Ferrières (Tarn) walks

A beautiful forest walk around Ferrières. Chestnut trees, beech, oak, spruce, holly, boxwood, elm… all these tree species are there for us to enjoy. This walk is recommended for around mid-November, when the beech trees have taken on their autumn colours.

This combination of the ‘circular route of Plos’ (in Occitan, ‘Plo’ means village) and the ‘Peyremourou’ nature trail offers a great variety of landscapes: the old Castres–Brassac railway line overlooking the Agout, the granite rocks as you climb towards Peyremourou, the villages of Pébiau and Casalits nestled in their mountainous setting, the alpine meadows of the plateau overlooking them, and, to round it off, the imposing Château de Ferrières.

A fully signposted trail offering magnificent views over the forests, followed by pleasant farmland. Passes through charming hamlets. A few rocks characteristic of the Sidobre region. The route is mostly shaded, which is welcome in summer.

Places to visit: the Museum of Protestantism and Ferrières Castle. Start opposite the town hall annexe, at La Ramade. A walk through woodland, fields and meadows, with numerous viewpoints. Magnificent panoramic views of the Monts de Lacaune, the Sidobre, the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees. The route passes through the village of Ferrières, where you can see the château and the watermills, and follow the route of the little train that operated until 1962, which had opened up this entire hilly region.

This region, between Mazamet and Castres, is extraordinary for its accumulation of granite boulders, left in all directions by nature. The walk is always sheltered from the sun and wind, and there is no tarmac. I am making an exception to my rule of ignoring the markings left on rocks and trees. This walk is well signposted, but only pay attention to the FFR markings. White and red lines for theGR® and yellow lines elsewhere.

Walk in Vabre in the Tarn – Destination Sidobre & Vallées, also known as the Camin del Puèg de Borion. A lovely path winding through the countryside and lined with hamlets, where you’ll be treated to several beautiful panoramic views. After the hamlet of Brugairoles, you’ll pass some ruins where you can admire two beautiful granite arches.At the end of the walk, take some time to stroll through the charming village of Vabre and explore its belfry – the Trauc de la Campana – its church, its various restored wash houses and the local specialities on offer in the shops.

This hike, mostly along ridges, offers beautiful views of three valleys: the Ruisseau du Robert at the start, then the Gijou and finally the beautiful Vallée du Berlou at the end of the route. We are in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Park and the mountains rise up to the delight of the eyes. There are roads, of course, but most of them are quiet and offer a bucolic atmosphere, especially in early spring.

On the edge of the Sidobre, the Montagnol Forest is home to magnificent stands of deciduous trees and a rich variety of flora and fauna. This 300-hectare forest, home to the last of the Sidobre’s rocky outcrops before the Monts de Lacaune, also echoes with the terrible memories of the Wars of Religion.The information boards along the trails and the forest visitor centre will give you an insight into its diverse treasures.Botanical trail created by the National Forestry Commission.A short circular walk is also available (discovery trail): duration: 45 mins – distance: 2 km

This circuit combines the pleasures of walking with those of a picnic by the water. The Sidobre rocks are a curiosity worth discovering. Lac du Merle is a haven of peace and enchantment where you can relax in the summer heat. It is a beautiful spot with rocks rising out of the water, giving you the feeling of walking on air.

A lovely circular route taking you round the hamlets near the Parenthèse lodges in the forest. Please follow the directions in the description carefully as we are unable to mark the route. You will come across a water source (stream) halfway along the route.

Hiking trail in the commune of Brassac-sur-Agout in Sidobre & Vallées in the Tarn – Occitanie. Passing through Brassac, a medieval town, and its old quarters, this relatively easy route follows the banks of the Agout, quickly taking you into the heart of the countryside.

A lovely day-long horse ride through the Sidobre rock formations, starting from the Écuries de la Sabatarié. A stop in the morning at Lac du Merle to water the horses. A few safety precautions to bear in mind:- Be vigilant when crossing roads (including the busy D622).- The rocks are not slippery for horses in principle (granite), but always remain vigilant when crossing them.

Hiking trail amongst the rocks and through the Agout Valley at Brassac in the Tarn, by Destination Sidobre & Vallées A one-hour walk along the Agout with a superb viewpoint at the end after a lovely climb. An ideal trail for strolling along the Brassac river and even right through it at times, thanks to the numerous rocks along the way. A hiking trail, winding through open countryside, woodland and along the riverbank, which connects the hamlets of the commune or links up with other walks and villages in the area.   The ‘Lo camin dels tres vilatges del Beç’ is a long and beautiful route, alternating between countryside and woodland, guiding you through varied landscapes along cool sunken paths, shaded tracks or hidden descents, close to the stunning rocks of the Sidobre, in a landscape with pronounced relief but without great difficulty. You’ll enjoy beautiful views, peaceful valleys, the proximity of the waters of the Agout, and, throughout, exceptional tranquillity.

This hike is a little longer than the one suggested by the Tarn Tourist Office, which starts from Saint-Salvy. This alternative starting point allows you to see the Chaos de la Balme and the Chapeau de Napoléon, famous landmarks in the Sidobre. On a clear day, this hike offers beautiful views of the Montagne Noire, the Pyrenees in the background and beautiful fields dotted with rocks.
