Above Bühl

Head to Bühl (Baden), then follow the route leading to Windeck Castle (not open to the public). Park in the car park.

(S/E) Head due north, following the route marked by the small ‘Kappler Genusstour’ signs. Walk down the street, past the ‘Panorama Restaurant’, then turn right.

(1) At the end of the bend, take the path on the left: signposted “Kappler Genusstour”. Follow this route, which leads through the forest, orchards, vineyards and pastures.

(2) Turn right at a 90° angle and follow the winding path until you reach the first houses in Riegel.

(3) At the entrance to the neighbourhood, cross the road and continue straight ahead, following the small “Kappler Genusstour” signs. Please note: there are several possible routes marked by these “Kappler Genusstour” signs, so be sure to follow the route on this route map. Turn left onto Riegelweg, then right to join Kappelwindeckstrasse.

(4) Turn left and carry on until you reach the junction with Burgweg on the left.

(5) Keep to the right and continue to follow the “Kappler Genusstour”, going straight on all the way to the Baroque Church of St Maria. Cross the small square.

(6) Turn right onto Klotzbergstrasse and carry on until you reach No. 18.

(7) Turn right onto a path between the houses, then follow the small “Kappler Genusstour” signs to come out onto Hohbaumweg.

(8) Turn right and follow the road straight on until the end. Continue along the path that follows on from it, turn left at the junction and you’ll reach a fork in the road.

(9) Carry on straight ahead (quite a steep slope) until you reach the “Grillplatz”, a lovely spot with tables, a shelter, a large barbecue and a stunning view.

(10) Turn back to the previous fork in the path.

(9) Turn left onto the path which continues through the vineyards. Once at the edge of the forest, ignore the three paths on the left that are very close together and carry on until you reach a T-junction.

(11) Turn left. Follow the path as it curves to the right, winding through the vineyards, until you reach the Schutzenweg; follow this path as it continues to the Kappelwindeckstrasse. Follow the road to the left, passing the Jägersteig restaurant.

(12) About fifty metres further on, turn onto the path on the left, which winds several times before heading south and climbing up towards the castle (S/E).

Along the route, in the Riegel neighbourhood, there is a market gardener selling fruit and vegetables by the roadside.
