Route from La Hante to Cousolre

This is a fairly challenging walk along paths and roads through wooded countryside, with the Hante valley providing a striking backdrop. There are many panoramic views, but you will need to be fit and wear good footwear.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in front of Cousolre Town Hall.

(S/E) Walk past the town hall on your left, then take the first street on the left. Opposite the police station, turn right onto the grassy path known as the Préaux. Further up, at the junction, turn right. You will reach the hamlet of Gérard Croix.

(1) Follow the tarmac road to the left, then turn left again onto the straight road. At the next crossroads, continue straight on until you reach the Masure farm.

(2) At the corner of the farm, turn right, walk past the buildings and continue along the path through the fields. From this high vantage point, enjoy the view of the villages of Bousignies-sur-Roc and Bersillies l’Abbaye (in Belgium), through which the rivers Hante and Thure flow. At the bottom of the descent, turn left into Bousignies-sur-Roc.

(3) After the Pont de la Roue Sèche, go up to the left and then left again. After passing the cemetery, take the narrow lane on the left. At the end of this lane, turn left. Follow the Hante for about fifty metres. At the next junction, follow the tarmac road to the right. On leaving Vivier Loir, turn right again

(4) At the crossroads, turn right, then immediately left onto the dirt track at the corner of the barn. Further on, at the T-junction, continue to your right to join the tarmac road (RD80).

(5) Turn left and take this road with care. Before Comagne, head right towards the small chapel, then turn right again. Stay on the main dirt track that runs alongside the Taille Bouly woods and, at the T-junction, turn left then right.

(6) Follow the bend to the right and head down to the hamlet of Reugnies via the Pont Couroux. Cross through Reugnies and turn right at the T-junction.

(7) As you leave the hamlet, turn left and continue until you reach a small road, which you follow briefly to the left. At the four-way junction, follow the RD80 straight ahead and head back towards Cousolre and its bandstand before reaching the town hall car park (S/E).

A pleasant, scenic route. However, I wouldn’t recommend it in hot weather, as two-thirds of the route is in the open and on tarmac.

We have done it several times and always enjoyed it. The only slight downside was in winter, when a small section of the trail was really difficult to walk on because it was too muddy. The joys of hiking.

A very beautiful walk with excellent signposting. Not difficult, with varied landscapes. We will do it again.

A 13.2 km route through the countryside with a few slight inclines, but nothing too challenging!

With a small section of the Salamander Route, it is preferable to follow the "normal" markings (CR du Nord) rather than the "hunting season variant" according to the route proposed by Visorando (more of a change of scenery). Route done quite a few times regardless of the season.

We didn't do the whole route because we continued on to the Salamandre route and then the Larrons route: the three routes cover around 25 km of hilly terrain and varied landscapes. It's a shame we didn't reach the River Thure, which might have been possible without a big detour when heading north towards Cousolre.
