Freudenstadt walks

A lovely hike in the Black Forest without any major difficulties. It takes us along wooded paths past Lake Sankenbachsee, the Sankenbacher Waterfalls, the Glasmännlehütte refuge and a short detour into the town of Baiersbronn.

The tour through the ‘City of Art’, Freudenstadt, leads through the town centre and up to the Kienberg. Numerous works of art by multi-award-winning artists, ranging from the Renaissance to the present day, are on display. On the Kienberg, art and nature combine to create a wonderful experience.

A lovely walk through the Tonbach Valley, then up through the hills on the way back. The walk begins along the River Tonbach, then the path climbs towards the game reserve. You may spot around twenty fallow deer in the vast enclosure. On the way back, you’ll pass along zigzag paths twice – a distinctive feature of this route.

A hike alternating between forests and sloping pastures in the typical Black Forest landscape, with lovely green valleys and babbling brooks. More accessible all year round from the Dollenberg car park (accessible via the B28 road), this alternative route is slightly longer than the official 13.4 km ‘Wiesensteig’ route recommended by the Bad Peterstal Griesbach Tourist Office.

The ‘AugenBlick’ circular walk from Pfalzgrafenweiler to Kälberbronn combines the joys of nature with culinary highlights. There are two excellent places to stop for refreshments along the route: one right at the start and another in the village centre.

Magnificent views, impressive rock formations and hidden places of power, a waterfall in unspoilt natural surroundings – there’s plenty to discover on this tour, which is just under 7 kilometres long.

A short trail (1 km) in the middle of a nature reserve allows you to discover two interesting things: how nature is rebuilding itself after the Lothar storm of 1999 without human intervention and how woodpeckers interact with trees. Several variations of the route are available, including one that allows you to walk along the trail with a pushchair or wheelchair as it is made of wooden planks.Hikers can continue on the Panoramarundweg trail or take other hikes a little further afield (by bus or car) in the Black Forest (including the Allerheiligen waterfalls).

The ‘Maisacher Turmsteig’ quality trail takes you 14 km along the Maisach ridge to the ‘Buchkopfturm Maisach’ tower. The circular route offers magnificent views, narrow paths and challenging sections. There are schnapps fountains and a new forest toilet on the route.

Challenging, scenic and enjoyable – these are the hallmarks of the approximately 11-kilometre-long Himmelssteig. Along the way, the route alternates between mossy, grassy and root-strewn paths, passing through and alongside dense fir and mixed forests.

A pleasant short hike along the gorges, which are home to a series of waterfalls. The hike can be done in either direction of the circular route. The direction of the circular loop shown is the ascent of the gorges and waterfalls. The path consists of steps to make the ascent easier. Once you arrive in the hamlet of Allerheiligen, you will find amenities and places to eat.The ruins of an ancient abbey are open to visitors. Are you looking for a short, scenic yet challenging hike less than an hour from Strasbourg? This circular route offers panoramic views of the Alsace plain and, on the other side, the Black Forest mountain range. It partly follows a route marked by the Schwarzwälder Genießerpfade (Black Forest Gourmet Trail), but in the opposite direction, so you’ll come across a few other walkers. It doesn’t follow this route exactly either, taking a few detours to make the walk shorter and offer more panoramic views.

This hike in the Black Forest National Park takes you along the ridges between the Hornisgrinde and Hochkopf moors and passes by the high-altitude Mummelsee lake. It largely follows the Westweg long-distance hiking trail, which crosses the Black Forest from north to south.

A hike in the Black Forest mountains, culminating in the glacial lake of Mummelsee and, on a clear day, a breathtaking view from the summit of Hornisgrinde over the Rhine Valley, Strasbourg and the Vosges mountains.

Hike to the highest peak in the northern Black Forest, the Hornisgrinde (1,164 m), which you climb twice, first from the south and then from the north. Superb panoramic view of the Rhine plain. You pass the TV transmitter with its impressive 206 m high transmission tower. The route then passes through Ochsenstall, from where you reach the Unterstmatt ski resort. You return via another climb up the Hornisgrinde, then cross the peat bogs before passing the Dreifürstenstein.

A varied circular hike through the Edelfrauengrab waterfalls and over the Karlsruhe ridge with beautiful views of the Achertal valley and the Rhine valley.

On this circuit around the village of Ottenhöffen, you will see five mills, a water-powered forge and... numerous self-service schnapps fountains (Schnappsbrunnen). A hike along the western ridge of the Black Forest via the Westweg, which links Pforzheim to Basel. From Hundseck, the route passes via the Hochkopf, the Hornisgrinde moorland (the highest peak in the northern Black Forest) and the picturesque Mumelsee. Sweeping panoramic views open out over the Rhine Valley as far as the Vosges. You’ll walk through vast pine forests along narrow mountain paths and wide forest tracks. You’ll cross babbling streams over old wooden bridges.

Do you enjoy the sound of running water, birdsong and a bit of a hike? You can do all that here with the family.

The Schiltach Schlossberg circular walk combines Black Forest nature, history and impressive views to create a particularly charming hiking experience. From the banks of the Kinzig, the route leads to Schenkenburg, then on through the forest to Roman excavations at Brandsteig and over scenic high ground with views of the Kinzig Valley as well as towards Aichhalden and Schramberg. A particular highlight is the viewpoint at the castle ruins on the Schlossberg, offering a wonderful view of Schiltach. To round off the walk, the historic old town beckons with its cosy places to stop for refreshments.

Cross a nature reserve via the Wildnispfad (a wild trail littered with dead trees) and the Luckspfad (Lynx Trail). Walk along the ridges of the Badener Höhe and the Seekopf. Descend to the idyllic glacial lake, Herrenwieser See.

A long and physically demanding hike, but the view from Mummelsee is well worth the effort. The route starts off gently at the bottom of the valley, then from the small lake (watch out for the aggressive swan!) the path becomes much steeper. Return via an alternative route. If, once you reach Mummelsee, you feel you need to shorten the return journey, turn back – you’ll save 4 km.

A lovely little walk above Bühl, starting from Windeck Castle, then passing through orchards, meadows and vineyards to the entrance to Bühl, and finally climbing up to the higher ground. The walk is signposted by the “Kappler Genusstour” signs.
