Le Glandasse from Chatillon-en-Diois via the Fontaine des Tuiles

The aim of the route is to reach the summit of Glandasse mountain (known as the Dôme or Pié Ferré - 2,041 metres above sea level) via an alternative routeto the GR®91: Pié de Boeuf, near the Col de Caux (overlooking the Baïn valley), Fontaine des Tuiles (dominated by the Roc d'Ambane). The return journey is via theGR®91.

Description of the walk

The start is planned from the town hall of Châtillon-en-Diois (near a fountain).
I also suggest an alternative route starting from Combe de Baïn (which shortens the route): see the route here.

(S/E) Head north up the Tricot hill.

(1) A little further up, you will come to a fork with theGR®91(which you will return along): continue straight on towards Col de Caux, following theGR®95trail.

(2) At a fork (Le Suel), leave the carriage road by turning left, still on theGR® (towards Col de Caux). After crossing a ford, the path climbs steeply at the beginning.

(3) After a good walk, turn right towards Col de Caux at a new fork (La Baume, elevation 870). The trail climbs steadily, without excess, and with large switchbacks, to Pié de Boeuf (beautiful viewpoint).

(4) Continue north on theGR® trail overlooking the Baïn valley, without any significant elevation gain (beautiful scenery), gradually approaching the Glandasse mountain.

(5) Shortly after the Col de Mireille and just before the Col de Caux, leave theGR® and turn right (towards Châtillon-en-Diois and Le Suel) onto a downhill path.

(6) After a right-hand bend in the path, look for a path starting on the left (marked by a cairn): take this path on the left, which is narrower but easy to follow. Climb gently, crossing a few stream beds (dry when I passed through in summer).
A little higher up, you will join another path (coming from the Ferme de Baïn)

(7). Continue left uphill to arrive shortly afterwards at a more open area where you will see a cairn marking the junction of three paths (a clear spot with a nice view).
Turn left and continue uphill on a moderate slope: all along the way, the regular presence of cairns should help you find your way on a rather narrow path (note: the path opposite joins theGR®91towards the forest track or Châtillon-en-Diois via the route described in the Visorando hike Boucle du balcon de Baïn from Châtillon-en-Diois) .

(8) At an altitude of 1,485 metres, at the bend in the path, turn right onto a small track leading a few metres further on to the Fontaine des Tuiles (moderately visible) where you can refill your water bottles (the flow may be very low).

Return to the trail to continue the ascent (north-east direction) and reach the Col de la Raille.

(9) Then turn left. The initial climb is steep.

(10) After about 200 metres (horizontally), follow theGR®91in the extension (ignore the path on the right, which will be taken on the way back).

(11) At the fork that appears very quickly, turn right, still on the GR®.

(12) Continue for a short while (about 30 minutes or 1.5 km) on a north-west facing section, then leave theGR® trail and climb straight towards the summit (the suggested route is indicative). Through a sparse forest with no excessive incline, reach the summit in sight (south-west orientation). Throughout the climb, you may pass edelweiss flowers (please note that picking flowers is prohibited).

(13) From Pié Ferré (2,041 m), topped by a cairn, you can enjoy a beautiful panorama: to the south, the Trois Becs, and to the north, the Grand Veymont and Mont Aiguille.
Head south along the ridge, following a few cairns. Approach the cliff (Roc d'Ambane): follow the ridge where the cliff is, never far to your right (the route is straightforward).

(14) At Roc d'Ambane, head east-southeast, still on the ridge. After a steep descent, rejoin theGR® (the same place you passed on the way up).

(11) Continue for a few more metres until you reach an intersection that you also passed on the way there.

(10) Turn left and continue on theGR® to the clearly visible Cabane de Châtillon (unguarded refuge). A few steps away, you can also enjoy the view from the top of the cliffs overlooking the Cirque d'Archiane.

(15) Continue south on theGR® trail, which crosses the plateau on a slight incline until you reach a large cairn. Five minutes later, you will pass by the Baume Rousse ledge. If necessary, make a short detour to the Beaume Rousse spring to refill your water bottles (small reservoir at the foot of the cliff protected by a small trapdoor; note that the flow is low): in this case, make a return trip on the path along the ledge.

(16) Head southwest along the winding path and follow the trail, which has some steep descents. Enter the forest and continue downhill.

(17) At an altitude of 1155 metres, you will arrive at a small meadow on relatively flat ground: this is Serre des Granges (roughly halfway down the descent). Continue along the path until you come to a forest track: go straight on to continue along the GR®.

(18) At a fork, ignore the path on the right, which seems better marked than the other, and continue straight ahead on the GR®.

