Le Jocou and the Col de Seysse

Between Isère and Drôme, Jocou dominates the Diois Massif. Although only 2,051 metres high, it offers an exceptional view of all the relatively low mountain ranges in the south-west of the Alps. It is not uncommon to see vultures flying over these sheep pastures.

Description of the walk

Park in the small space on the edge of the D539 at a bend: space for two to three cars.

(S/E) Head north, following the red and white markings of the GR®93. Turn right at the first fork and continue for a few dozen metres.

(1) Look for the return path on the left and turn right again, leaving the GR®.

(2) At the "Col des Armoussières" sign, head straight up north towards Col Vente-Cul. Walk first through the woods, then along the edge of the pasture to the pass.

(3) Continue north-northwest to Col du Pigeon.

(4) Continue on the north-northwest trail towards the shepherd's hut, then follow the trail due north to reach the summit of Jocou.

(5) Continue along the path on the ridge to reach the Archat ridge.

(6) Head left towards Col de Seysse. Go through a gate and descend northwards on tight switchbacks. Further down, turn left onto the trail and reach Col de Seysse, where you will find the GR®93 and the white and red markings.

(7) Go through a gate and turn left to descend the valley southwards towards the Jocou pasture. Follow the GR®93 to the intersection with the path leading to Col Lachau.

(8) Continue straight on towards Grimone, staying on the GR®93, until you reach another fork: directional sign.

(9) Keep left to head towards Col de Grimone via La Pouyat, through light undergrowth. You will come out onto a forest track; follow it to the left until you reach a hairpin bend.

(10) Leave the track and take a path on the right, keeping to the GR®93 markings, and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Head right, then turn left about 50 metres further on to descend to the car park (S/E).

Hello and thank you,
Do you have any up-to-date information on when it would be possible to cycle around the Col de Seysse? Other websites state that access is prohibited from 1 June to 30 October. But what is the situation in reality outside this period regarding the presence of herds and guard dogs? Can we cycle up there confident that we won’t be stopped along the route? Thank you in advance!

GR93 JOCOU sector, Jiboui pasture, Seysse pass

Permanently closed since autumn 2021

The old GR®93 variant that passed through the Jocou summit from the Seysse Pass or, conversely, from the Grimone road has been removed. The climb from the Seysse Pass to Jocou is prohibited. Too many problems affecting the safety of hikers have arisen (bites from guard dogs, unauthorised deviation from the GR via rocky outcrops, etc.). No solution has been found in over two years of consultation to improve the route up to Jocou. This section is private property.

The GR93® route from the Col de Seysse to the Col de Grimone road remains unchanged.
The red route is prohibited.

My opinion: outside the grazing period, it should be possible.
