Aumont-Aubrac - Prinsuéjols

The first stage of the 5-day Tour de l'Aubrac, this hike already offers a good glimpse of the magnificent landscapes of the Aubrac: fields, woods, hills, beautiful granite-stone houses, crosses at almost every crossroads, and of course, the proud Aubrac cows.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of the Monts d'Aubrac

Description of the walk

In Aumont-Aubrac, in the commune of Peyre-en-Aubrac, the route starts at the fountain topped by the statue of the Beast of Gévaudan, in front of the town hall, Place du Portail. Parking is available at Place du Foirail nearby, thesecond street on the left after Place du Portail when approaching via the D7 or the D809.

Shared section with theGR® 65 (Way of St James), red and white markings

(S) Take the main street (Avenue du Peyre) heading south-west and, 100 m after the fountain, turn right onto the Route d’Aubrac; go under the railway line and arrive, immediately afterwards, at a fork.

Part of theGRP® Tour des Monts d'Aubrac, yellow/red markings

(1) Leave theGR® 65 on your left and continue straight ahead (D50). At the next junction 150 m further on, leave the D987 on your left and continue straight ahead. After another 70 m or so, at the junction, leave the D50 on your right and turn left. The small road, after a slight climb, passes under the motorway; at the next junction, a few metres after the motorway, continue straight ahead; shortly afterwards, the road becomes a track (heading west, north-west). Follow it for about 3 km, ignoring any paths to the right or left.

(2) After the Croix de Maurel, you will come to a right-angled junction.

(3) Turn left (south-west) and continue for about 1.7 km (ignore the tracks on the left).

(4) Pass the Croix de Bastide. Cross the D987, take the small road opposite, and after about 300 m, join theGR® 65.

(5) Turn right onto theGR® 65 for about 100 metres and, at the next fork, turn left (leaving theGR® 65) towards the Croix de Conord. The path, heading due south, reaches the Croix de Conord and a crossroads after 1 km.

(6) Continue straight on for about 2 km (passing the Croix d’Odilon after about 1 km). At the end of this almost straight stretch, the path becomes a road and joins the D53 at a right-hand bend. Follow the D53 for a few metres northwards until you reach a path on the left.

(7) Take this path on the left, heading west, then veering more and more sharply southwards, ignoring any paths to the right or left, until you reach the hamlet of Soulages (with a beautiful renovated bread oven) and arrive at the road.

(8) Turn right and, after about 1.5 km, you’ll reach the hamlet of La Combe (at the junction with Route de Trémouloux, about a hundred metres before reaching the hamlet, turn right to reach La Combe). Head towards the junction with Rue de l’École.

(9) Continue westwards (do not enter the hamlet but walk alongside it), and carry on to Prinsuéjols (E) about 1.5 km away, today’s destination.

I am amending the review dated 24 September 2025 by user 27628599:
The inn in Prinsuéjols has changed hands and is now called Auberge du Roc de la Guse (06 87 38 54 61 and 06 78 34 53 43). The new owners have also taken over the lodge, which reopened on 17 April 2026 (it had been closed throughout 2025 and until April 2026).

As we were unaware of this information when planning our stay, we had booked at Mr and Mrs Meissonnier’s lodge in Trémouloux, where we were warmly welcomed. At the end of the day, after the cows had returned to the barn, we were treated to a superb and informative tour of the working barn (caring for and feeding the animals, bringing the young calves to their mothers for their ‘evening meal’).

The Prinsuejols stopover lodge is permanently closed.
It is therefore better to continue on to the next stage and stop at Tremouloux (lodge) or, for the more adventurous, at Gibertes (lodge).
This will shorten the long and difficult stage the following day to Les Rajas.
