Description of the walk

Departure: Place de Trahegnies. Blue markings

(S/E) Take Rue de la Case. Turn left and enter the woods.

(1) 20 metres further on, on the right, continue along the path that goes around the Étang de la Case. At the end of the path, go up to the right until you reach the asphalt road, which you follow to the right. At the fork, turn left.

(2) At the end of this road, take the path on the left, which narrows as it climbs. When you reach the first inhabited street, head towards the path that connects to Rue d'Anderlues, which you cross. Continue along the stony path that leads you to the left, facing Moulin Stoclet.

(3) Walk up Rue du Moulin for 150 metres. Take the grassy path on the right to reach the balcony , where you can admire a magnificent view of Binche and the surrounding region.

(4) Continue under a power line. When you reach the asphalt road, go down to the right for about 150 m. Take the lane on your left, which will lead you to Rue des Trieux. Take another lane and discover a peaceful, rural spot.
Continue your walk, which will take you to the watershed between Belgium's two major river basins, the Scheldt and the Meuse.

(5) Turn right onto Rue des Boulois. On your right, you will see the Roix des Occis and on your left thefirst slag heaps of the Pays Noir. Stay on the asphalt road and continue straight ahead, ignoring all turning off to the right and left for 1 km.

(6) When you reach Chemin de Fontaine, take thefirst path on your right that runs alongside the École du Bois du Roy (admire the panoramic view in front of you). At the crossroads, turn left. At the next crossroads, take Rue José Blairon on the left and go down Rue Verte on the right until you reach the crossroads with Rue H. Trigallez.

Turn right, take the first right immediately and follow a small path. An alternative route allows you to discover the nature and environment initiation centre, depending on opening hours. Continue along the path and return to your starting point via the alleyway (S/E).

Worth a visit

(1) L'Étang de la Case
Former clay pit (clay quarry).
Today, it is a peaceful haven dedicated to fishing.

(3) The Stoclet Mill
It was built in 1795 by Jean-Philippe Stoclet, a tenant farmer in Leval.
The location is ideal, elevated and well exposed to the winds.
The mill was hit by several tornadoes in 1884 and at the beginning of the 20th century. This mill, listed as a site in 1950 and as a monument in 1970, is now privately owned and not open to visitors.

Château Trigallez - Centre for Nature and Environmental Education.
Château Trigallez is a beautiful bourgeois house built at the end of the 19th century. It belonged to Mr Hector Trigallez, chief engineer of the Charbonnage de la Courte coal mine and Mayor of Leval from 1878 to 1921.
Today, it houses the Centre for Nature and Environmental Education, which offers a range
educational exhibitions. Interested visitors can discover a permanent exhibition retracing the historical, economic and social past of the locality known as "La Courte", where the slag heaps, remnants of the coal mine, are located, as well as various temporary exhibitions related to the environment.
The Pierre Stalon room showcases beautiful prehistoric and palaeontological collections from Binche and Africa.

Impeccable blue markings throughout the walk. No forests, but not too many roads or streets, lots of narrow lanes. Beautiful views.
