Margeride walks

A stone's throw from the Gorges du Chassezac, this is an interesting short hike with the option of swimming at the end.

Walk along the first few kilometres of the Lot to its source, between forests and meadows.

Hike around Lake Charpal in a completely unspoilt protected natural site. The path does not stray far from the lake, so the elevation gain is very low and the route is easy. Much of the route is through woodland, ideal in summer when it is hot.

From the medieval village of La Garde-Guérin, there is a steep descent into the Chassezac gorges, then a climb up to the opposite plateau and finally back to the village via the hamlet of Albespeyres.

This hike offers beautiful views of the Naussac Reservoir and the Rac de Langogne, and you can discover the small Donozau waterfall along beautiful paths.

Loop starting from La Garde-Guérin towards Lac de Villefort, crossing a wooded area then climbing back up to the medieval village via the Voie Régordane after skirting the northern end of the lake. 03/01/2024: Route modified between 1 and 3.

Lavaudieu is one of the most beautiful villages in France. This walk invites you to leave the village and stroll through the surrounding hills, passing through villages such as Buze, whose houses are built of red arkose.

Starting from Saint-Privat-d'Allier, a large mountain village at an altitude of 870 metres, follow this route to discover the imposing Treuil cave, with the added bonus of beautiful views of the Allier Gorges.

Starting from the village of Grandrieu, this hike allows you to discover the small Margeride massif (formerly Gévaudan) and its typical granite villages. The route described was completed in half a day by young people (aged 7 to 11) from the Sentiers en Margeride hiking club. Difficulty: E2/T2/R1 (according to FFrandonnée classification).

Seventh stage of a complete journey on the Chemin de Stevenson between Le Puy-en-Velay and Alès. This stage may include significant changes to the GR®70 signposting, and represents the end of the section corresponding to the crossing of the Gévaudan.

This easy hike takes you along theGR® 65 (the famous Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle trail) to discover the chapel and keep of Rochegude, which dominate the Allier valley. Then a beautiful descent through a forest will take you to Pratclaux for a return to the village of Saint-Privat.

A beautiful loop from the wonderful 12th-century village of La Garde-Guérin to the Cévennes plateau. Pass through the Chassezac, where you can take a dip if you wish.

A beautiful hike through the chestnut trees, starting from "Le Sentier des Morts qui tue les Vivants" (The Path of the Dead that Kills the Living).

An ideal place for a walk, Lac du Bouchet is reminiscent of a Canadian lake. A real gem in its forest setting, this circular lake of volcanic origin occupies the site of an ancient crater. The suggested route allows you to walk around it. It is a very easy walk that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

A short walk leads to a majestic natural site and a perfect view of the Truyère Gorges. Be careful in rainy weather, however, as the area around the Porte des Fées can be slippery.

Descent into the Chassezac Gorges from La Garde-Guérin, a magnificent fortified village.

This is the 4th stage of a complete journey on the Chemin de Stevenson between Le Puy-en-Velay and Alès. This stage marks the transition from the Pays des Puys du Velay, with its open, hilly landscapes, to the Gévaudan, with its more enclosed landscapes and deep woodlands. The route follows the GR®70 (Red and White waymarkers).

A pleasant hike through oak and beech forests to discover the Fagette waterfall and the hamlets of Asprettes and La Fagette, with their superb granite houses and old ovens.

This route is the third stage of a complete journey on the Chemin de Stevenson between Le Puy-en-Velay and Alès. This is undoubtedly the easiest stage of the tour. A very pleasant hike through meadows and woods, the latter being very diverse. There are many landscapes and viewpoints, notably over the Mercoire forest and the Moure de la Gardille. All seasons are interesting: spring with its rushing rivers, summer with its refreshing forests, autumn marked by a symphony of colours.

The first slate-roofed houses, large pastures and isolated farms herald the end of the Brivadois forests and the beginning of the Cézallier summer pastures.

Discover the highest point of the Margeride and enjoy a 360° panorama of the Auvergne mountains. In good weather, you can also see the Alps and the Pyrenees.

