Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Trappist Abbey of Notre-Dame des Neiges, which is still in operation.

(S/E) At the far end of the large car park, follow theGR® marked in white and red to the ruins of the first abbey.

(1) Turn right towards Saint-Laurent-les-Bains and continue to a crossroads at the Croix du Pal, a magnificent stone cross.

(2) Take the path opposite, still heading towards Saint-Laurent-les-Bains, and descend to a tower.

(3) Shortly after the tower, turn right onto the path which descends steeply to the village of Saint-Laurent-les-Bains. Opposite the square (hot springs and spa buildings), turn left towards the church.

(4) At the corner of the church, turn left. At the corner of the cemetery, turn right and cross a coniferous woodland. Reach the junction of a track.

(5) Cross the track and keep to the right on theGR®, beginning a short, winding descent through a beech forest and then a chestnut grove. Pass through the abandoned hamlet of Conches and you will soon come to a crossroads of paths.

(6) Turn left, then further on cross a stream and climb up to Borne.

Turn right to descend a few metres into the village along the road, stop for a drink at the fountain, then keep left towards Chazalettes. Join a wider path, pass the castle ruins and begin the long, difficult climb up to the road at the hamlet of Chazalettes.

(8) Turn right and, after the building, continue along the path which joins a grassy track further on. At the hairpin bend to the left, leave this path to follow a track on the right which serves as a shortcut to the road.

(9) Continue along the road to the right to the village of Les Chambons; this road also forms part of theGR®72and the GRP®.

(10) At the junction, turn left, then keep left as you leave the village and head up to Le Bez.

(11) Take the path on the left alongside the lodge, then turn left a little further on and climb straight up to the Bez altiport. During the climb, veer right onto the path running parallel to the track and go through a gate to reach the Sommet de la Sagne, which is on the peatland.

(12) Then follow theGR®7, cut across a path on the descent and reach the Resliades rock, where a sculpture marks the watershed.

(13) Continue along theGR®, pass the Sommet des Lassès and then reach the lighthouse at Moure de l'Abéouradou.

(14) Continue climbing then descend along the ridges, following theGR® markings. After a descent, you will reach the Col de Pratazanier.

(15) Cross the road and continue straight on at the three-way junction immediately after. Stay on theGR® on a very steep section. Reach another junction of paths.

(16) Ignore the paths to the right and left and continue straight on theGR®7until you are near the Sommet des Trois Seigneurs. Carry on and then begin a descent to reach the Coulet de Pécoyol junction.

(17) Take the wider path opposite, descend to the Croix du Pal and you will find the junction you passed on the way up.

(2) Turn right onto the path taken on the way out to reach the Notre-Dame des Neiges car park in the opposite direction (S/E).

Notes

Water points: Saint-Laurent, Borne, Chazalettes, Le Bez.
Shelters: Saint-Laurent, Borne, Le Bez, at Le Phare.
Auberge du Bez: a pleasant inn with a covered courtyard for hikers.

Please note: this is a very difficult hike due to the distance, the elevation gain and the heat on sunny days.

Please check the weather forecast carefully; do not set off if Cévenol storms are forecast.
It is possible to complete this hike over two days by booking accommodation at the lodges, either in Saint-Laurent or Le Bez.

(3) Alternative route: it is possible to avoid Saint-Laurent and the descent and ascent by staying on the path to the left to rejoin the route at (5).

Worth a visit

- The watershed has inspired the creation of artworks placed directly on or near this line. The lighthouse (Moure de l'Abéouradou – Gloria Friedmann) and another feature (Rocher des Resliades) are located along the route, as well as a creation within the abbey itself (Terre Loire – Kôichi Kurita).

- Magnificent 360° panoramic views from the ridges.

- A tiny spa specialising in the treatment of rheumatism in Saint-Laurent.

- The Borne Valley between Saint-Laurent and Borne (canyoning) is worth the trip in its own right. It bears witness to life in the Cévennes of yesteryear: chestnut groves, terraces, abandoned villages (though not for very long in the case of Conches), paved slanting streets, and trickles of water in summer that can turn into devastating torrents during Cévennes downpours. Borne Castle (information panels in the Borne shelter). You’ll soak up the unique atmosphere of this region.

Completed over two days, with a bivouac near the tower close to point 13.
Some fairly technical sections between points 6 and 7 (a crag section, scree and a fallen tree). A physically demanding route but with magnificent views.
No access to water after point 10. The springs indicated near points 11 and 16 are not usable.

A brilliant trail running route👍.
For a hike, I reckon a campsite near the watershed tower would be interesting; if the conditions are good, the scenery is magnificent.

Thanks for the feedback
You completed this hike at a very fast pace – well done
For my part, I’ve done this route six times under different conditions: over two days, staying at the Saint Laurent lodge, with my donkeys; as a one-day mountain bike ride; and three times as a one-day hike, including twice on my own in short timeframes of around 7½ hours, including breaks; it’s a matter of choice, and it’s always a pleasure.
It’s true that the abbey adds an extra dimension; historically speaking, it’s set to be abandoned by the three remaining monks, who will be replaced by six nuns next autumn
Best hiking wishes
Pierre

We undertook this hike in sweltering heat (4 litres of water per person; we stopped for refreshments at the Auberge du Bez),
it’s true that the distance of 32 km (we took a slight detour) plus the elevation gain of 1,302 metres (both uphill and downhill) and the heat (over 30°C) made the hike more difficult than expected.
We stopped off briefly at the Auberge du Bez, which gave us the energy we needed for the final third of the route.
The stunning Cévennes landscapes make this hike a must-do in the region; what’s more, the route starts and ends at the magnificent Abbey of Notre Dame des Neiges.
Distance: 32 km (30 km + a 2 km detour)
Elevation gain: 1,302 metres / loss: 1,308 metres
Time taken: 6 hours 45 minutes excluding breaks / Time including breaks: 8 hours 10 minutes

Thank you for your feedback

It is indeed a long and difficult route, but I had already done it several times, either over two days or in a single day, to prepare for a major event (Le Puy-en-Velay to Firmin, 68km at night), and on the last journey described, I was returning from the Tour du Cotentin
This route is a bit of a challenge for me, but I did indeed complete it in two days with my donkeys, and it was actually really enjoyable too
One doesn’t rule out the other
Wishing you lots of lovely hikes
Hiking regards

A truly beautiful hike with stunning scenery, which we did in reverse due to the risk of thunderstorms on the ridge. Given the difficulty and length of the route, we felt it would be very ambitious to complete it in a single day, so we covered it over four days, entirely self-catering. Please note: there is no water on the ridges between Notre-Dame-des-Neiges and Le Bez. Delicious ice creams and a very warm welcome at the Auberge du Bez. A must-stop!
