Circular Oronozia from La Cave d'Irouléguy

A short walk for families or those who don’t have much time to spend hiking. Walkers pass through the forest of the old quarry and head up towards Oronozia, where they can enjoy the vineyards overlooking the village and Etxauzia Castle. The return route goes via Iparraguerre and then through the village.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the municipal car park opposite La Cave d'Irouléguy, located in Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry.

(S/E) With your back to the wine cellar, turn left onto Irulegiko Errepidea, then right onto Etxaluzeneko Bidea.

(1) At the end of Etxaluzeneko Bidea, take the forest path on the left. Continue straight on until you reach Harrobigaizeko Bidea (gravel track).

(2) Enjoy the view from the information panel on the left, then return to Oronozaldeko Bidea and walk downhill for about 1 km past vineyards and houses until you reach the tunnel under the D948.

(3) Turn right under the D948 and continue along Oronozaldeko Bidea for about 200 m until you reach a Stop sign.

(4) Turn right, cross the bridge over the Nive des Aldudes and follow the D948 for about 750 m through the centre of Baïgorry.

(5) Turn right towards Irouléguy, cross the bridge over the Nive des Aldudes and head for the municipal car park opposite La Cave d'Irouléguy (S/E).

Oilarandoi is a magnificent viewpoint overlooking all the surrounding peaks. The nearby Munhoa and, further away, Iparla, Autza, Adarza and many others. At the summit, there was originally a hermitage, which was occupied from 1706 to 1792. The ruins were rebuilt twice, in 1941 and 1985. This hike includes sections with significant gradients of between 30 and 40%, but the reward is at the end and the view from the summit is well worth the effort.

A very pretty circular route that follows the French-Spanish border ridge, passing through three passes.A very well-marked red and white path on the Spanish side allows you to pass below the ridges (for those prone to vertigo). The markings can be helpful, but they change over time due to privatisation, diversions, temporary closures, etc. This circular may be difficult for some people.

This hike to Hautza via the Trempetta ridge is well worth the effort. There is a significant elevation gain, but you are guaranteed to be rewarded with spectacular views. The ridge offers breathtaking vistas that will quickly make you forget the difficulty of the hike. This hike climbs successively to several viewpoints. From the summit of Hautza, there is a 360° view of all the peaks of the Basque Country and, further away, the Pyrenean peaks.

A magnificent hike. The views are spectacular all along the way. You can stock up on snacks and drinks at Col d'Ispeguy, which will lighten your backpack.
