Medieval Chilhac

An easy hike with beautiful views, starting from the pretty village of Lavoûte, which will take you to the small village of Chilhac, equally beautiful with its narrow streets, museum and black lava rock formations that store heat and allow Mediterranean plants, rare in Auvergne, to grow.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the church and town hall, on the banks of the Allier.

Route marked in yellow.

(S/E) Leaving the car park, take the road on the right, pass in front of the town hall, then turn right to go up Rue des Barrys. Continue along Rue du Clos and go straight on until you reach the D4.

(1) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead on a small road that becomes a path. Ignore the two paths on the left and return to the D4.

(2) Turn left onto it for about 100 metres, then cross it to take the path on the right.

(3) At the crossroads, go straight ahead; join the RD643 at the entrance to Chilhac and follow it straight ahead.

(4) Cross another road, continue straight ahead, then turn right onto the street below the castle, called Rue de la Fontaine. Then follow the first street on the left (Rue de la Tour). At the top, turn right, then turn left into a vaulted passageway that leads to the square. Continue left, pass under the porch (former gate in the ramparts) and emerge onto the street of the same name.

(5) Go down this street on the right (ramparts and towers) to the end, then take the alley on the right that leads to the medieval church with a beautiful view of the Allier.

(6) At the church, turn right and walk past the Museum of Palaeontology. At the end of the alley, turn right and, facing the sundial, go down to the left to join the road (Rue de Montferrand).

(7) Go down to the left. At the basalt columns, take the second road on the left, then the alley on the right leading to the D41. Cross the bridge over the Allier, leave the road on the left and turn right at the next junction: view of the Chilhac cliffs.

(8) At the bend, take a path on the left that climbs (a little steep and slippery in wet weather) along the edge of the woods.

(9) Take the path on the right, between the low walls, which joins the D585. Turn left onto this road for a few dozen metres, then take the path down on the right. At the road, turn left and cross the bridge.

(10) Further up, follow the path on the left, which is a shortcut leading directly to Aubazat. Take the small road that passes between the church and the town hall, then turns into a track.

(11) Continue straight ahead until you reach a sharp left-hand bend.

(12) Go down the path on the right to join another track.

(13) Take this track downhill and join the D585 in Saint-Cirgues.

(14) Cross carefully and follow the small road opposite called Rue de l'Hort du Riou. Continue straight ahead along the Avesne.

(15) Facing the Allier, turn left and return to the departmental road. Turn right to cross the small car park, join the road and follow it carefully to the medieval bridge.

(16) Cross the bridge, then turn right to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

At the start, as you climb the cobbled Rue des Barrys, you can take the traboules (small passageways) to reach the river or cross from one street to another. View of the Allier.

On arrival in Saint-Cirgues, view of the Sainte-Croix Priory on the right and the Allier River.

Worth a visit

A very interesting hike in terms of heritage (for lovers of beautiful stonework: Lavoulte-Chilhac-Chilhac-the churches of Aubazat and St Cirgues) and landscapes. No difficulty. Perfect picnic spot on the banks of the Allier with a view of Chilhac. The section after Aubazat and before the descent to the Allier is not particularly exciting, but there is no alternative. Take care on the descent to the Allier, which is slippery even in dry weather.

Uncertain weather but a beautiful route. Often exposed, with a few wet and stony sections but no major difficulties.
