The Grand Tour of the Montagnol Forest

On the edge of the Sidobre, the Montagnol Forest is home to magnificent stands of deciduous trees and a rich variety of flora and fauna.

This 300-hectare forest, home to the last of the Sidobre’s rocky outcrops before the Monts de Lacaune, also echoes with the terrible memories of the Wars of Religion.
The information boards along the trails and the forest visitor centre will give you an insight into its diverse treasures.
Botanical trail created by the National Forestry Commission.
A short circular walk is also available (discovery trail): duration: 45 mins – distance: 2 km

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Maison de La Forêt.

(S/E) From the Maison de La Forêt, take the path on the other side of the road that leads into the woods (north-west). Follow the first path on the right, then cross the road (D155) carefully by taking a left-right turn. Continue straight ahead until you reach the forest track.

(1) Junction of the two paths: for the alternative route (discovery trail), see the practical information section.
For the Montagnol Forest circular walk, follow the track straight ahead which descends to the right. Then continue in the same direction until you reach the road (D155).

(2) Cross the roadwith care, go down the path straight ahead and continue straight on to join a wide forest track, ignoring a path on the right.

(3) Take the sharp right-hand bend, ignore all paths to the right and left, cross a stream and join the road (D155).

(4) Cross it with care as always and continue along the track opposite. 500 m after the first stream, ignore a path leading down to the left. Continue along the nature trail to the site of the old slate quarries.

(5) Take the hairpin bend to the right and then carry on straight ahead until you reach the Ruisseau du Vialou.

(6) At the end of the bend, take the path on the left (junction with the discovery trail) which winds through the woods before reaching the car park, keeping straight ahead the whole way (S/E).

A pleasant hike, best done on a sunny day.
However, the end of the hike was not very well explained (luckily we had GPS!).

Very nice circuit, but there are tree stumps that make it look like a minefield.
