Munhoa and Col d'Urdanzia circular

A pleasant hike of moderate difficulty, except for the final climb up Munhoa, which is quite steep. Magnificent views of the Basque Country landscape. The outward leg of the hike follows the GR®10 to the Col d'Urdanzia. The return leg is not marked, so we recommend using the Visorando app.

Description of the walk

From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, take the Route de Lasse. In Lasse, take the Route de Fiteraenea, which follows the GR®10. Pass Fiteraenea and continue to the junction with the Route d'Anhaux (pidgeon hunting huts). Park here.

(S/E) Follow the road uphill (GR®10) until you reach a fork.

(1) Take the path on the right onto the GR®10. Climb several hairpin bends until you reach a road at a platform where there is a drinking trough.

(2) Leave the track and the road, and turn right onto the GR®10, which crosses the road and climbs up to the ridge, heading due west. Pass a drinking trough and you will come to a memorial stone.

(3) Continue climbing the fairly steep ridge until you reach the summit of Munhoa.

(4) Descend south-west: the GR®10 markings are not very clear and the path is not very well marked. Follow the mountain bike trail markings to reach the same place. At the bottom of the descent, join a track suitable for vehicles.

(5) Follow it opposite and reach the Col d'Urdanzia.

(6) Turn back to the fork you passed earlier.

(5) Take the road on the right, which climbs and becomes a tarmac road on the hillside. Follow it until you reach the platform where the drinking trough is located, which you passed on the way there.

(2) From here on, there are no more markings, so we recommend using the Visorando app. Take the road on the right. Look at the left-hand side of the road and quickly leave the road to take a grassy path that serves as a shortcut and leads to the drinking troughs further down at the Col de Beharia.

(7) Leave the road completely and descend opposite, heading east, towards a hedge of holly and other shrubs. Pass between them and look for a path starting opposite. This well-marked path now heads north-east then east, descending steeply and joining a kind of drovers' road.

(8) Head south, following this path: a stone-lined path with fences for sheep to pass through. The path then turns east and becomes wider. Walk along an enclosure on the left, then head north along the grassy path to reach a road.

(9) Cross it and take a pretty grassy path opposite that leads downhill and eventually joins another road.

(10) Follow this road, turning left and continuing until you reach the initial GR®10 crossroads you passed on the way there.

(1) Go straight ahead and finish on the road to the pidgeon hunting huts (S/E).

Excellent hike... One slight downside: too much road on the descent.

A very beautiful circular. Apart from a hunt at the start, I only encountered one hiker on the way up. In fact, she was doing the GR 10. The fairly strong south-easterly wind on the ridges meant I couldn't stay long at the summit. On the way down Munhoa, I met 15 hikers from the Baigorri valley. Then no one else. The route on the app or GPS is indeed recommended on the way back, at least at the start of section 7 where the path is not very visible. Once it becomes clear, there are no more problems until the end. A walk to do again with a friend. Thank you for this new route.
