The Azketa huts

From the Nive de Béhérobie in Estérençuby, head up one of its tributaries, the Bihurriko Erreka, to discover the peaceful heights where shepherds and their sheep reign supreme. The Azketa huts are inhabited during the summer grazing season. They shelter beautiful Basque-Béarnaise horned sheep. These pastures are also popular with pottoks, the small Basque horses.

Description of the walk

In Estérençuby, park at the northern entrance to the village, in a car park on the banks of the Nive de Béhérobie (if this small car park is full, there are other parking spaces in the centre of the village).
Please note! This hike is not marked.

(S/E) With your back to the river, take the road on the right to pass in front of the school, cross the Estérenguïbel stream, then leave the town hall on your left and continue on the street furthest to the right. Cross the bridge over the Nive and you will find yourself in front of the Hôtel Andreinia. Follow the street to the right. Turn left at the first intersection.

(1) At the fork shortly afterwards, keep right. Continue along this small road which goes up the Bihurriko Erreka valley on your left.

(2) Pass the hamlet of Inhabarrea and continue along the road.

(3) Go through two hairpin bends, then two more further on. You will come to an intersection with a path at some wooden signs. This is the start of the round trip.

(4) Follow the road as it curves to the right. At the next intersection, turn onto the road on the left, which continues uphill through a beautiful beech forest. You may encounter herds of beautiful horned sheep here.

(5) Ignore a path on the left and, further on, ignore two more paths on the left that lead to the Azketa huts below. Shortly afterwards, at the water troughs, leave the road and climb to the top of the hill on the left, which overlooks the huts and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys and peaks. The huts are used to house Manech and Basque-Béarnaise sheep, but you may also encounter horses (pottoks) in these heights.

(6) Descend via the same route to

(4) Take the path on the right. Follow it until you reach an intersection with another path, at the wooden signs (Source de la Nive link).

(7) Keep left to pass in front of a hut. Further on, you will see a drinking trough on your left.

(8) Further on, at the stables on your left, turn onto the path on the right. Stay on this path, ignoring a vague path on the right. In a left-hand bend, note a wooden sign for Col d'Irey in the opposite direction to yours. Ignore another path on the right and enter a beech forest. Further on, the path makes a hairpin bend to the right and then emerges from the forest.

(9) Hairpin bend to the left. Continue along this path until you reach a road, where you will see another wooden sign for Col d'Irey.

(10) Continue straight ahead on a small road that serves farms, above the Nive de Béhérobie, which can be seen on the right. Continue straight ahead to reach a crossroads that you took on the way there.

(1) Continue straight ahead, then turn right to reach the bridge over the Nive, then the car park (S/E) via the same route as on the way there.

Notes

The climb is along a small paved road, frequented only by a few shepherds. However, I did this hike outside of the summer season. I don't know if many tourists take this road by car in the summer.

Very peaceful nature in the hills, beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. Beautiful beech forests, pastures frequented by Basque-Béarnais sheep and pottoks. We also saw many birds of prey.

A very beautiful hike, even if you have to follow the road... But we didn't see a single person, car or pedestrian!
There was no wind on the coast, but from the village of Estérençuby onwards, it was windy, and at the top... we could barely stand up!
The wind helped us cope with the intense heat when we got back to the village; the car thermometer read 41°C!

The first part of the hike was on the road, but there were beautiful views all along the way, with vultures flying overhead!

Beautiful view in the company of horses from the top of the hill