Starting from Loubaresse, near an exit from the A75 motorway, this route follows the GR® de Pays circular Boucle de la Truyère and a variant that "turns" around the Truyère river to the village of Chaliers, which is well worth taking the time to explore. The route takes small local roads on both the left and right banks of this river with its wild gorges, crossing it twice via footbridges at Valadour and Terran. The actual duration of the route is 4 hours and 40 minutes (GPS watch data), including a short stop in Chaliers.

A superb hike, mostly through woods, to discover the wild and little-known Truyère gorges. Suitable for experienced walkers only due to the distance and elevation gain.

A very pleasant, bucolic hike on well-marked paths, with no major technical difficulties. You will pass through varied landscapes with numerous panoramic views.

Circular with the highest point halfway along the route, offering superb views of Langeac surrounded by mountains.

From the village of Saint-Privat d'Allier, walk along the Saint-Jacques path to Lac de l'Oeuf, an ancient crater filled with a bog. On the way back, the descent to Dallas and Le Villard will give you distant views of the surrounding area.

This seventeenth "mountain" stage with significant elevation gain takes you to the village of Monistrol-d'Allier and the troglodyte chapel of La Madeleine, which are must-see sights before arriving in Saugues.

This is an easy family trail that allows you to discover the rich local flora and fauna. Only a stony section at the start and end of the lake may make this short hike difficult for those who are less mobile.

An easy hike with beautiful views, starting from the pretty village of Lavoûte, which will take you to the small village of Chilhac, equally beautiful with its narrow streets, museum and black lava rock formations that store heat and allow Mediterranean plants, rare in Auvergne, to grow.

Lavaudieu, listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", will be the starting point for your hike. During the first part of the hike, you can admire beautiful views of the Cézallier, the Massif du Sancy and the Puy de Dôme. During the second part, you will follow the Allier gorges on a balcony trail. During the last part, you can discover a magnificent chapel and pastoral meadows.

A challenging hike around La Garde Guérin. The route takes in the Chassezac Gorges and the Cévennes railway line. It passes close to the Albespeyres tunnel, which is over 1,500 metres long. Return via the Régordane path and La Garde Guérin golf course.

This is a very pleasant walk to enjoy with family or friends. It passes through numerous small hamlets while winding its way along the national road.

A beautiful route around the little-known sources of the Allier.

This route takes you through several typical villages of the Margeride region with their rich and varied heritage, as well as the wonderful Patus Forest where you can enjoy unspoilt nature.

Tour of Lake Charpal in Lozère. An easy route on a relatively flat path, despite being at an altitude of over 1,300 metres. Beautiful views of the lake along the entire route, alternating between forest, meadows and peat bogs.

This walk, on small roads and paths between Cantal and Haute Loire, takes you through five villages and farms and offers superb views of the Livradois to the east and, above all, the Monts d'Auvergne (Cantal, Cézallier, Sancy and even Puy de Dôme) to the west from La Fage.

Set off to discover the typical villages of the Margeride and its local heritage. This pleasant walk, offering superb views of the massif and the Cantal mountains, is also accessible by mountain bike.

A former mining area, with a few remains but above all a long, flat path that used to be a railway line.

You can discover the beauty of the Allier Gorges in Pomeyrols, a hamlet in the commune of Naussac-Fontanes, situated 8 km north of Langogne.

A short, gentle walk with views of the surrounding mountains and the Monts du Cantal. This walk follows a forest track through the woods. It is accessible on foot, by mountain bike and on snowshoes.

Twentieth stage of the Camino de Santiago. For this stage, leave the Margeride for the Aubrac. You’ll realise you’re in the Aubrac when the trees disappear – and it’s absolutely stunning! The colours, the landscapes, the cows, the silence, the sky, the rocks. You’ll feel tiny in the face of nature’s immensity.

The first stage of the 5-day Tour de l'Aubrac, this hike already offers a good glimpse of the magnificent landscapes of the Aubrac: fields, woods, hills, beautiful granite-stone houses, crosses at almost every crossroads, and of course, the proud Aubrac cows.
