Baïgura route from Ossès

A lovely ridge route with beautiful views of the Iparla ridges, amongst others. Sometimes off-trail, so requires good visibility and a good understanding of the terrain.
Best done in winter or spring to avoid invasive ferns, especially on the descent from (10) to (13).

Description of the walk

Start from the small car park behind the church in Ossès.

(S/E) Go round to the front of the church and, with your back to it, follow the Route d’Irissary (D8) to the left, heading west (yellow PR® markings leading to Haltzamendi). After about 200 m, turn right towards École Saint-Michel. Pass the school and then the football pitch (on the left).

(1) At the three-way junction, take Chemin Gastenania on the left and follow it to the next junction (yellow markings).

(2) Follow the road to the right, which climbs north-westwards and soon turns into a small grassy track. Reach the ridge at an altitude of 550 metres (yellow markings).

(3) Ignore the PR® path (yellow markings) heading off to the left along the slope and stay on the ridge. To do this, go behind the Yellow Cross and follow a small, more or less visible track to Haltzamendi at an altitude of 813 metres.

(4) Continue along the ridge to a pass reached by a path coming from the left which skirts the summit of Haltzamendi.

(5) From this pass, continue straight on to the foot of Laïna, winding your way between the rocks. It is possible to bypass this section on the right via a path.

(6) Look out for the descending paths to the right of Laïna, which you will take on the return journey. But for now, stay on the ridge to reach Laïna and then descend to a pass. It is possible to bypass Laïna via a path on the left that is more or less level.

(7) Continue straight ahead to reach the antennas on Mont Baïgura.

(8) Continue to Erregelu at an altitude of 846 metres.

(9) At Erregelu, turn back, pass Mont Baïgura and head for the pass between Baïgura and Laïna.

(7) At this pass, ignore a path to the right and take a trail straight ahead along the slope, which bypasses the summit of Laïna and joins the ridge line just beyond the summit.

(6) Turn left onto the correct path you spotted on the way up, which runs along the slope south of the summit of Laïna, and reach the ridge of the shoulder descending south-east of Laïna. Go round a few rocks but generally stay on the summit area.

(10) Leave the ridge branching off to the left, towards the east, to descend the one on the right, to the south, and reach, fairly quickly, a junction of paths.

(11) Leave the path on the left and follow the pretty little ridge to the south. Pass Elixatekoborda at an altitude of 335 metres and reach a track which you quickly leave at the exit of a hairpin bend to the left.

(12) Leave the track at the 226-metre altitude to follow a path on the right descending due south then south-west. Cross a bridge at the 164-metre altitude over the Elueterreka stream and, at a junction, continue due south on the track to the right which joins a small road.

(13) Continue straight on along the small road heading due south, which turns left towards the south-east. Turn right onto the next small road (at Gaztenarenea), heading due west, and rejoin the route you have already taken.

(1) Take the road on the left that runs alongside the football pitch, then turn left onto the D8 and head for the small car park behind the church (S/E).

Notes

No difficulty in good weather for experienced hikers who know how to navigate off-trail and enjoy scrambling over rocky terrain. Ridge paths are sometimes barely visible and navigation is by sight in places, so avoid if visibility is poor. A GPX track is recommended.

Best undertaken in winter or spring to avoid ferns and other invasive vegetation that can make off-trail progress difficult.

Not recommended for families with young children.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

The circuit is rated as difficult and takes 7.5 hours, but I did it on a very hot day, so I set off at 4.15 a.m. with a head torch.
It was relatively cool, but the path was quite difficult to find once I had passed the first peak. After the descent, with daylight, it wasn't any easier. The path sometimes ran along the edge of a drop and was largely overgrown with ferns and brambles. I took the wrong path several times and had to backtrack to find the right route. It was very hot at the end, I had no water left and my legs were exhausted, but I completed the circuit in 6:30 and was very happy to have finished. Perhaps I'll try again this winter when there's less vegetation and it's not so hot.

I went for a hike on a Friday, so there were fewer people than at the weekend. It was bright and sunny, so visibility was excellent for miles around. In some places, especially on the ridges, you have to find your own way. I used my GPS to check my position against the route; otherwise, in some spots it would have been tricky to find the path, as either there isn’t one or there are loads of them... On the descent, there are sections with vegetation. At this time of year it’s fine, but it’s still better to wear trousers than shorts, otherwise you’ll come home with scratches!
A really lovely hike, quite a workout – you need to be fit or take your time...
A stunning view of the ocean towards the Hautes-Pyrénées, still covered in snow!

The first part of the hike is just perfect: once you’ve finished the climb, you’re rewarded with a stunning view and the chance to spot Pyrenean eagles. Easy access and lovely climbs, but after that it turned into a nightmare – the path wasn’t signposted at all, we got lost FIVE TIMES in the tall grass, and ended up with cuts all over and some near-dangerous falls that we could have avoided if the route had been better signposted

We almost had to head back down at night because we couldn’t find the path anymore, and it was only by pushing through the tall grass that we eventually managed to spot a bit of a track on the ground, which we struggled to follow. We ended up having to go back through private property anyway, as the trail runs right through it... A passage under barbed wire to round off the descent...

Luckily, there were two of us who do trail running and hiking, so we managed to find our way. An inexperienced couple or a family with a child would have found themselves trapped....

An easy and beautiful walk in fine weather. It’s often very windy at the summit

Best avoided in summer: the path is unmarked, hard to see, non-existent or hidden by tall ferns, brambles and thorns… Avoid wearing shorts if you want to keep wearing dresses!
A magnificent start to the route up to the Haltzamendi sign at an altitude of 813 metres, then it’s an adventure... you hike by instinct... Eventually we made it (with difficulty) to Baigura but couldn’t find the return path and had to come back via the classic route, which is easy, pretty but a bit monotonous.
Magnificent scenery nonetheless.
Something to do again in the autumn or spring perhaps...

An unusual hike. The climb up to Altzamendi is a bit of a leg-burner but interesting. The rest of the route is straightforward until the descent. Here, the tall ferns at this time of year sometimes hide the path, so you need to be careful. You may need to consult the GPS track at times. Make sure you take enough water for this long hike, which is best done in winter or spring. The heat of early summer was a bit much towards the end.

We did the hike in the opposite direction and stopped at Laina. The ridge walk to Laina and then between Laina and Haltzamendi is very interesting, with magnificent views. It is possible to reach Laina directly without going over the pass – the same applies on the way down.

Today’s hike: after the signpost indicating Haltzamendi 300m ahead, we lost the path from the GPS track that climbs up to the ridge.
The ridge path was barely visible, forcing us to navigate several rocky barriers by feel, and the descent path was also barely visible and steep.
Perhaps this hike should be reclassified as difficult; we preferred to turn back.
