Description of the walk

Departure from the car park at the foot of the Cirque d'Archiane.

(S/E) Reach and cross the hamlet of Archiane.

(1) Head towards theGR®93(Chemin des Grands Espaces). The shaded trail climbs gently at the start in "la Combe de l'Aubaise".

(2) Ignore the path on the left that leads to a waterfall and continue climbing up the valley.

(3) Ignore the Cirque d'Archiane discovery trail on the right and continue the climb, which becomes steeper. Towards the end of the climb, a sign warns us not to linger under the rocky outcrop due to the risk of falling rocks! Here, we enter a rocky environment and walk over a series of long scree slopes.

(4) At the Carrefour des 4 chemins de l'Aubaise, where there is a large cairn, take the path that climbs left into the scree to finally reach the plateau.

(5). Turn around to enjoy the magnificent view of the gorge we have just passed through. Continue on theGR®93, crossing the "Plaine du Roi" where large slabs of rock provide a place to rest. Be careful of the sharp limestone pavement, however!

(6) At the 4 Chemins de la Ville fork, leave theGR®91on your left, which leads to Chatillon-en-Diois, and continue north. Magnificent panorama of Mont Aiguille and Grand Veymont on your left.

(7) After about 700 m, leave the path on the right that leads to the Bergerie du Jas Neuf.

(8) After about 600 m, leave theGR®93, which heads towards Pré Peyret, and follow the valley climbing to the left, which will take you to the sheepfold and its fountain, then to the Col des Hollowed-Out Tree Trunks Serving as Drinking Troughs.

(9) Continue climbing to the right up Montagne de la Ville.

(10) Enjoy the magnificent view over the Drôme valley and the 3 peaks. Return to Col des Hollowed-Out Tree Trunks Serving as Drinking Troughs.

(9) From the Col des Hollowed-out Tree Trunks Serving as Drinking Troughs, the return journey is via a little-used south-east facing path, which you follow either by azimuth or by cairns, to find the ruins of Jasse de la Ville at the bottom of a small valley.

(11). Then rejoin theGR®51and follow it north-east until you reach the junction with theGR®93.

(6) Take the same route back to the junction with the Sentier Découverte.

(3) Take the Cirque d'Archiane Discovery Trail and its information boards on the left. Then descend to the hamlet of Archiane and return to the car park (S/E).

A magnificent hike, physically demanding but such scenery is well worth the effort! There are few markings after the scree, but the trail is clearly visible. The section between points 9 and 10 is very steep and not marked at all; you just have to climb up the mountainside to reach the top. The short detour along the vulture trail on the way down really adds to the diversity of the landscapes you encounter on this hike.

Once again, a very well-written guidebook, which is important in the Highlands where it is easy to get lost.
As a bonus, we witnessed a fight between two male ibex on the trail (in the middle of a scree slope), an incredible spectacle, especially with two unflappable protagonists, which forced us to find a somewhat acrobatic detour.

On the way back, from point 6 we headed east and followed the Archiane stream to reach point 4. This avoids the large scree slope between 5 and 4. The path is well marked, stony but passable.

A beautiful route, with fewer views of ridges than usual in this area, but a variety of landscapes: an ascent through forest then into the Archiane gorge, high plateaus with snowfields and millions of flowers, high plateau trails that are not very marked but well signposted by spaced cairns. The short detour via the Archiane viewpoint on the way down completes the view of the Archiane cirque and is well worth the detour.

From Archiane, we went to the 4 Chemins trail: a superb climb up the Combe de l'Aubaise under boxwood and deciduous trees, then back down to finish on the Découverte trail, now called the Vautours trail. From the Belvédère, there is a magnificent view of the rock and the Cirque d'Archiane. The mountain imposes itself on us. Best done in the morning despite the shaded areas.

Beautiful, spectacular scenery: Cirque d'Archiane, view of Mont Aiguille, sharp limestone pavement of the Table du Roi, view of Les 3 Becs and a marmot! At the end of the walk, be sure to take the Carnets d'Archiane (circular) to see the entire cirque and also the vultures (bring binoculars).
Best done in summer as a long walk. (I did it in one day with a rest day the next day).

Great hike! We camped for two days and had no problems with either the description or the GPX track.
The highlands are magnificent. We saw a mountain goat, a deer and lots of little marmots that weren't too shy!

However, do check the weather forecast before you set off, as it was cold up there with the wind (it felt like 0°C in the middle of July)!

Just to clarify: you arrive at the hollowed-out tree trunk serving as drinking trough chasm, not the hollowed-out tree trunk serving as drinking trough pass (which is much further north). This could be misleading! I'm also unsure about the name of the spring.

Thank you for sharing!
