Starting from the dinosaur car park in Merbes-le-Château, the walk offers a loop through the Upper Sambre Valley, passing by the first two locks on the Belgian side and through the countryside overlooking the Hantes Valley.The route follows two pretty little sections of the tram line that once linked Binche to Montignies-Saint-Christophe.The architectural highlight of the route is the magnificent Château de Solre-sur-Sambre.

After the station, the hike takes you over hill and dale through the forest for about 4.5 km before moving decisively into the countryside until you return to Ham-sur-Heure.

Maubeuge, besieged stronghold
This cycling route takes you to the main sites of the siege of Maubeuge, which took place from 27 August to 8 September 1914. Although the siege immobilised tens of thousands of German soldiers for several days, preventing them from fighting in the Battle of the Marne, it ended in a serious French defeat, with more than 40,000 prisoners, representing a tenth of all French prisoners of war during the Great War.

On horseback around Ville-sur-Haine
The name of this village is said to come from the presence of a Roman villa built along the Haine River. The name evolved over the centuries, becoming 'Villa-Super-Hoeniam' (1240), 'Ville-Sour-Haine' (1293), 'Ville-sur-Haysne' (1660) and 'Ville-Sur-Heine' (1744). This walk will take you mainly along the towpaths of the Canal du Centre and the Canal du Centre Historique.
