Park at the top of the village, on the Place de la Mairie, near the pelota court.
(S/E) Turn right to go past the restaurant and continue straight ahead on the small road markedGR®10(red and white). Continue following these markings. Pass the welcoming Etxezaharra lodge and then the Urrizate lodge. The road turns into a red dirt track that climbs steeply.
(1) 100m further on, a Harriondi sign confirms the route; turn left. The climb becomes quite steep, rising sharply up the hillside. This is followed by a series of more or less steep climbs.
(2) More than an hour after leaving the car park, you will see the ruins of the Legarré sheepfold. The oak trees that line the path provide shelter from both the sun and the rain: the ideal place for a short break. The path, clearly marked in yellow, continues to climb. The Penas d'Ichusi are clearly visible opposite us as we round a bend: it's very beautiful!
(3) The path now climbs steeply, and you can see the Irubelacascoa opposite before reaching a group of more or less ruined buildings. This is the highest point of the hike.
(4) To descend, follow the only path, which is marked in yellow. The slope is gentle, but be careful as it crosses scree and the stones are not all stable. You can see the summit of Baïgura opposite, in the distance, from where paragliders take off in the Basque Country. Our path soon joins theGR®10.
(5) Just follow the path, although the descent is steep in places.
(6) At a place called Urdabordia, follow the small road on the right, which soon turns left. The bell tower of Bidarray is in sight. At the Etxezaharra lodge, turn right to return to the town hall car park (S/E).
