Merbes-le-Château walks

Starting from the dinosaur car park in Merbes-le-Château, the walk offers a loop through the Upper Sambre Valley, passing by the first two locks on the Belgian side and through the countryside overlooking the Hantes Valley.The route follows two pretty little sections of the tram line that once linked Binche to Montignies-Saint-Christophe.The architectural highlight of the route is the magnificent Château de Solre-sur-Sambre.

Start this loop at the Roman bridge in Montignies-Saint-Christophe. This circuit will take you through the countryside and woods, as well as past some characterful buildings between Montignies-Saint-Christophe and Solre-sur-Sambre. Throughout this loop, you will enjoy exploring all types of terrain and appreciating the rural character of this region.

Around Thuin, a charming little fortified town, this short hike partly follows the Ravel 3 and Ravel line 109/2, passing through typical streets on the ramparts of Thuin and the magnificent Grand Bon Dieu woods.

This cross-border route follows the Sambre and rural paths in France and Belgium, allowing you to discover the magnificent Solre-sur-Sambre Castle. Stroll in peace and quiet and observe the landscapes and biodiversity.

For this circular, park in the small car park in front of Bonne Espérance Abbey. On your return, you can enjoy a beer or a slice of sugar tart...

A walk for those nostalgic for the little mountains, with their valleys, plateaus and streams spanned by old stone bridges. A walk for lovers of calm and nature. The route takes you on a journey of discovery to five kiosks and three water mills.You will also take the old railway line, which has been converted into a greenway. This hilly route is suitable for experienced cycle tourists.

A challenging hike combining heritage, nature and history, the 66 km cross-border trail is for you. Pass from France to Belgium, then from nature to history, in just a few pedal strokes.

Take a stroll along the Sambre, passing by the two nautical stops at Boussois and Marpent, as well as Fort Boussois. The latter belongs to the military and is inaccessible, but you can admire its silhouette through the trees that surround it.

If the need for silence, tranquillity, and rolling pastoral landscapes takes hold of you, the Bois de Fagne circuit will fulfil your needs and leave you feeling rested and in the holiday spirit... It’s hard to believe you’re so far north, especially if the sun is out.

At the start, the hike offers an outdoor visit to the Château d'Ham-sur-Heure and the Sentier des Prairies du Château, which leads to the station, passing close to a waterfall and a half-bridge over the Eau d'Heure. After the station, the hike takes you over hill and dale through the forest for about 4.5 km before moving decisively into the countryside until you return to Ham-sur-Heure.

A pleasant circular walk in the woods near Charleroi. Discover part of the Eau d'Heure valley and the charming village of Jamioulx. The Eau d'Heure is a small river that flows into the Sambre at Marchienne-au-Pont. It gets its name from its unique ability to rise in an hour and fall just as quickly.

This cycling route takes you to the main sites of the siege of Maubeuge, which took place from 27 August to 8 September 1914. Although the siege immobilised tens of thousands of German soldiers for several days, preventing them from fighting in the Battle of the Marne, it ended in a serious French defeat, with more than 40,000 prisoners, representing a tenth of all French prisoners of war during the Great War.

The central canal and the historic canal have joined forces with a short stretch of the Haine to create a delightful walk along the water.

Starting from the Strépy-Thieu funicular lift, the walk takes you on a discovery of the infrastructure of both canals, the historic and the recent.Four lifts, two drawbridges, two swing bridges and a few other remains, documented on four-language information panels, enhance the walk along the historic canal to its junction with the new canal at its eastern end.

The name of this village is said to come from the presence of a Roman villa built along the Haine River. The name evolved over the centuries, becoming 'Villa-Super-Hoeniam' (1240), 'Ville-Sour-Haine' (1293), 'Ville-sur-Haysne' (1660) and 'Ville-Sur-Heine' (1744). This walk will take you mainly along the towpaths of the Canal du Centre and the Canal du Centre Historique.

The built heritage is typical.Montbliart was also home to an academy of surrealist artists (painters and poets) who created an art magazine, the Daily-Bul (information panels in front of the village hall).

Discover Gottignies and Ville-sur-Haine as you follow the meandering course of the Wanze. This river, which can also be spelled "Wance", rises in Montauban and flows through the small village of Gottignies before joining the Haine in Ville-sur-Haine.

A hike that offers panoramic views of magnificent valleys and, above all, the Wanze. Gottignies is a beautiful village in the municipality of Le Roeulx, nestled between two hills. The church of St Léger has recently been renovated. Several walking routes are available. Here, the 20 km route is used by the village walking group, "Les Marcheurs Gottignards"
