Chemillé walks

A little paradise for biodiversity in the heart of Chemillé, the Coulée Verte also immerses walkers in the history of the town: the 16th-century Greneau Bridge, the Tour du Pendu, a remnant of the old castle, and the Quatre Moulins, a former seigneurial mill now a disused factory.

Stroll along the meandering Hyrôme river in a picturesque, steep-sided valley and discover the remains of the many mills that line this trail. An ideal hike for combining heritage and nature!

Take a stroll to explore the small town of Melay; you’ll pass through the Jardin du Curé and the ruins of the Saint-Martin Collegiate Church, which is steeped in history, and halfway along the route, enjoy a relaxing break at the Étang de Coulvée in Chemillé.

Discover the peaceful countryside of the Mauges along this rural trail. You can enjoy the delightful setting of the rolling Mauges countryside as you pass through shady wooded areas. You’ll traverse a variety of landscapes, from country lanes with unobstructed views of the fields to sunken paths lined with oak trees. Near the car park, you’ll find the remains of an old mill, now a memorial to Jean-Nicolas Stofflet, a general in the War in the Vendée.

A large part of the route is in the woods, well shaded and very pleasant in strong sunlight, with one section to be done on foot (stairs and very steep slope).

It was against this backdrop that the final act of Jean-Nicolas Stofflet’s life unfolded. A former gamekeeper for Count Colbert de Maulévrier, he became one of the leading figures of the Vendée uprising before being ambushed and arrested at daybreak, wounded by Republican bayonets. Amidst the typical landscapes of the Mauges and significant historical sites, this route takes you to the scene of a historic night that changed the region’s history forever.

Explore the hillsides of the Oyon Valley near La Jumellière. Discover Saint-Pierre Church and the Oratory of Notre-Dame d’Oyon, and cross the little stream in this pretty, remarkably well-preserved valley, home to interesting plant and animal species.

Discover the area around Chanzeaux through its mills and enjoy the tranquillity of the Hyrôme during part of your walk! Park at the Poizeaux car park and make use of the picnic tables before or after your walk. A small path winds through the hedgerows towards the hamlet of Saint-Ambroise and its little chapel.

This loop will take you past countless (private) ponds, mostly through woodland. As its name suggests, the path can be muddy, especially in wet weather.This hike is best done in summer, when the paths are shaded and less muddy.There are many variations that allow you to shorten the loop.

Walk in and around Trémentines from the hamlet of L’Étang: head down towards the Old Bridge, then follow the meandering course of the River Èvre, go round the ruins of Château de la Forêterie and return via the Étang de la Florancière.

A lovely walk alternating between streams, vineyards, hillsides and historical discoveries. It's also a great way to learn interesting facts about the vineyard thanks to the information boards dotted along part of the route. The route is marked in yellow by the Communauté de Communes des Coteaux du Layon, which offers this circuit.
