxauzia Castle. The return route goes via Iparraguerre and then through the village. - A paper map of the walk is available at the La Cave d'Irouléguy shop -

Magnificent climb to Jara with breathtaking views of Larla, Iparla, Buztanzelai and Autza and, to the north, the ridges of Haltzamendi and Baigura. A variety of paths, almost always in the open, ending with a cornice path overlooking the Landes plain. Arrival at the summit with a 360° view of the peaks of the Basque Country and Béarn. A pleasant picnic area awaits us there.

The Larla can be climbed from several points. This circular walk is slightly longer than the others and has a greater elevation gain. Despite this difficulty, the walk remains very pleasant and offers, as is often the case in the Basque Country, magnificent views.

Oilarandoi is a magnificent viewpoint overlooking all the surrounding peaks. The nearby Munhoa and, further away, Iparla, Autza, Adarza and many others. At the summit, there was originally a hermitage, which was occupied from 1706 to 1792. The ruins were rebuilt twice, in 1941 and 1985. This hike includes sections with significant gradients of between 30 and 40%, but the reward is at the end and the view from the summit is well worth the effort.

This beautiful hike offers 360° views of many of the peaks of the Basque Country.

A very pleasant hike, not very difficult but offering magnificent views all along the route and, of course, at the summit: a 360° panorama. To the north-west, the coast and its towns, with Baigura and Ursuya in the foreground. To the west, Iparla. To the south-west, Jara with its antennas. To the south, Orhi and Bearn with the Pics d'Anie and Ossau.

A lovely ridge route with beautiful views of the Iparla ridges, amongst others. Sometimes off-trail, so requires good visibility and a good understanding of the terrain.Best done in winter or spring to avoid invasive ferns, especially on the descent from (10) to (13).

The climb to Haltzamendi is a truly enjoyable hike. Without any particular difficulties, it offers varied landscapes. From the summit, a splendid viewpoint, we have a bird's eye view of the eastern ridges of Baïgura.

A very pretty circular route that follows the French-Spanish border ridge, passing through three passes.A very well-marked red and white path on the Spanish side allows you to pass below the ridges (for those prone to vertigo). The markings can be helpful, but they change over time due to privatisation, diversions, temporary closures, etc. This circular may be difficult for some people.

This hike allows you to admire the Basque landscape, shaped by man over many centuries.

A beautiful circular route at the foot of the Iparla cliffs to the Col d’Harrieta, where you cross over to the Spanish side into a majestic landscape with the Astate (1022 m) and the Buztanzelhai (1029 m) to the south, the Gorra range (1074 m) opposite, and to the north, Toutoulia (987 m) and Iparla (1049 m).

A superb circuit that passes in front of the Gapelu amphitheatre (one of the most majestic sites in the Basque Country according to Miguel Angulo) and through the Col d'Iparla, which is a tough climb but is rewarded on reaching the ridges with a vast panorama stretching from the sea to the peaks of Orhy and Anie...

This is a beautiful hike that allows you to discover the Iparla ridges without having to climb the various peaks.

Climb to the Pic d'Iparla to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pyrenees mountain range, as well as the ocean and the distant beaches of the Landes.

Le Larla, 705 m, is a magnificent viewpoint over the mountains surrounding Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry, Saint-Jean-Pie-de-Port and the entire eastern face of Iparla with its majestic ridge.

Every autumn, the Col d'Urtzategiak is gripped by ‘blue fever’. It affects a large part of the local population. The hunters are all perched on the ridges, in the trees, watching for the migration of the wood pigeon.

Here is a possible route for hiking the Iparla ridges! Please note that this is a fairly strenuous hike, especially the final "ascent" of the ridges.

This hike to the summit of Larla from Satali avoids the steep climb from Saint-Martin-d'Arrossa. You can learn about the mining activity that once took place here and enjoy superb views of the surrounding peaks.

The D'esternguibel valley is a wild site in Lower Navarre. Its steep sides are bristling with ridges and peaks. Iraukotuturu is the highest peak. To reach it, head for the Errékaxaro pass and from there follow a path carved into the rock in places, which was once used for transhumance of sheep.

A short circular loop to climb above Bidarray.

A very beautiful hike with a variety of paths. Beautiful views of the Iparla mountain range throughout the climb. At the summit, there is a magnificent 360° view, as is often the case in the Basque Country. You can see the beaches of the Basque Country and Landes, the Béarn Mountains and, on a clear day, even the Hautes-Pyrénées. The climb to the summit is demanding and in places you will need to follow the description and GPS track carefully. There are no markings indicating this hike until (10), a nameless pass.

A route that starts from the hilltop village of Bidarray, crosses it and returns to it after climbing a little higher.

A very pleasant and original route to reach Iparla from Bidarray. The path up to the Col de Lacho is rarely used and quite wild. Splendid views. A real treat!

This is a lovely route for enjoying peaceful, magnificent views of the modest but beautiful Basque hills and, above all, the Penas d'Ichusi.

A magnificent hike on theGR®10trail in the dizzying haunt of vultures. From the summit, on a clear day, you can see the Pyrenees mountain range as far as the Pic du Midi de Bigorre... and on the other side, the ocean as far as the Landes coast. Please note: the start ofthe GR® 10 behind the sheepfold is no longer accessible. The owner has prohibited access to his farm. Another route has been set up, which is 2 km longer and just as steep as the original hike.
