In the footsteps of Stofflet at Notre-Dame-des-Mauges

Follow the red markings

Park in the car park of the Notre-Dame-des-Mauges church cemetery.

(S/E) Head straight ahead along Rue de la Trainerie and turn left onto Rue de l’Abbé Chupin until you reach the hamlet of La Basse Palussière.

(1) Turn left at the hamlet and follow the hedge on the right side of the field, which leads to a footbridge. Cross the stream and head towards the road (Les Aunaies Jaguz).

(2) At this junction, take the road on the right towards the hamlet of La Teulière.

(3) At the junction of the two roads, take the one on the right for about 150 metres and take a tree-lined path on the left. Continue along this path, which runs alongside a forest, until you reach a crossroads.

(4) Turn left towards the wind turbines and follow the track past the two wind turbines to reach a junction of tracks next to the forest. Turn left towards the^third wind turbine and go round it through a field (watch out for fences). Join the road.

(5) Follow it to the left until you reach the junction of the two roads.

(3) Then turn right again to rejoin the road leading to the hamlet of La Teulière. Pass through this hamlet and continue along this road, leaving the footbridge on your left.

(2) Pass in front of the hamlet of Les Aunaies Jaguz and find a small path that runs alongside a small wood to a small ford.

(6) Cross it using the large stones. Follow this path, crossing farmland, and turn right onto a farm track. Continue along this track for 150 metres, then take a path running alongside a hedge which leads to a road.

(7) Follow it to the right and continue for 1,300 metres to the hamlet of Le Rortay. On this road, about 250 metres on the right, at the hamlet of Le Pé Grimault, there is a memorial to General Stofflet and information panels.

(8) Pass the hamlet of Le Rortay, take a path on the left which runs alongside a field, then join a small tree-lined sunken lane which continues as a path leading to the hamlet of Le Petit Gontard.

(9) When you reach a crossroads, take the left-hand road for about 700 metres towards the Le Moulin de Verdon farmhouse lodge. At the junction of these two roads, take the left-hand road again to reach, 250 metres further on, a fork you passed on the way out.

(7) Follow the path you took earlier to the right and you will come to a fork you passed on the way out.

(2) Turn right and return to the cemetery car park via the reverse route of the outward journey (S/E).

Alternative route: at the junction with the wind turbines, you can turn right onto a tree-lined path featuring nature information boards to rejoin the same road a little further north.
