The Schiltach Schlossberg circular walk combines Black Forest nature, history and impressive views to create a particularly charming hiking experience. From the banks of the Kinzig, the route leads to Schenkenburg, then on through the forest to Roman excavations at Brandsteig and over scenic high ground with views of the Kinzig Valley as well as towards Aichhalden and Schramberg. A particular highlight is the viewpoint at the castle ruins on the Schlossberg, offering a wonderful view of Schiltach. To round off the walk, the historic old town beckons with its cosy places to stop for refreshments.

Description of the walk

Start: The AugenBlick Nature Park circular walk begins at the Häberlesbrücke bridge near Schiltach Mitte railway station.

(S/E) First, we follow the River Kinzig to Schenkenburg, with a fantastic view of the Kinzig loop.

(1) Via the Winterhaldenhof (2), the route climbs steadily uphill to the Roman excavations at Brandsteig, which are well worth seeing.

(3) At the top, we follow the Ostweg for a short while, with panoramic views both into the Kinzig Valley and towards Aichhalden and Schramberg.

(4) The Schwenkenhof is a great place to stop for a break before heading back towards Schiltach, mostly along footpaths.

(5) From the spot by the castle ruins on the Schlossberg, there is a wonderful view of Schiltach and the Kinzig Valley.

(6) The route takes you downhill through the historic old town, with various places to stop for refreshments, back to the starting point. (S/E)