(19) At an elevation of 840 metres (l'Oursière), you will come to a path leading to Maratestel and Col Gorodel: continue straight ahead towards Châtillon-en-Diois. Stay on theGR® trail, ignoring any paths branching off to the sides.

(1) At the Tricot climb, which you passed earlier in the route, turn left and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Good walking shoes are strongly recommended.

Please note: parking is prohibited at Champs de Foire on Friday mornings (weekly market).

You will be crossing large areas of the Hauts Plateaux du Vercors National Nature Reserve, which aims to protect local wildlife; read more here and here.

In poor visibility, it can be difficult to find your way on the plateau. A compass is recommended.

Water sources are scarce: make sure you bring what you need.

Take your rubbish with you! Nature has a hard time digesting it.

Please note, if you decide to do the route in reverse:
be careful at the fork shortly after point (7): take the path on the right to complete the circular loop.
If you decide to take the alternative route (which is slightly shorter), continue straight ahead: follow the route as described here. Please note: once you reach the stream bed, follow it for about ten metres and then continue on the path visible on the left (do not enter the Ferme de Baïn, which is private property)

The overall route is quite satisfactory:

  • From the start (S/E) to (5):GR® 95 markings (good visibility); signposts present
  • From (5) to (6): yellow and green markings
  • From (6) to (9): no visible markings. The route can be easily followed thanks to cairns.
  • From (9) to (12):GR® 91 markings (good visibility); no signposts
  • From (12) to (13): access to the summit using azimuth,
  • From (13) to (11): no markings present. The route is straightforward (a few cairns present),
  • From (11) to the return point (S/E):GR® 91 markings (good visibility). There are a few signposts during the descent.

Frequency of use:
From (S/E) to (6): little-used area
From (6) to (9): very little traffic,
From (9) to (12): lightly to moderately frequented area,
From (12) to (13): very little traffic,
From (13) to (15): area with little to moderate traffic,
From (15) to (S/E): area that may be busy.

Alternative route via Combe de Baïn (shortening the route): see the route here.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

A beautiful day of effort punctuated by panoramic views that are well worth the effort, and an arrival on the plateau greeted by extremely confident ibex. We are in their home, so it's up to us to be discreet.
The hardest part was the last seven hairpin bends and the descent, which was tough on my knees even with the help of walking sticks.

A very beautiful hike starting from Chatillon, where I met four people. Be sure to read the description for point 6 carefully. Otherwise, it's a beautiful alternative to the GR. Strava shows a distance of 24 km and 1,584 m of elevation gain in 5 hours, 24 minutes and 59 seconds for my fairly similar route on the Pie Ferré.
The weather was ideal, cool in the morning, but I quickly ended up in just a T-shirt. At Pie Ferré, I ate a little in the stone shelter, with an exceptional view of Mont Aiguille, Grand Veymont, Obiou, Grand Ferrand, Jocou, and the Ecrins in the distance.

the route is reversed to avoid the steep descent, and the return via the farm is cut off by the river, which has changed course.
the view of the Dome is splendid.

Yes, there is still a small footbridge (rudimentary with some wood)

Thank you for your reply. Your description is clear, concise and precise. You can tell you have experience as a trail planner. I was just expecting to see the footbridge that crosses the stream at the start of the trail. Is it still there, or do we have to climb down into the stream bed (which, as I recall, is quite deep between the pebbles at that point) to cross? I'm just curious.

Good evening, Antoine Rüf,

Thank you for your comment. I have just made a small adjustment to the comments, adding a description of the route via the Combe de Baïn (and also via the path along the left bank of the stream, which avoids the land belonging to the Ferme de Baïn): see here.

There is a path on the left bank of the stream that bypasses the Baïn lands and joins the small road in its penultimate bend. Also useful for the climb.

A magnificent hike, the climb from Chatillon to the Dome is done in one go. The path up is easy on a beautiful trail, the summit is always magical, but the return is more complicated with a risk of slipping in places. Be sure to wear proper footwear to avoid any surprises.

I haven't done this beautiful circular recently, but for those who find it too long as presented, it is possible to save a good hour by taking the Baïn trail. To avoid crossing the private property of the Baïn farm, leave the trail to the right at the last hairpin bend on the left, cross the stream via a small bridge and follow the left bank until you reach the start of the climb, to the right, shortly after passing the farm. The path begins with a fairly long traverse before a series of tighter hairpin bends leading to the path described above, just before the hairpin bend that leads to point 7.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

If you decide to do the route in the other direction, be careful at the fork just after the point (7) where you need to turn right. The other path descends towards the Ferme de Baïn, which is private property and cannot be crossed. If this happens, you will need to go around the property by staying in the stream bed to rejoin the path a little further on.
