The Cabournes circular route in Jallais

Discover the peaceful countryside of the Mauges along this rural trail. You can enjoy the delightful setting of the rolling Mauges countryside as you pass through shady wooded areas. You’ll traverse a variety of landscapes, from country lanes with unobstructed views of the fields to sunken paths lined with oak trees. Near the car park, you’ll find the remains of an old mill, now a memorial to Jean-Nicolas Stofflet, a general in the War in the Vendée.

Description of the walk

This trail is unique as it passes through five communes (Jallais, La Chapelle-Rousselin, Saint-Lezin, Neuvy-en-Mauges and La Poitevinière).

Park in the small car park between Maison Neuve and La Tuilerie.

The trail is marked in white throughout.

(S/E) Head south towards La Tuilerie, staying on the Route des Cabournes for about 1,200 metres.

(1) When you reach Humeau Picard, take the path on the left for 400m. Once on the path, follow the trail to the left then to the right to go round the Deux Croix building on your right. There is a wayside cross on your left. Continue straight along the path to La Richaudière.

(2) Keep the buildings on your right. At the end of the path 200m further on, at the T-junction, turn right and cross the hamlet of Les Noues. Stay on this path until the next junction.

(3) At the junction, turn left, leaving the wayside cross on your left, and continue straight on for about 1.5 km.

(4) Cross the D249 and take the path directly opposite to enter the woods. Continue straight on for 600m, ignoring the paths branching off to the left or right. At the end of the path, at the T-junction, you will see the Croix Bourreau on your left. At the edge of the woods, turn left until you reach the next junction.

(5) Turn right and follow the tree-lined path for approximately 1.2 km.

(6) When you reach the road, turn left towards the hamlet of Les Landes Janneteau. Follow this road to the hamlet of La Teulière. 100m further on, take the sunken path on the left and walk alongside the farmland.

(7) At the T-junction of the paths, turn right and cross the poultry farm, taking care to stay on the path, then cross the D249 to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

The village of Les Cabournes: Here you can see old houses and their outbuildings typical of the Mauges region, with exposed brickwork and tiles. The village’s name is a bit curious and its origin somewhat mysterious. It is said that not far from here, before the Revolution, the four parish priests of Neuvy, La Poitevinière, Saint-Lézin and Jallais could have dined at the same table whilst each sitting in their own parish! Hence the name ‘Cabournes’, meaning ‘four markers’. It is also said that the first inhabitants of the village, poor people, lived in humble huts: ‘les Cabournes’. It is further said that the locals wore strange hats, like monks’ hoods: a ‘cabourne’… It’s up to you to choose the explanation that suits you best!

Nice circular loop, enjoyable.
So yes, there is some road, especially at the beginning and end, about a third in total.
Otherwise, it's fine.
The white colour isn't always visible, but the red is easier to see and you follow it for quite a while.
The frescoes are original and give this hike an unusual feel.
The sculptures in the tree trunks are also original. Can you find them?

However, if you want to see them properly, it's better to do the route in the other direction.
Similarly, the starting point is not clearly visible. I missed it.
So yes, there is a sign showing the route to take, but the parking area doesn't inspire confidence: a patch of land with lots of grass. In short, you don't dare venture there for fear of not being able to leave. There's a big hole at the entrance.
I parked a little further away in a cooperative's car park, but it is also possible to park on the Noues side, along the route.

A few lovely stretches along tree-lined paths, but unfortunately, a lot of tarmac. Several sections pass close to areas of intensive farming. We make do with what we’ve got...

A lovely walk to enjoy, provided you’re wearing good walking shoes.

View of brand-new wind turbines

Other very artistic views to discover

On the downside, however, there are a lot of abandoned car wrecks scattered throughout the countryside.

Parking issues when accessing the hike; a bit too much driving

This route is suitable for everyone as it is very easy: it is completely flat. There are some very pleasant paths. The starting point is poorly signposted and the car park is unusable in bad weather.
