Description of the walk

Park near the town hall and the Cousorle bandstand, Place Charles De Gaulle.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, head towards the Maison du Patrimoine and go under the archway. At the bottom of the alley, turn right, walk past the Léon Déjardin nursery school and follow the alley to Rue du Brey. Turn right to reach Rue Éloi Cougneau.

(1) Turn left and walk for about 300 metres.

(2) Turn onto the dirt track on the right and walk along the back of the houses on Rue Éloi Cougneau to reach the bridge over the Thure.

(3) Cross the bridge, open the gate and don’t forget to close it behind you. Follow the path to the left, along the Thure, then veer right to head up into the woods. Walk alongside the farmland on your right, then, at the junction, turn right to leave the woods and come out onto Route de Bérelles.

(4) Turn left. At the corner of the farm, turn right and follow the road to the hamlet of Les Haies.

(5) Turn left and follow the road past the Ferme de la Perche.

(6) Before Château de Boutigny, take the dirt track on the right to go alongside the property and the Ruisseau de Grand Rieux. At the end of the track, you’ll come out onto Route de Cousorle.

(7) Turn right towards Les Vingt Bonniers. Cross the railway line and continue straight on this road towards Cousolre. Cross the railway line again and turn left to join the Route de Bérelles (D80).

(8) Turn left. Take the first right onto Rue de la Gare Annexe and, at the end of this street, turn right twice to follow Rue Bréoux.

(9) Walk past the Étang de la Fédération, which you can walk around if you wish. Otherwise, continue along Rue Bréoux and, at the end, turn right to cross the bridge. Immediately afterwards, turn left to reach the footbridge over the Thure; cross it to reach the Marais playground.

(10) Turn right and follow the river to the other footbridge, which you also cross to reach Rue des Juifs.

(11) Walk up the street to the right until you reach the square, then head straight on to return to the bandstand and the town hall (S/E).

A very pleasant route along muddy paths – though the weather at this time of year certainly plays a part – and quiet country lanes that offer a chance to explore the countryside around Cousolre. There were 12 of us on the route; everyone agreed it was a great route.

Purists might perhaps criticise the route for mainly following roads. These are quiet roads (we undertook the walk on a Saturday), which allow you to discover some interesting buildings such as the moving and overcrowded Lefevre family chapel and Boutigny Castle, and to discover, lost in the middle of nowhere, the unlikely Friterie des Haies, to meet and chat with the locals, and to imagine the grandeur of the locomotives on the old Ferrière-la-Grande–Cousorle railway line...
I recommend taking a short round trip (between8 and 9) to the site of the old Cousorle station to see the imposing house of the former quarry manager or that other building with the rounded façade.
Just a quick note regarding the description at (8): Turn left. Take the first right... at the end of this, turn right twice to follow Rue Bréoux. It should read... at the end of this, turn right, leave Rue du Petit Mont on your left and head down to the Etang de la Fédération.
Difficulty: easy, in my opinion

A very pleasant route. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes, as the path through the woods after point 3, running alongside the Thure, is quite damp. The path after point 4 offers views of the lush countryside around Cousolre.
Highly recommended for those who love peace and quiet and the countryside

A lovely route, but do take care at the start in Cousolre to get your bearings properly, as street names aren’t marked everywhere and we ended up going the wrong way!
A lovely trail between points 2 and 4, and we had a picnic by the stream ‘Le Fourneau’ between points 7 and 8 – beautiful little green valleys...
