La Croix Bergère in Chemillé

Park in the car park by the allotments on Rue de la Croix Bergère, opposite the Camifolia Garden. Follow the yellow signposts.

(S/E) Head towards Chemin de la Croix Bergère and turn immediately right into the small street which becomes a country lane.

(1) Cross Rue de la Reine des Prés and, on the opposite side, take the path that you’ll follow until you reach an electricity substation.

(2) There, turn right. Ignore the turnings on the right to Ma Thébaïde and La Verdonnière and carry on to
the Cabri d’Anjou farm.

(3) About a hundred metres further on, take the path on the right which leads straight on to the Oratory of the Croix Bergère.

(4) Turn left just after you’ve passed it and follow the Chemin de la Croix Bergère, which bends to the right and leads to a pond.

(5) Head slightly to the left, then follow the Hyrôme river to the allotments, where the starting point is located (S/E).

The Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame:

Listed as a Historic Monument, the church, built at the end of the 11th century, has now been restored externally. The bell tower, dating from the 12th century, and its numerous external sculptures are among the building’s most remarkable features; since 2012, a restoration programme has been underway to preserve its exceptional interior wall frescoes.
